Trip of a lifetime. Here are some recs for Thailand (more deets when I land in the US).
1. Shop at Chatuchak weekend market (this is where I got my fit in pic 1). Sections 2-4 have the best clothes. Super trendy and vintage. Dedicate 4 hours here at least! Market also has souvenirs and foot massages for cheap if you get tired!
2. Shop for clothes at platinum mall. Thailands biggest wholesale mall! Amazing option for clothes.
3. Dine at North Restaurant- Michelin star for the price of $30 USDs!
4. Terminal 21, they have an amazing food court on level 5!
5. If you’re at the airport, they have an amazing food court on the 1st level called magic court near gate 8!
6. DJ station is so vibeyyy. It’s a nightclub w 10 different rooms. Music is catchy and they even have a k pop room where ppl are dancing to the main bops (slide 6). Head to GOD afterward if you’re looking for a GAY party
7. Aduthaya to see the temples
8. Silom 10 market for the best Tom yum I’ve ever had!
9. Get mango sticky rice!
10. “ After you” dessert cafe. They have the best desserts I’ve ever tasted. Try their Thai shaved ice
11. Visit grand palace and Wat Phra in one day to see the reclining Buddha taken in Thailand by @probablyrobb

Dr. Rob Duc Nguyen, MD

From the hood to physcianHOOD. From fighting in the Vietnam war to being imprisoned in “re-education” camps, I am in awe at how far we have come.

4 years ago, I took a leap of faith and left the comfort of Southern California to attend a school I barely knew in Seattle, WA. Today, I am eternally grateful for the incredible journey the University of Washington has given me. Though this year has been full of the unexpected, i remind myself how fortunate and privileged I am to be able to care for patients for the rest of my life. I truly cannot imagine doing anything else in this lifetime.

To my friends and family, we did this!

Last month, I got news I never wanted to hear. After having the immense privilege of interviewing at 10 programs, I found out that I did not match into ophthalmology. I spent 9 years dedicating my life to this moment, and in the span of 1 day, in the form of 1 sentence, I found out that I could not become a physician in my chosen speciality. I was heartbroken, shaken to my core, the ground beneath me uprooted. The magnitude of the pain I felt would make an earthquake jealous.

But I’ve been here before. If growing up in the hood has taught me anything, it’s knowing how to get back up when life tries to trifle and play weird games. Though these past few weeks have been some of the most difficult weeks of my life, I am so grateful for everyone who has supported me and reminded me that my self-worth is more than the results of a computer generated algorithm sitting on some dude’s desk.

When i found out that I did not match, I weighed all my options, including taking a research year vs submitting my rank list for internal medicine. It was an incredibly hard decision and I am happy to announce that I have accepted a post-doctorate position at the UCSF Proctor Institute, where I will be doing research into preventing avoidable vision loss in underserved communities. If anyone has friends in SF looking for a roommate, slide in the DMs.I hope that in 20 years, I can look back at this moment not as a setback, but as a blessing in disguise that gave me the opportunity to pursue eye research at a university i’ve respected for so long. I know I will be proud of myself for not giving up on my dreams of becoming an eye surgeon who preserves sight in our most underserved communities. Going unmatched in medicine can bring uncertainty, but at this moment, I have clarity like never before. I know that I must lean on my resilience and trust my story, especially amid a system that rewards pedigree and privilege over hard work and humble roots. My mom scrubbed feet at a nail salon from 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week, so that I could one day scrub into a surgical gown. Because of her, I am here. Ophtho 2024 I’m coming for you, this time bigger, badder and better. <3 taken in University of Washington by @probablyrobb
