ECAP II trains 159 Community Case Workers in Disease Outbreak Preparedness

Project Concern Zambia (PCZ) has integrated into the Empowered Children and Adolescent Program II (ECAP II) case management program, Community Based Surveillance (CBS) for early detection and reporting of #polio, #malaria , #tb #malnutrition and other diseases of public health concern. In the wake of the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak declared in the Democratic Republic of Congo, ECAP II in collaboration with the Ministry of Health Zambia and the Zambia National Public Health Institute conducted CBS trainings for 159 Community Case Workers in Kabwe, Kapiri, Mkushi and Serenje Districts.

Although Zambia has not recorded any Ebola cases, the presence of the disease in a neighboring country remains a regional public health threat. After the training, the community Case Workers will be able to identify cases and events of public health importance in the communities where they live and to report suspected cases, conditions or events to the nearest local health facilities.

PCZ Participates in the National Vaccination Campaign Against Poliovirus Type 2: 13,000 Children are Vaccinated!

In February 2026, the Ministry of Health Zambia (MOH) in Zambia detected vaccine-linked poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) in environmental sewage samples in Lusaka. With the threat the detection pauses, particularly the threat of human cases of paralysis, the MOH declared a national public health emergency. As part of the emergency response, MOH launched the novel Oral Polio Vaccine type 2 (nOPV2), the World Health Organization( @who ) recommended vaccine to stop outbreaks of cVDPV2, and led a four-day (April 20, 2 – April 23, 2026) supplementary immunization campaign in Central, Eastern, Lusaka, Muchinga, Southern, and Western Provinces.

During the campaign period, PCZ leveraged its Empowered Children and Adolescents Program (ECAP) platforms in Central, Muchinga, Southern, and Western provinces, to support MOH, through the over 500 ECAP Community Case Workers/Community Health Workers, to take vaccination services to children under five years of age to as close to their homes as possible.

The ECAP Case Workers, working in close collaboration with primary health care workers, vaccinated over 13,000 children in Central, Southern, Muchinga and Western Provinces during the campaign period.

Supporting Adolescent Mothers’ Education in Zambia

To all our donors and to @globalgiving :

Thank you for your generosity and kindness! With your support, Project Concern Zambia have so far sent back and/or retained in school 21 Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) in 6 districts in Zambia who were at risk of dropping out of school because of teenage pregnancy, child marriage, poverty, or disease, particularly HIV.

We also give gratitude to the generosity of the American people and @statedept , U.S. Embassy Zambia and @helmsleytrust who have been supporting us to build resilient community health systems and platforms through which we are identifying the AGYW and giving them comprehensive support to address the socioeconomic determinants of health.

Zambia marked World AIDS Day 2025 with a renewed call to action and a major step forward in HIV prevention, as the Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Elijah J. Muchima, officially launched 𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒂𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒓, a new long-acting injectable PrEP option that offers fresh hope for young people and vulnerable populations.

The launch of lenacapavir marks a major milestone in expanding prevention options. “This new long-acting PrEP brings renewed hope,” Dr. Muchima said, adding that it will be rolled out alongside existing methods such as condoms, VMMC, and oral PrEP.

He also unveiled the Zambia 2025–2030 HIV Prevention Roadmap, a national strategy designed to cut new infections to 15,000 by 2030. The roadmap outlines five priority pillars and strengthens the role of communities, local authorities, and domestic financing, including the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), in sustaining the HIV response.
