Do you suffer from muddy mixes? Let’s fix it!⬇️

1. Sound/sample selection is the most important part.
Your first line of defense against a muddy mix starts before the mixing process. The easiest way to avoid a muddy mix is to ensure that you’re working with the cleanest possible samples, presets, and recordings. Actively seek to get better at the sound selection!

2. Keep your low end in MONO.
Foundational sources like kick and bass should almost always be mono. Phase issues created by stereo effects on these sounds can cause problems in your low end.

3. Don’t be afraid to filter out unnecessary low frequencies.
Get rid of the unnecessary low of all the instruments other than the kick & bass/808. The high pass filter (sometimes called a low cut filter) is ideal for removing low-frequency information that’s muddying up the mix.

4. The annoying low mids...
The most common part of a mix that gets muddy is the 200-500Hz area. Use a bell-shape with a narrow Q-shape boost. Sweep the low-mid in search of these muddy frequencies. Flip the boost to a 1-3db cut!

5. Panning is more important than you think...
Good panning will give each instrument its own space in the stereo image so it’s not fighting other instruments. Your lead vocal, kick, snare & bass should be in the middle, pan everything else to the side!

6. Last, but not least: gain staging
During or before you start mixing, you need to keep in mind that you need to keep enough headroom. Not only is this a good habit, but it keeps the mix from getting distorted and sounding muddy. Aim for an average level of -18 dBFS with peaks around 9-10 dBFS.

Which cables on the list are you currently using?🔌 Comment below!👇

Here is a short explanation of some of the cables on the list:

Let’s first start with the most common question about analog cables…

What’s the difference between balanced and unbalanced cables?

✅Unbalanced cables have a bigger chance of picking up radio interference and noise.

✅Balanced cables on the other hand are designed to cancel out those interferences and electrical hums.

Types of cables:

🔷XLR Cables
XLR cables are always balanced cables. They snap into place – so you won’t unplug them by mistake if you pull on them. XLR cables are used to connect: Microphones, Powered speakers, PA systems, some Instruments.

🔷TRS Cables
TRS are connectors that have three wires inside, as I’ve explained with balanced cables. They’re easy to spot because of the two rubber stripes on the connector.

🔷TS Cables
TS connectors are always unbalanced. Why? Because they contain two wires: one conductor and one ground. They’re the ones with one rubber stripe on the connector. They’re handy for gear that has a mono output: guitars, mono effects pedals, some synths and drum machines

🔷MIDI Cables
MIDI cables are used to sync and communicate instructions between gear.

Hope this helped!

Basic Drum Buss Chain You Should Try Out ↓

🔷 Compression
Use slow to medium attack & fast release to get more punch. Aim for -1,5 to -5 dB gain reduction.

🔷 Tape Saturation
Tape will give you some harmonic distortion that is going to help tie your drums together.

🔷 EQ
After compression & saturation, you can lose some upper mids & highs. Use EQ to bring some life back into your drums if needed.

🔷 Transient Shaping
Use a transient designer to tighten up the drums by dialing back the sustain a little bit. I usually don’t touch the attack knob, but if you think you need it, use a subtle amount.
