Day 3 of Project WASH: 120 students, one conversation about hand hygiene. 🧼💧

At Divine Mercy Group of Schools, we joined the students during their assembly for an interactive hygiene education session.

We introduced the story of Mary Mallon, explored why hand hygiene matters, and used an abstract demonstration to make proper handwashing easier to understand.

But what stood out most wasn't just what we taught.

It was the interaction.

We asked questions.

They answered.

They asked questions too.

And that's the kind of health education we want to keep creating through Project WASH; education that doesn't stop at “here's what you should do,” but creates room to understand why it matters.

Day 3 complete.

How do you get 100 students to care about something as ordinary as washing their hands?

You tell them a story.

At our first Project WASH school, we introduced students to the historical story of Typhoid Mary as a way of opening up a conversation about how infections can spread and why everyday hygiene practices matter.

From there, we moved into the proper hand washing steps, a practical demonstration and plenty of student participation.

But the lesson for me went beyond hand washing.

People don't always remember information simply because you gave it to them. They remember when they can connect with it.

That's why storytelling matters in public health communication.

The goal isn't just to tell people what to do.

It's to help them understand why it matters, and give them something they can carry beyond the classroom.

Project WASH didn't' start with perfect conditions. We started with what we had.

For our first Project WASH hygiene session, I had to improvise almost everything, from creating interactive materials to finding a way to make them durable enough for the classroom.

It wasn't fancy.

But it was intentional.

And watching those simple materials become part of a room full of curious students reminded me that impact doesn't always begin with abundant resources.

Sometimes, it begins with the decision to start.

This is Part 1. The story continues.

Oh yes!
We took an unusual approach to WASH education in Omu-Aran, Kwara State, we told a story.

The story of Mary Mallon a.k.a Typhiod Mary, a cook in early 1900s New York who unknowingly infected over 50 people with typhoid fever. Not because she was evil. Because she never washed her hands.

Last week, we brought that story into Obi International School, Omuaran Kwara State, and watched something click in the eyes of these students.

To spike things we even gave an avenue for competition to be selected as a WASH Ambassador for the school.

This is what community-led public health looks like. And it's just the beginning.

We're calling out organizations who believe in this kind of impact to partner with us. @wateraidnigeria @unicef_nigeria

Every child deserves the basics. 🚰🚻

A secondary school in Omu-Aran, Kwara State currently has NO functional toilets and NO safe drinking water. As an NYSC corps member, I'm doing something about it. 💪

The BUILD THE BASICS project aims to:
✅ Build a 2-compartment toilet facility
✅ Install a manual hand pump borehole
✅ Promote hygiene & sanitation awareness

Project cost: ₦3,319,500 — and we need YOUR help to get there.
💛 Donate: Zenith Bank – 2436245318 (Precious Kosomolate)

Like, save & share this post — it costs nothing but could change everything for these students. 🙏
