Revealed at @ArtBasel in Basel today!

As part of Basel Exclusive, we are pleased to present

Jochen Lempert
Aves-Uccelli
1997 - 2013
9 photographs, gelatin silver prints
c-u / each: 59 x 48 cm
Overall dimension: ca. 187 x 154 cm
Edition 6/6

unveiled today during the opening of the fair.

The work chosen for the Basel Exclusive initiative is Jochen Lempert's Aves (Uccelli) (1997-2013), which belongs to one of the most iconic works in the artist's career. It is a set of 9 photographs of bird specimens arranged in a grid, shot in natural history museums. This untouched-up black-and-white photos subtly took their place in the history of photographic typologies in a way that was both subversive and dissident. With works like this, Lempert’s approach soon defined a unique artistic position, discreetly constructed without any concession to the dominant trends and canons of contemporary photography.

Aves (Uccelli) calls to mind not only the presentations in natural-history museums. There is an even stronger sense that what we are looking at are portraits.

Discover the work at our booth Hall 2.1 - Booth K3.

Over five decades, Allen Ruppersberg has developed his unique voice in conceptual art. He is an avid collector, a vernacular anthropologist who has spent years amassing an immense trove of postcards, educational films, magazines, posters, books, obituaries, newspaper clippings, records, objects, and paper ephemera of all kinds.

The 1994 series of drawings, “Study for Bookmark,” is a graphite-and-ink representation of single-column newspaper articles copied from the obituaries section of The New York Times, published in the 1990s. Unlike what is typical in the press, these are not writings of famous people. They are short texts that commemorate “anonymous” people who died from AIDS.

Pieter Vermeersch’s work has evolved consistently through a strong and unbreakable single-mindedness of artistic vision. Color and light, time and space, and the intersection of these intangible elements are the notions that have been explored by the Belgian artist since the very beginning of his career in the late nineties.

An artistic research that continues, flowing and expanding with experimentation on new materials. The mural works and his works on canvas, always coexisting in his practice and not being possible one without the other, are complemented by his most recent works on natural stones.

Made on recycled paper, found and often used notebook paper, LUCE’s works on paper are, at the same time, cartographies and diaries, annotations and guides. Fragmented accounts of his wanderings around the city and its outskirts, together with some reflections of a more introspective nature.

LUCE’s artistic practice is born linked to his walks through the city and its periphery. His work mainly translates into subtle site-specific interventions, in photographic compositions that document their actions, in works on paper as well as pieces created from objects he finds along his walks around the city.

The circle appears in Matt Mullican’s work profusely. The works “coupled” for our presentation at Art Basel, Untitled (Cosmology Circles) of 2024 and Untitled (Heaven) (1987), almost 4 decades apart, are a quite good combination of one of the artist‘s iconic developments: the cosmology chart and the invention of the sign for “heaven”.

Mullican investigates how processes of signification work and how objects become charged with meaning. This has led him to develop his own subjective five-part classification system, which he calls his “Five Worlds Theory”.

Marc Nagtzaam has been producing a body of work that is based on one main subject: the idea of pattern, the repetition. He draws lines, grids, circles, words, or sentences as in an endless search for collecting all possible combinations. The repetition and the graphic structure of his works seems reminiscent of minimal and conceptual aesthetics. Most of Nagtzaam’s drawings consist of colorless, darkly filled-in graphite surfaces. Abstracted elements from architecture, graphic design, details from found photographs, or parts from previous drawings are starting points for every series of works.

At Art Basel 2026, we will be presenting a selection of recent and newly produced Riso prints. In these works, Nagtzaam expands his characteristic visual language of geometric inflections by incorporating colour for the first time. These prints are part of his latest exhibition, Artists Only, at ProjecteSD.
