michellewilliams thanks for this message. I was joking with my therapist and shared I’m hitting turnaround jumpers at the buzzer to win the game and I’ve been doing that my whole life. Just because I’m resilient doesn’t mean I should always be forced to use that muscle. Just because I’m solid in crunch time doesn’t mean I have to put out fires I didn’t create. I don’t often share my story, but here’s a snippet. For the past several YEARS, I have been in a situation where a business has repeatedly failed in its responsibility to deliver basic human rights in the workplace. It has also failed to appropriately investigate harassment, and has attempted to scapegoat me instead of acting on the very real allegations present in their workplace. The way they have handled the situation exacerbates my negative health outcomes, and they repeatedly deny and attempt to rewrite past history. For example, I have settled with the corporation’s insurance provider for long term disability, but am being denied short term disability (and long term disability) by the same corporation, and they continue to escalate their claims against me. It’s appalling and very little has been done by the systems that are supposed to oversee these corporations. I’m sharing this because I’m tired of systemic injustice. @wabber @uzomachioma @wcbmanitoba please, can you do better? I believe in the @ndpmanitoba as a party for the people. One of my favourite tv shows back in the day was Heroes. Several of its central characters were “completely average” working folks until they figured out what their superpowers were and actively used them to benefit others. A repeated motif is, “Save the cheerleader, save the world,” and while the ties to that theme can get a fair bit convoluted, the theme of individual power and responsibility directly impacting the collective is strong. Only by changing the status quo can we change the world. The most important aspect is that they’re not blaming the cheerleader for the reality in which the world explodes, but instead are changing the circumstances around the cheerleader that are actually responsible for its explosion. What parallels am I drawing? We have individual power to come together to change the systems that benefit the few at the expense of the many. Instead of blaming the individual for being unable to change the system alone, coordinated, collective action is needed. Don’t blame sane people for reacting sanely to insane situations.
