Physical Therapy Day at the station. ๐Ÿš’

Treating firefighters in the fire station, between calls. Taking care of the nagging injuries before they become serious ones, and keeping firefighters on the job instead of on the injured list.

No referral. No drive across town. No burning a day off.

Departments: this is what in-station care looks like.

Whatโ€™s the nagging injury youโ€™ve been ignoring? ๐Ÿ‘‡

If you keep getting massages for your low back and the relief never lasts, this oneโ€™s for you ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿพ

Itโ€™s not your fault. Most massages are just missing the piece that locks the change in.

Low back pain and stiffness often donโ€™t start in the low back. Here, our recovery specialist Eric Octaviano is working on the obliques, hip flexors, and diaphragm. All three shape your posture, and all three can quietly load your spine every single day.

Not all massages are created equal. At Progressive Motion, our Reset work is targeted and specific, and itโ€™s built into our REP system: Reset โ†’ Evolve โ†’ Perform.

First, we release the targeted areas. Then we retrain your diaphragm, abdominals, and hamstrings to restore balance and build that STACK, so your low back can finally let go.

Stop chasing temporary relief. Start building change that sticks.

โ€ผ๏ธMassage promos available. We know itโ€™s an investment and sometimes you donโ€™t know what youโ€™re going to get and makes it tough to pay.

No need to wait to feel better. DM us now and get on our schedule ๐Ÿ‘€

Stiff Mid or Lower Back? You probably are hitting some good drills, but maybe missing some of the nuances.

This is a contralateral crawl. The opposite arm and leg work together, which is the same pattern your body uses every time you walk or run.

Most mid-back mobility drills focus only on twisting. What gets missed is keeping the spine long while you rotate.

When your spine stays tall and supported, you get:

โœ… More freedom for each segment of your spine to move
โœ… Less pressure and pinching through your back
โœ… Your spineโ€™s natural curves protected
โœ… Less tension in the surrounding muscles
โœ… Better body awareness and control

The bottom line: less strain, mitigate risk of injury bc quality of motion is preserved, and movement that feels easier.

This drill trains mid-back rotation, core control, and shoulder blade stability all at once. Thatโ€™s why itโ€™s one of our favorites for anyone dealing with a stiff mid back or lower back. taken in Redwood City, California by @progressivemotionpt

Part 2: Letโ€™s break down the hingeโ€ฆthis time, straight to you ๐ŸŽฏ

If you watched the last video, you saw us coach an athlete through it. This oneโ€™s for you to follow along.

The hinge isnโ€™t just a deadlift pattern, itโ€™s one of the best tools for improving your ability to to access hip internal rotation, thereby improving hip mobility which gives you more usable space in your body to actually strengthen those hips.

Hereโ€™s why: hinging well teaches you to shift your center of mass back and lengthen the glute on each side youโ€™re working. Do that consistently, then add load into the pattern.

In this video, Iโ€™ll walk you through how to actually get into your hips and glutesโ€ฆthe cues, the positioning, the common mistakes. taken in Redwood City, California by @progressivemotionpt

Back pain or stiffness after deadlifts?

Not all hinges are created equal. The hinge is one of the most important movement patterns anyone can learn and most people are missing the details that make it safe and powerful.

In athletes with back stiffness or pain, we consistently see the same three breakdowns:

โ†’ Limited hip internal rotation
โ†’ Difficulty โ€œstackingโ€ the rib cage over the pelvis
โ†’ Trouble turning the pelvis over the loaded leg

In this breakdown, watch how we coach our athlete through it step by step:

1๏ธโƒฃ Load the front leg
The back leg is just a kickstand for balanceโ€ฆabout 90% of the work happens through the front leg.

2๏ธโƒฃ Turn the belt buckle toward the working leg
This increases load on that leg and lengthens the gluteโ€ฆthe same length most people are chasing with a pigeon stretch.

Except here, heโ€™s loading that length, which builds real hip internal rotation and the ability to shift his center of mass over the leg.

The hip wants to externally rotate โ€” watch for the knee drifting toward the pinky toe, so keep big toe rooted into ground

3๏ธโƒฃ Hinge over the foot
As load stays over the leg, he hinges to fully lengthen and load the glute.

4๏ธโƒฃ Hold the bottom position
Knee stays tracking over the 2nd/3rd toe to keep the adductors engaged.

5๏ธโƒฃ Stand up through the midfoot
The left hand teaches the hip to drive forward in space โ€” thatโ€™s how you find full hip extension on the way up.

This is what separates a hinge that builds you up from one that wears you down.

๐ŸŽฅ Full breakdown in the video โ€” save this for your next deadlift session. taken in Redwood City, California by @progressivemotionpt

Train hip extension. Offload the stiff, achy lower back.

Everyone wants to train heavy, move fast, perform at the top level. People struggle with the boring, consistent work that actually gets you there.

Joint mobility and movement quality are the first things skipped because they take patience, not intensity.

This video shows how to use the 45ยฐ back extension machine correctly: for hip extension, not back extension.

We see this constantly with athletes whoโ€™ve learned to tolerate a stiff backโ€ฆuntil lost hip extension shows up somewhere else: less push off the foot, or the inability to finish the top of squat or deadlift.

Try the drill. Tag a friend who lives with a bad back. ๐ŸŽฏ taken in Redwood City, California by @progressivemotionpt

Everybody in a firehouse has something.

A knee that doesn't like ladders anymore. A shoulder that never came all the way back. A low back that's been talking to you since 2019.

Nobody calls it an injury, because you can still work. So it goes unlooked at โ€” until it's the reason somebody's on modified duty.

Yesterday @progressivemotionpt saw our crews one at a time, in the station, on shift. Their own assessment. Their own plan. Whatever that firefighter actually has.

Preventative maintenance, applied to the person instead of the rig.

Most training plans start with a guess. Yours should start with data.

Before your body can move efficiently, it has to be able to move at all. Thatโ€™s what a Player Card Assessment finds out.

Itโ€™s a full movement screen with a PM Performance Coach, built to find every mobility limitation standing between you and efficient movement: hip rotation, shoulder rotation, straight leg raise, ankle mobility, tested left to right and flagged as restricted or cleared. Then we check your breathing and intra-abdominal pressure, because how youโ€™re stacked and how you breathe under load is often the real limiter, not just how flexible you are.

Itโ€™s time to finally see the progress from the work youโ€™ve been putting in. Link in bio. taken in Redwood City, California by @progressivemotionpt

Progressive Motion โ€” Redwood City, CA ๐Ÿ“

A big part of this camp has been the work Iโ€™ve been doing at @progressivemotionpt.

@dr.joeysalgado has been getting me right. He has a great team and a super clean facility that covers all my needs.

Theyโ€™ve got me on their REP system โ€” Reset, Evolve, Perform โ€” and itโ€™s changed how I train. One of the biggest things Iโ€™ve added to my bag through it is breath work. Deep, controlled breathing paired with my mobility and performance exercises has helped open up my body, allowing me to get deeper into athletic positions in a more efficient and powerful manner.

The details matterโ—๏ธ Not leaving any stone unturned!
