The Elephant Foot Glacier in northeastern Greenland is a classic example of a piedmont glacier. It forms a broad, fan-shaped lobe as ice emerges from a confined valley and spreads outward across a relatively flat coastal plain. The weight of the thick ice mass allows it to overcome surrounding topographic barriers and advance seaward in a nearly symmetrical, radially expanding pattern. Viewed from above, its distinctive flattened fan morphology stands in clear contrast to the adjacent terrain.

Glaciers rank among Earth’s most dynamic geological systems. They develop through the prolonged accumulation and compaction of snow, where mass gain through accumulation exceeds mass loss through ablation, producing a dense, deformable body of ice. Under gravity, this ice flows downslope as a viscous material, typically advancing into valleys or terminating in the sea. Although glacial movement is imperceptible on human timescales, it generates measurable landscape change over decades to centuries.
Situated on the Kronprins Christian Land peninsula, the Elephant Foot Glacier is independent of Greenland’s main ice sheet. It belongs to a network of peripheral glaciers and ice caps that fringe the primary ice mass. These peripheral ice bodies account for roughly 5–7 % of Greenland’s total ice area yet are estimated to contribute approximately 20 % of the island’s overall contribution to global sea-level rise, reflecting their greater sensitivity to climatic warming.

A well-known counterpart is the Malaspina Glacier in southeastern Alaska, the world’s largest piedmont glacier. Approximately 65 km long and 45 km wide, it forms through the coalescence of several valley glaciers—chiefly the Seward and Agassiz Glaciers—descending from the Saint Elias Mountains and spreading across the coastal plain bordering the Gulf of Alaska. by @project_national

$In a little over a year, the water level of the Uribante Reservoir in Táchira state, Venezuela, fell by approximately 30 metres. As a result, a Gothic-style church that had stood almost fully submerged in January 2009 was left completely exposed on dry ground by 21 February 2010. The structure, roughly 25 to 26 metres in height, belonged to the former town of Potosí. In 1985 the Venezuelan government flooded the valley to create a reservoir for the Uribante-Caparo hydroelectric complex. The town’s roughly 1,200 residents were relocated, and for more than two decades only the church steeple and its cross remained visible above the water surface, serving as a practical marker of reservoir levels. The rapid decline in water volume was associated with a strong El Niño event that began in mid-2009. During El Niño, elevated sea-surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific alter atmospheric circulation patterns and can produce prolonged drought across parts of northern South America. In Venezuela the resulting reduction in rainfall sharply lowered inflows to several hydroelectric reservoirs. At the time, hydroelectric generation supplied nearly 70 percent of the country’s electricity, and the Uribante plant operated at a fraction of its designed capacity. The temporary reappearance of the church and the surrounding ruins of houses, a cemetery and the old town square provided a clear visual record of both the deliberate landscape change carried out in the 1980s and the sensitivity of reservoir-based power systems to inter-annual climatic variability. by @project_national$

As the sunset paints a serene scene across the horizon, the buildings stand as silent silhouettes against the vast orange disk, while the waves gently mirror its golden hues. On the beach, people quietly contemplate the tranquil view. by @project_national

In 2022, archaeologists in Syria uncovered one of the rarest and most remarkably intact mosaics ever discovered.

The large Roman-era artwork, measuring approximately 1,300 square feet, was created around 1,600 years ago. It depicts detailed and colorful scenes from the Trojan War — the legendary conflict that, according to ancient tradition, took place more than 2,000 years ago between the Greek forces and the people of Troy.

The mosaic is filled with carefully rendered figures of ancient Greek soldiers carrying swords and shields. Many of these warriors are identified by their names written in Greek inscriptions beside them. Alongside the Greek fighters appear fierce Amazons, the legendary female warriors who, in the mythological accounts, fought on the side of the Trojans.

What makes this discovery especially significant is the exceptional state of preservation of the mosaic. Despite its great age, large sections of the intricate designs, colors, and inscriptions remain clearly visible, making it one of the rarest examples of its kind ever found. by @project_national

The “Polish Pyramids” or “Kuyavian Pyramids,” located in the village of Wietrzychowice in the Kuyavia region of north-central Poland. These monuments belong to the Funnelbeaker Culture (Trichterbecherkultur) of the Middle Neolithic period and are estimated to have been built around 4000–3000 BCE, approximately 5,500 years ago.

These tombs consist of long, elongated earthen mounds with a trapezoidal or elongated triangular plan. Some reach lengths of up to 150 metres (and occasionally more at comparable sites), while their height ranges between 2 and 3 metres. Each mound is enclosed by a kerb of large glacial boulders (massive erratic blocks transported by glaciers). These stones are larger and more prominent at the wide front end of the mound and gradually decrease in size toward the narrower rear end. This architectural design is believed to have been inspired by the long trapezoidal houses inhabited by the region’s earliest farmers.

These structures served as individual or semi-individual burial monuments, usually containing one primary interment or a small number of burials rather than large collective graves. The individuals buried within them were most likely prominent members of the community, such as leaders, priests, or shamans. The monuments are closely linked to the social and ritual practices of Funnelbeaker communities in the Kuyavia region and reflect a high level of organisation and collective labour among these early agricultural societies, which relied on cereal cultivation and animal husbandry. by @project_national

The fall of the walls of Constantinople in 1453 was not merely a fleeting military moment, but a symbol of the collapse of an entire system of concepts that had governed the Middle Ages for centuries.

Built during the reign of Emperor Theodosius II, these walls represented the greatest example of defensive fortification in the world at the time, considered an impregnable fortress.

They had withstood repeated attacks for hundreds of years and embodied the idea that cities could be protected behind walls and remain secure regardless of changing circumstances.

However, the siege by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror revealed a radical shift in the nature of warfare. Heavy cannons entered the battlefield as a decisive force, gradually eroding the walls with relentless bombardment, a force that traditional fortifications could not withstand.

With each shell that fell, not only the stones crumbled, but the very medieval concept of closed fortresses and protracted defensive warfare also crumbled.

When the walls finally fell, it was not just a physical breach of a city, but the collapse of an entire era. This event proved that power no longer resided in high walls, but rather in military technology, organization, and the capacity for innovation. From this point, the contours of the modern era began to take shape, as warfare strategies shifted, and reliance on firearms and new technologies became the foundation of military superiority, replacing static fortifications.

The collapse of the walls of Constantinople embodies a clear historical turning point: from a world that trusted in stability and defense to one based on movement, development, and change. For this reason, many historians consider this precise moment—the fall of the walls—the true declaration of the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the modern era, where the past could no longer protect itself against the power of the future. by @project_national
