This very simple looking frame was one of the toughest to get right, finding the location and, more importantly, the sun’s placement. We scouted Long Beach with Google Earth, did 2–3 time-of-day tests on site, and hauled gear into the field like a mini hike each time.

We scheduled our shoot day with De La Harpe. As soon as we finished the hike and unloaded, my buddy Johnny called on his day off. I invited him to set and he showed up with pizza. Suddenly it felt like high school again, Moyses, Johnny, and I making movies like old times

For the light, I studied Cillian Murphy’s eyes to see where the light was coming from. He had a cool blue edge, two catchlights and of course some neg on frame left. For teh blue edge, we built reflector boards that reflected the sun into diffusion, then taped every piece of CTB I own onto the diffusion layer; added negative fill on the left with a black rag, and top diffusion for the sun. We were using the sun to our advantage with limited resources, but we still needed a catchlight to get that nose shadow. Our one portable light, the Amaran 60D, was exactly what we needed to nail exposure. De La Harpe wore the same wardrobe as our last Oppenheimer recreation; Moyses misted the hat to match the look. We waited for the sun to hit just right! I even had De La Harpe close his eyes and open them for two seconds at a time since the light was right by his face, only sparking the light for three seconds at a time. After a couple attempts, we got the shot we needed and enjoyed the sunset as we wrapped.

Coloring this was the most complicated to get right. I did three color passes to land the palette I’d been chasing. It took patience, tests, research, and a very specific sun window, but we got it, and I couldn’t be happier with how our team did in this competition.

Our @shotdeck Recreations 2025 entry from SINNERS. 🎬
For wardrobe, we thrifted everything except the vest. We compromised with a tan one, then hit Michaels to dye it that perfect yellow from the film. The necklaces for Smoke were easy since I already had a matching medallion. For the second necklace, I found a SmallRig pouch that felt spot-on and tied a string to it. Saul had a black guitar on deck, and we already had a watch on standby.
The casting came together beautifully. I’ve known Jataun for years and always wanted to work with him, I thought he’d be a perfect Michael B. Jordan to play Smoke; this was the moment. He also helped us bring in Dareionte to play Sam. As soon as they got in the wardrobe it made more sense than we could have imagined. To finish, our MUA Eilani gave the looks our talent needed, all the way to the smallest detail on wardrobe.
Lighting this was the biggest thing to figure out. I saw a BTS YouTube video that Autumn Durald Arkapaw lit this scene with a massive soft source overhead; sadly, all we had was an Amaran 60D and a softbox. For our “fire” key, we ran power off Moy’s truck with extension cords, only to learn we could push the light to 80% max output. It was just enough to nail exposure. And of course, waiting for the exact moment we needed the sun to hit—which Sun Tracker helped out with!We didn’t have the exact depth of field we wanted (small sensor limits + lens wide open at 1.2), but we made it work. We also waited for the sun to hit the exact spot we needed it to. Turns out the perfect “lake” was in our own backyard… Long Beach. I researched the focal length used in the film and did some math to guesstimate where to land, and understanding which film stock this was shot on helped us reproduce the colors more accurately. This was truly well worth the effort!

We’re hyped to share our @shotdeck Recreations 2025 entry! Recreating a still from Oppenheimer turned into a full on adventure. From thrifting the perfect coat/shirt/tie, Moyses pulling out his childhood Indiana Jones hat (perfect Oppy head size), and staying up till 3AM gaff-taping plexiglass to build the windowed door.
Shoutout to Moy’s mom for the stick-on frost filter we “borrowed” from the kitchen door—we promised to replace it if we win. 😅 We framed the wall and doorway in Moy’s studio and taped the whole door frame black. Took a minute to color it to perfection on DaVinci Resolve… Or as best we could lol. Worth it. And of course, finding our perfect Oppy: our friend @happily_dela_after.

I grew up in chaos, so we rode horses for peace of mind.
20 years later, I bought my dream car, and now this mustang brings me that same peace of mind.
These are just full circle moments on hard ass beats.
