Our dear Natalia Zawada, who was there for us from the very beginning of this project, multi-tasked as a production manager and catering. Natalia was the one who held the umbrella for me in the rain 🥹 and fed us hungry women.

Na het behalen van haar master in Media- en Filmstudies aan de @uva_amsterdam (2016) ontdekte Sarah haar passie voor productie tijdens haar opleiding aan de New York Film Academy (2020). In datzelfde jaar begon zij als Head of Production bij zowel La Ferpection, een start-up videoproductiebedrijf gespecialiseerd in komische video’s voor taalonderwijs, als bij het Humans of Film Festival in Amsterdam, dat zich richt op het vertonen van films van ondervertegenwoordigde gemeenschappen. Sindsdien heeft zij daarnaast zes korte films en één speelfilm geproduceerd. Zij werkt graag met internationale teams om unieke verhalen te vertellen die je laten lachen, aan het denken zetten, of allebei.

“Omdat ik ben opgegroeid in vier verschillende landen, heb ik me altijd een buitenstaander gevoeld, zelfs op de plekken die als thuis zouden moeten voelen. Ik zeg vaak, half voor de grap, dat ik producent ben geworden omdat ik een controlefreak ben. Toen ik Femkes personage beter leerde kennen, besefte ik dat die twee dingen misschien meer met elkaar verbonden zijn dan ik had gedacht.”

After graduating with a MA in Media and Film Studies at the University of Amsterdam (2016), Sarah developed her love for producing while studying Filmmaking and later Producing at the @newyorkfilmacademy (2020). In the same year she started her role as Head of Production at both La Ferpection, a startup video production company specialising in comedic language learning videos, as well as at the @humansoffilmfestival in Amsterdam, which focuses on showcasing films from underrepresented communities. She has since also produced 6 short films and 1 feature film, always working with an international team to create unique stories that make you laugh, think, or both.

“Having grown up across 4 different countries, I have always felt like a foreigner in my own home. I often half-joke that I became a producer because I am a bit of a control freak. After understanding Femke’s character, I realised these two truths may be more intertwined than I thought.”

🏡Femke woont in een rustige buitenwijk waar alles netjes, geordend, en onder controle moet zijn. Ze brengt haar dagen door met klagen, het oplossen van kleine problemen en het aanspreken van alles wat niet aan haar normen voldoet.

👽Op een middag wordt ze onderbroken door een mysterieuze bezoeker met onverwacht nieuws. Wat begint als een gewone dag, verandert al snel in een confrontatie die veel groter is dan Femke ooit had kunnen vermoeden.

In May we (at the Humans of Film Festival) successfully organised the 2nd edition of the Las Américas Film Festival at Film Huis Den Haag.

It was a big project spread across 3 weeks showcasing 10 feature films and 11 short films from 13 different countries, including over 5 languages.

It’s not just a film festival; it’s an exchange and celebration of dozens of cultures across South America and beyond.

We had dance workshops, parties, poetry reading, a cocktail-making workshop, a language cafe, several Q&As and panel discussions, and more. Special events and ceremonies hosted by multiple embassies helped make it an even more memorable edition.

The whole team should be super proud. Everyone brought in great energy. I’m so lucky to work with such enthusiastic and hard-working people!

Can’t wait until next year! 🫶💃🏻🍹🥳

Berlinale was gigantic, chaotic, inspiring, overwhelming, exciting, exhausting, and fun.

Thanks to @humansoffilmfestival I got the chance to visit the @berlinale film festival for the first time, experiencing both the festival and special market screenings and talks. It’s impossible to do everything and there was so much that I missed out on, but there were also so many things that I did.

It was great to meet new people, envision new opportunities, and learn about some of the latest trends in filmmaking. I also gained a new appreciation for our own festival in Amsterdam, as of course bigger isn’t always better. I love that @humansoffilmfestival offers a more niche and down-to-earth setting for watching films and doing workshops.

I hope I can return to Berlinale someday. If not, then I hope it’s because I’m going to other film festivals! I’m spoiled in my work! 🫢

Is Throwback Thursday still a thing?

Just looking back at the film & video projects I worked on in 2025: 2 shorts, 1 feature, and 1 commercial. Since that’s next to festival work and easing back from maternity leave, not too shabby.

I always find it a privilege and a pleasure to collaborate on these creative projects. I really enjoyed meeting so many new people as well.

Less than a year ago I didn’t know what pictures to post of myself because I felt a bit lost as a new mom. I was going through major changes in my personal life, my body, and even a little bit in my career. No picture felt like it represented “me” because I didn’t know what that meant anymore.

But now I’m back, baby, and feeling more and more like myself again (or rather a slightly altered version). 😎

So thanks again Mimi and @vicubs for helping me capture that. 🫶

Hello world! It’s me again. As you may or may not have seen, I’ve returned to the hubbub of the media and culture industry. 🤩

I’m very proud to now be a regular team member of Stichting Humans of Film, where I produce and organise events. Our 3 biggest projects include the @humansoffilmfestival , in which I first got involved since its launch in 2020, @lgbtqhumansofamsterdam , and most recently @lasamericasfilmfestival .

But that doesn’t cover everything.

2 weeks ago we organised a film screening and fundraising event in collaboration with Stichting Soamiely, to help shed light on how Madagascar’s colonial history still affects its social, economic, and political state. I didn’t even know “Malagasy” is the adjective for Madagascar - shows how much I knew! 😬

Last Saturday we organised a free public event to talk about the fair practice code in the LGBTQI+ community. It included lectures, a short film, and spoken word, singing, and music performances. Despite being part of production, I don’t usually get the chance to meet the performers and special guests until the day of, and every time I feel so moved and inspired by the stories they share. That’s one of my favourite parts of working with Humans of Film (the human part… as well as obviously the film part 🤪).

Humans of Film focuses on connecting people and sharing stories of marginalised communities, particularly if they relate to women, LGBTQI+, migration, mental health, the environment, social injustice, and/or discrimination. We organise film festivals and screenings to provide a platform and safe space for these stories to be shared and heard, while recognising that film is one of the strongest ways to tell these stories and connect with people.

Our next big event is the Humans of Film Festival 19-21

Was so happy to help organise the first edition to @lasamericasfilmfestival on May 3rd.

It did mean a little bit of missing out on the dancing, partying, and poetry performances, but at least I got a quick taste of some of the food. 🤤

Next year it’s gonna be even BIGGER and BETTER. So many opportunities here to help spread South American culture and stories in The Netherlands. 🤩 ¡Vamos!
