Imagine being reminded of your magic as you watch children activate their own. It was a cathartic afternoon of laughter and joy as we celebrated the launch of Your Crown Shines by @jessicacaremoor , a book for children (and adults) honoring the journey of Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. This is book number 6 for the Detroit Poet Laureate and 5 time winner at The Apollo. And yet, she held space for attendees of all ages to recover our magic as if our joy were her #1 priority. @darecoulter your illustrations made our hearts swell. So proud of @profpewu for making this incredible event a reality, and Sariah-Rose thank you for having me on your podcast!!! It was great to spend time with @ibiicsuf and can’t wait to go back to support @pa.dekwa it is an incredible space for community. #booksbooksbooks #childrensbookstagram #authorsofig #authorsoninstagram #blackauthor #blackwriter by @profpewu

I'm writing this post and still beaming. A few weeks ago I got to meet up with my friend, colleague and mentor, Dr. Bettina Ng'weno in Baltimore @waterforchocolatellc, and celebrate her recent promotion to Full Professor in African American and African studies at UCDavis. Dr. Ng'weno is an accomplished educator, scholar, filmmaker, and author of so many things you should be reading on African descent communities in the Caribbean , Latin America and the Indian Ocean worlds including her forthcoming book "Growing Old in a New City" which looks at African urban pasts and futures in Nairobi.

But beyond all this Bettina is an incredibly kind and thoughtful person. She is the type of scholar/mentor who sees the complexity and inventiveness in your ideas while you are still languishing in self doubt. She is the kind of friend who shares her other friends-always connecting people of like minds, and she is also the kind of colleague who listens deeply. And as an educator...put it this way I low-key audited one of her classes a few years ago and I've been finished since 2014!

We may be less than 2%, but we coming...Congratulations 👏🏽 Dr. Ng'weno!

Watch our Humanities wall continue to be transformed! It’s a work in progress, but we’re already loving the vibe as our latest HSS mural starts to come to life. Over the last few days, the outline has turned into a colorful creation! 🎨 🌎 #mural #art taken in College of Humanities & Social Sciences, Cal State Fullerton by @profpewu

We can't spell Earth without Art! So excited to see the final mural in the HSS Mural Project starting to take shape on the north side of the Humanities building. Watching the wall's transformation is pretty amazing. If you're on campus, stop by and check it out! 🌏🎨❤️ taken in College of Humanities & Social Sciences, Cal State Fullerton by @profpewu

One of the challenges of doing public humanities work is that you spend so much time “doing” that you often have little time (or energy) to write and reflect on what you’ve done. But I wanted to celebrate this milestone in the HSS Mural project by recognizing and naming the often invisible labor that goes into developing, shepherding, executing, and protecting a project like this.

While the murals by @brianpetersonart @desfigurados and @bodeckluna will be these beautiful visual reflections of the diverse people, perspectives and stories that shape the humanities at CSUF, its important to remember that things like this just don’t appear in place, especially when there are no preexisting models or protocols to follow. There are in person and virtual meetings, emails, critical conversations, drafts of proposals, reviews, community engagement activities, after hours site visits and in this case we also mentored a fabulous @csufdigital Fellow, who helped analyze community survey data and docucent the process @hssmurals.

Some of this work can be quantified, but there are other things rooted in ethics and care that defy quantification. For us, the process is deeply important.

I'm proud to say that my colleagues and I on the HSS Mural team invested in a process that centered artist agency and care, alongside community voices and that comes through in @brianpetersonart "We Are Fullerton.” From our first conversations and concept note through the art now displayed on three of the four walls our process has been rooted in the guiding principles of community muralism, and street art including social justice and activism, community engagement, and collective ownership.

We also wanted to emphasize in visual form CSUF’s Guiding Principles for Social Justice, particularly #3 to radiate an identity of inclusion, #5 to recognize history and catalyze change, and #6 to create an anti-racist community.

Stay tuned for the completion of the remaining walls😀

🌬️We enthusiastically invite you to our 2024 Digital Humanities Project Showcase on Friday, September 27th, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. This event brings together student, faculty, and staff fellows, along with DEFCon community partners from the Museum of Latin American Art, the University Archives and Special Collections and the HSS Mural Project to share emergent projects and curricular experiences developed through the Digital Ethnic Futures Fellowship. The day will feature a keynote speaker, lunch, and lightning talks on projects ranging from a mouthwatering diasporic food atlas to a harmonious database of Bolivian composers, and captivating digital storytelling around public art, social justice, community archiving – and so much more!

💁🏻‍♀️Our dynamic keynote speaker for this year’s showcase is Katie Kalvoda, Founder & CEO of G3 Ventures, and Advance OC. Kalvoda’s work with Advance OC has transformed how communities throughout Orange County access, interpret, and harness the power of health data. And her focus on impact investments and community advocacy align with DEFCon’s mission to engage technology and innovation to positively impact and transform local communities. This year we’re also excited to host a student spotlight featuring recent CSUF alum Yajaira Vilchis Alvarez.
Join us for all or part of this event, which aims to celebrate new digital scholarship and community engaged work, foster collaboration, and reflect on the future of the digital humanities at CSUF and beyond.
A light breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Sneak Peek: Last week @da_artesana and I were fortunate to attend the California Community Schools Empower Summit where we debuted our latest collaboration with @leydaw.garcia and the UCLA Center for Community Schooling. Our project, "Our Schools, Our Communities, Our Stories," shares digital stories from California Community School Fellows, including teachers, students, parents, community school staff, and district staff from around the state.

This project was an eight-month journey of hands-on workshops, where we trained and mentored Community School Fellows in story development, digital storytelling, podcasting, video editing, and more. The product of their learning is an array of digital stories that capture their unique voices, insights, lessons, and the legacy of community schooling. Every visual you see in the trailer stems from these individual narratives. We're incredibly proud of their work and can't wait to unveil more. Stay tuned for more on this project!
