The chair is never neutral. It assigns position, directs posture, suggests hierarchy, and shapes the terms on which presence is shared. It is both a functional object and a spatial sentence, and, at times, an unassuming negotiator of relation.
This exhibition brings together eleven chairs developed within the SEAM programโ€™s second call, All About Chairs, each working through this understanding in different ways.

Displayed together, the chairs do not form a single aesthetic direction. They reflect contrasting approaches to working with what is already familiar: adjusting proportions, reconsidering structure, and rethinking how a chair participates in the social and spatial conditions around it. The emphasis lies in the decisions made along the way, the points at which something is retained, adjusted, simplified, or allowed to remain unresolved.

The works present a set of positions in motion. Each chair marks a way of thinking about sitting, making, and how we hold ourselves in relation to our surroundings. The focus is on negotiation rather than conclusion, on the subtle recalibrations that shape how an object behaves and how we behave within and with it.

A chair is a position one takes. And positions, fortunately, can be rearranged.

Chairs, Spaces and Encounters
S03 โ€“ Study Visit
Bezheฬˆ & Jeshile studio

Chairs rarely exist in isolation; they shape and are shaped by the spaces they inhabit. A chair in a cafeฬ, in a parliament, or in a classroom does not mean the same thing, it mediates how we gather, act, and or belong.
Building on this premise, one might explore how the simplest of objects arranges the most complex of encounters, how chairs, by their quiet presence, script the ways we gather, speak, or fall into silence.
-----------------------------
Led by Guust Selhorst, and situated within broader architectural and spatial contexts, participants had the opportunity to examine how objects transform into active agents within public and institutional life.
The discussion attended to the tension between material processes and conceptual reflection, investigating how newness arises through what interrupts, insists, or slips beyond intention, a willingness to engage with such moments and the truths they assert, letting them guide the making of a chair, a room, a building, or perhaps even the ways we come to inhabit them.

Guust Jo Selhorst is a Belgian landscape designer and architect-engineer with 20+ years of international experience. Founder of Bezheฬˆ and Jeshile studios in Tirana, he has shaped award-winning public spaces and urban projects across Europe, including Skanderbeg Square and the Pyramid of Tirana as well as award winning design objects such as TAS lamp. by @project_seam

Sitting with Research: The restless chair
S01 โ€“ Lectures
18.10.2025, 19:00, Space 05
Open to Public

Beyond the apparent design, chairs can be read as research tools: they trace everyday rituals, frame encounters, and quietly signal spaces of belonging or exclusion. This strand treats the chair not only as an object but as a lens through which to explore cultural, architectural, and socio-political dynamics; as both matter and material, a speculative site of critical inquiry, where we are reminded once again that chairs are never neutral.

Studio Veta (Jorela Karriqi) will attend to the tension between material processes and conceptual reflection, investigating how newness arises through what interrupts, insists, or slips beyond intention. Design will be approached as a practice of willingness to engage these instances and the truths they assert, and to let them guide the making of a chair, a room, or a building.

Jorela Karriqi is an architect based in Istanbul. Trained in Architecture, Curatorial Studies, and Design, she is currently pursuing her PhD at Istanbul Technical University.
Her practice spans architecture, scenography, and material research, attending closely to the latent specificities of each project and asking how they might be reactivated to open new spatial imaginaries. Drawing on material properties and temporal traces, her works are as much tested as they are built.ย
She has collaborated with cultural institutions including Postane Istanbul, Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, and SALT, while continuing to expand her workshop-based practice through Studio VETA. by @project_seam

Re-Chairs, Re-Aesthetics: Before / After / Again

Space 01 โ€“ Lecture
Open to Public
09.10.2025 at Space 05

Kevin Dizami will unpack the aesthetic lineages of chairs as cultural objects, considering their function, symbolism, and narrative power.

A chair is never just a surface to sit on; it is an index of taste, ideology, and time.
From ritual seats carved in stone to plastic stackables in waiting rooms, chairs carry the aesthetics of their age and the values of those who produce them. What happens when we look again, when chairs are โ€œre-chaired,โ€ re-imagined, re-made do we outperform in the loop of Re, or uncover how each chair quietly rehearses the weight of its own time?

Kevin Dizam
Positioned at the crossroads of design and sculpture, his practice explores the interplay between functionality and poetry, materiality and narrative. Embracing an instinctive and deliberately imperfect aesthetic, each form challenges conventional notions of use, meaning, and memory, offering a renewed perspective on the everyday. Both critical and sensitive, the work highlights the expressive potential of the ordinary and its ability to convey stories. His work has been supported by the IKEA Foundation Switzerland and presented internationally, including at Milan Design Week and ArtGeneฬ€ve with the Teo Jakob Foundation.

SEAM โ€“ Open Call: All About Chairsโ€จDeadline extended: 21 September

The first wave of applications has already landed, full of energy. Yet we know there are still ideas lingering on the edges, brilliant notebook scribbles waiting for the right moment.

Weโ€™re extending the deadline to 21 September to give space to those still drafting in the margins; the hesitant, the precise, the corner-introverts who prefer one more read before hitting send. We see you, :)

Take these extra days, and introduce us to your chair/s.

What to send us:โ€จDossier application consisting of:
Short CV (150โ€“200 words)
Concept / Description / Idea (250โ€“300 words) โ€” with research references, if relevant
Two design templates, each including:
1.Sketches illustrating the design
2.Technical explanation of materials employed
Format:โ€จPlease submit as a single PDF (max 10 MB) named _yourname_allaboutchairs in the following order:
1. Short CV
2. Concept (with research references, if relevant)
3. Chair Design 01 โ€“ Sketches & Technicals
4. Chair Design 02 โ€“ Sketches & Technicals
Submission:โ€จApply through link in bio.

We are on the lookout for that chair that expands the idea of sitting, shifts from function to culture, product to symbol, not perfect, and never neutral.

SEAM โ€“ Open Call: All About Chairs

A chair is never neutral.
It can be a throne, a confession booth, a coat hanger. As one of the most everyday objects, chairs are everywhere: overhearing our secrets, carrying politics, plotting revolutions, hosting brilliant ideas, rituals, aesthetics, and the occasional bad decision.

If your practice moves between product design, research, and visual culture, this call is about your take; a clever, absurd, poetic, perhaps even slightly, deliberately wobbly, never -neutral chair.

At SEAM, we are interested in how chairs can shift from product to symbol, from function to culture. We are on the lookout for that chair that expands the idea of sitting, and holds more than just the weight of the body.
