R1/D started as a design study. I wanted to see if I could design a car from scratch and actually understand why every part of it was there.

Somewhere along the way, “I’ll probably never build this” turned into a set of ridiculously wide wheels sitting in the back of my Civic.

So I guess we’re building it.

Day 38 of designing a vintage F1 Car
Finding a steering rack for this car turned into more of a rabbit hole than I expected.

I needed a center-drive rack that was affordable and somewhere in the ballpark of the geometry I’d already designed. After enough digging, the Porsche 914 rack kept coming up.

There weren’t enough dimensions available for me to know for sure, but at $175.60, I figured it was worth finding out. by @projectr1d

One job? In this economy?

The forward cockpit bulkhead won’t just tie the two sides of the monocoque together. It’ll also carry the rear pickup for the front lower suspension arm.

Fewer separate parts, cleaner load paths, and more function built directly into the structure. by @projectr1d

I was making the bulkheads way more complicated than they needed to be.

I’m moving away from formed sheet and toward machined aluminum instead. There’s period precedent for machined and cast bulkheads, and this approach feels much more achievable.
I’m much more confident in this direction. by @projectr1d

The monocoque is reaching its final form.

Instead of a fully enclosed aluminum structure, I’m moving to two structural sponsons joined by the floor and bulkheads, with a separate composite upper body for aero.

It’s simpler, cleaner, and gives me a much clearer path forward. by @projectr1d

Update on the monocoque is coming soon! In the meantime. I’m excited to announce I’m planning to launch This Cycle, the tech-free tool for ADHD entrepreneurs.

Instagram’s algorithm doesn’t seem to like showing my face to strangers, so I figured I’d use that to talk to my followers instead.
(I promise, Instagram. I don’t take it personally.)

Day 34: Working on this project feels like real discovery.
Noticing how my perception of these components and understanding of their design has evolved is truly one of the great benefits of the R1/D for me. by @projectr1d

Day 33: Houston, we have a solution.
That goodness for GT40 forums. I knew others must have had similar challenges linking Audi O1E to Corvette hubs. And sure enough. They have. And on those forums I found someone suggesting the use of Porsche 930 CV joints.
These joints are incredibly versatile and are basically built to be used in modular cases like this. And the best part? So many people already have designed stub axles and adapter plates for these CV joints. by @projectr1d
