Did you know that seabirds and sea turtles are highly sensitive to light? 🌊✨ At night, artificial lights, especially white ones, can disorient them. Seabirds often mistake these lights for the moon, leading them to land near the source and hide in dark spots. Meanwhile, sea turtles can lose their way behind the dunes, unable to find their way back to the ocean. As the sun rises, the heat can be deadly for them.

Meet Elton! 👋

Elton leads our morning patrol team in Algodoeiro. Passionate, kind, and with years of experience protecting sea turtles, he knows how to read the stories turtles leave behind in the sand.

Every morning, he searches for nests on beaches where artificial lights and human activities put eggs and hatchlings at serious risk. Finding these nests and relocating them to a protected hatchery gives the next generation a chance to survive. 💚

In this first episode, Elton shows us how to recognise the tracks of a turtle coming out of the ocean.

🔎 But here's the twist: even the experts don't always get everything right! Follow Elton over the next three episodes to discover what happened when he tried to locate this particular nest.

Imagine entering the inside of a volcano and discovering a salt lake.

It looks like a landscape from another planet, but it exists right here on Sal Island.

Pedra de Lume is one of the most extraordinary geological formations in Cabo Verde.

Inside an ancient volcanic crater, a unique landscape was created, shaping the island’s history and development through salt extraction for decades.

Today, this place continues to represent a remarkable connection between the power of nature, history and local culture.

A place to visit with respect, admire with care, and help preserve.

What happens after a nest hatches? 🐢

On our morning patrol, Kevin found fresh hatchling tracks on a busy tourist beach. He takes us through the next step: carefully excavating the nest to check what happened below the sand. Sometimes, a few hatchlings are still struggling to emerge, as we found here.

Excavations also help us understand how successfully the nest incubated and how many hatchlings made it out to sea. 🌊

Youth Environmental Exchange – Sal Island

For one week, the Young Environmental Ambassadors (YEAs) from Boa Vista Island took part in an environmental exchange with the YEAs from Sal Island.

Among the activities carried out during the exchange were visits to some of the island’s main natural heritage sites and participation in various conservation activities, including dune restoration actions in the Costa Fragata Nature Reserve, a visit to the Red-billed Tropicbird colony in the Serra Negra Nature Reserve, a visit to the Scientific Marine Turtle Conservation Nursery, night patrols, beach clean-ups, as well as moments of leisure and social interaction.

This activity was carried out as part of the RESILAO project, funded by @prcmarine

We would also like to thank Projeto Tartaruga da Boa Vista, @bioscaboverde , the Sal Municipal Council, the Ministry of Education, the Second Military Region of the Armed Forces of Cabo Verde, and Explore Cabo Verde for their support and collaboration in making this initiative possible.

These were valuable moments of learning, sharing and connection, strengthening the young participants’ commitment to environmental conservation. by @projectbiodiversity

Each rock reveals a part of the island’s past.

Each species helps keep this ecosystem alive.

It is a place to admire.
But also a place to respect.

Monitoring our seabird colonies in northern Sal

Our team continues to monitor seabird colonies in the north of Sal, documenting nests, breeding activity and the overall condition of these important habitats.

Regular monitoring helps us better understand these populations, identify potential threats and support the long-term protection of Sal’s seabirds. 🌊
