Back in grad school I took pride in squeezing in 40-60 hours of studio time outside of classes. GONE ARE THOSE DAYS. This took (only?) 38 hours and 19 minutes but slowly, painfully spread across a whole month, with one last stretch of staying up till 4am 😑. Mothering, homeschooling, and being the CEO of domestic affairs has taken priority but grateful to have painted with oil again and so glad that I finally got to make this particular work.

A long time ago I left India to come and study, and then live, in the U.S. I used to say then that the studio was my country. While spending the last few months in transit, soaking up grace and hospitality, a fast paced summer, and moments before our family starts a new chapter, a new first, a place to really call home, I discovered that anywhere I paint, even a corner of a very charitable friend’s worktable, even for an hour at a time, while I obsessively listen to an audiobook, is… truly, and delightfully, home. IYKYK the story behind this painting. But sudden changes in our circumstances made it quite impossible to paint with oils. I was already struggling with the fact that my process (oil paint, miniature, getting fixated with representation) was taking too long. Too many stories in my head and taking one year to finish one painting in the midst of parenting and homeschooling just didn’t cut it. So, this time I tried something new. I let go. Ugh. I HATE how cheesy that sounds 🙄 but if I had to sum up all the ways in which this painting is different, it is that. And I had fun, a lot of fun. Details coming soon!

Rinse and repeat till you get that little face right. So much harder to do in this tiny scale — at least in this season of life. And when did I even care about capturing likeness? When I started this series on motherhood/parenting, getting them to look like my kids was never my intention. But somehow this has become a meaningful part of the conversation and of course there is a part of me that enjoys the process of painting and seeing them this way. Nevertheless, in this season when I have more stories in my head than I have time to tell, perhaps scaling up will make room for quicker impressions of faces and places while allowing me to playfully collage in all the random stuff that I see everyday that make me go, “ooh, I really want to paint that! (But I already have something going that’s going to take a gazillion months to finish, so let’s just put it in the notebook of dreams.)” So, yeah… 🦷
