2026 update *the first photo is all real, and barely retouched. the second slide was an early test of an early ai model called disco diffusion - ai completely changed and so did the industry. Ironically this took hours to render. I appreciated it as a tool but using modern ai now is so consumer focused you don’t really get to play and make fun creative mistakes.

I love working in hallways and with saturated colors. I’ve been walking around looking at hallways and talking to people about doing a controlled colorful visually popping moving portrait for months.
One day, while in a disgusting basement level garage with @dandoval_portraits , I brought up this wirelessly controlled/overly cool/ tunnel of layered colors with a stunning model front and center. He just got the @canonasia R5 and collaborating with him at this moment felt right. So we set aside our lives for a couple days and with the good graces of the glorious @anyalaletina and her passion for cosplay costumes, we were able to make this video.

Fifteen years ago, I came to China for the first time and found myself climbing Mount Emei.

Somewhere along the way, exhaustion won. My friend @jeremy_cherson and I decided to stay the night at a monastery on the mountain. It felt like stepping outside of time—quiet, still, and far removed from any summer camp we’ve stayed at, but still comfortable and intriguing.

I remember spotting a monk near a ping pong table.
I’ve always loved ping pong, and there was something surreal about the idea: playing a Chinese monk, in China, on one of its most sacred mountains, in a sport the country is legendary for.

So I asked him to play.

Before we even hit the first ball, hikers started arriving to make camp. The table was briskly moved away to make space for beds. The moment passed just like that—unplayed, but somehow unforgettable.

Today, I’m in Shanghai during Qingming Festival, a day meant for remembrance. It feels fitting to reflect on how much has changed since that first trip.

My eye as a photographer has evolved. I’m drawn now to contrast, to long corridors and alleys that pull you inward, to centered subjects that hold your attention as if the pathway was made for the moment.

Inside a crowded temple, I saw a long tunnel of light and shadow. I asked a monk to stand there.
At first, he posed in stillness—meditative, composed. Then his gaze drifted, just slightly, and that was the moment.

My friend asked if I wanted to shoot a photo with him too. And suddenly, I was aware of my role—just another tourist in someone else’s place of worship, one among a thousand. A woman nearby saw us and immediately asked for her own photo with him.

For a second, it felt like the monk regretted saying yes.
Like he had shifted, unintentionally, from person to tourist attraction.

Fifteen years apart, and I’m still chasing moments like these.
