ā€œLonging for the Voidā€ is a project exploring emotionally absent fathers. Although present physically - providing for their families and fulfilling their social responsibilities - the emotional neglect can have a significant impact on those around them

Longing for the Void
The African patriarchal complex is deeply resilient. Fathers are rarely perceived as failing when it comes to providing for their families or protecting them from external threats. Manhood is often measured by a father’s capacity to endure struggle—by his ability to labor, to fight, and to provide shelter and sustenance for his wife(s) and children. The less he speaks of the emotional or psychological cost of this labor, the more authentic his masculinity is considered to be. Emotional expression, particularly tenderness or vulnerability, is frequently viewed as weakness.

This framework often produces a profound emotional distance within the home. Fathers who dedicate their lives to fulfilling what they perceive as their singular purpose—provision—frequently miss opportunities for intimacy, presence, and emotional connection. What remains is a paradoxical figure: a father who is physically present and financially reliable, yet emotionally absent. A provider, but not a dad. I often think about when Stromae said ā€œEveryone knows how to make babies, but no one knows how to make dads.ā€

Longing for the Void is a visual exploration of the quiet emotional conflicts that unfold within such households. The images trace the unseen tensions between duty and intimacy, presence and absence. Some frames reflect the inner world of the child—marked by waiting, observation, and longing—while others look outward from the father’s perspective, shaped by responsibility, silence, and emotional restraint. Together, the series examines how love is negotiated, withheld, and imagined in spaces where emotional absence becomes a defining presence.

ā€œAboodie Jalabiyaā€

When you have a newly setup home studio and your brother is in town, it only makes sense to put him to work.
This officially marks my first home studio shoot.
It took a total of 10 mins between thinking ā€œI wanna test out the setupā€ to taking the first shot. Used whatever I could find around the apartment to design the set and style the model for this Sudan inspired shoot.
Really proud of this one.

Such an honor to be part of the Across the Diaspora exhibition at @artenoirnow 8/13 - 11/23.. Opening reception 8/24 2pm-4pm ..

This is a special one. As an African in the diaspora, through my work, I try to explore the idea of home and the cultural threads connecting us across the oceans. this exhibition feels particularly personal. With 4 pieces in the exhibition, I try to showcase different angles of the story, some nostalgic and joyful and some painful, but all true.

One exhibition is never going to be enough, but I am certain that with the group of incredibly talented artists included, and the curation, the story will feel whole.

Thank you again to @artenoirnow for including me on this opportunity, and I’m super excited to see everyone at the reception on 8/24. taken in Seattle, Washington by @procrastinagraphy

Reflection

I almost forgot how far I’ve come.
Some days I get lost in the doing —
the pressure, the plans, the quiet voice that says I should be further by now.
It’s easy to forget how far I’ve come when I’m only focused on what’s next.
But when I pause — really pause —
I remember the version of me from just 2.5 years ago, purchasing my first ā€œrealā€ camera, a Nikon D3500, learning everything I could, hoping for one small opportunity.

My first exhibition was with PCNW (@photocenternw )
I remember how excited and nervous I was, how surreal it felt to be showing work in a gallery. Amongst incredibly talented photographers. Felt like an imposter really.
Since then, there’ve been a fair amount of painful rejections, and many failed attempts at breaking through the Seattle freeze (it’s very real, do better Seattleites) but also some truly humbling moments — exhibiting at Arte Noir @artenoirnow , the African American Museum in Dallas @aamuseumdallas , the Bellevue Art Museum @bellevueartsmuseum , various businesses during Seattle’s Art Walks. Recently I received a purchase award and an exhibition award from the City of Kent.
And soon, one of my pieces will live at a King County bus stop for the next ten years. Blows my mind. I’ve never even lived in 1 country for 10 years myself.
And many more ā€œhighlights.ā€ None of it happened overnight. It took long hours, a full-time job, and a barely maintained social life (sorry)

But it also happened because of people —
folks who were kind, flexible, patient.
People who made space for me as I learned and stumbled around these new circles and systems.
I’m still juggling unfinished ideas, creative blocks, and the occasional emotional fog and existential freeze. But I’m working on it, with my therapist, an evolving sense of grace, and a stubborn kind of hope.
Thank you for being here. For the love, the encouragement, and for keeping me company on this journey while it’s still unfolding.

Special thanks to:
@shesthequinntobe @jinhochoe @cultivate_the_collective  @madespaceseattle @danielameravigliosa
And the many friends who showed up to exhibitions, art walks, and gave my work the honor to be in their homes šŸ«¶šŸ¾ taken in Seattle, Washington by @procrastinagraphy
