I didn’t bring any paint at all with me to England—I wouldn’t have had the time or space for painting. I’m getting back into it with something a little different for me. This is “Heartstrings,” inspired by chordae tendineae, literal heartstrings. (Don’t mind the back of the canvas, I built this canvas in high school. It’s a bit of a mess.) Photo carousel coming soon!

Also, I changed my handle—trying something new.

The continued transformation of an old, thrifted copy of Euripides’ Medea: nothingness, everythingness, and fragmenting Greek tragedy and its scholarship

A few idle freehand watercolors from this past month, all about “3.75 x 5” on some interesting paper.

More from me soon, fingers crossed!

“Cassandra Watching Troy Burn”

Acrylic, 12” x 12”

Swipe for progress pics + in situ + more

The widespread characterization of Cassandra as a madwoman dates back to ancient literature, and it is a characterization that has often been transformed into caricature. While I do not necessarily reject the characterization, I do reject the caricature. In painting this piece, I wanted to subvert the expected presentation of Cassandra and provide a glimpse at a more subdued moment of human exhaustion in the face of certain defeat and destruction. Here: a world aflame, her eyes alight, her mouth posed as if to offer a final, futile warning.

On a personal level, “Cassandra Watching Troy Burn” represents the bridge between the artist I was and the artist I am becoming. The work on this piece was completed over the course of three years, but to say I spent three years working on it gives the wrong impression. Most of those three years were spent watching and waiting, often going months without touching it. She became a familiar fixture on my desk, always seeing, never speaking. She gave me a lot to think about.

Dear Cassandra, in the version where everyone listens to you, Troy never burns and you never die. Dear Cassandra, still cities are burning and still not everyone is listening.

Backlog from summer… I rarely if ever paint directly from one reference photo, especially if it’s not my own photo, but when first single from Everybody Scream came out from @florence I was so captivated by the cover photo by @autumndewilde I decided to give it a shot. I focused more on translation than replication, I worked with a limited palette and paid more attention to my colors and brushstrokes than proportions details.

So excited to listen to the full album!

Swallowtail August

Acrylic, dried flowers, tissue paper, and embroidery thread on canvas, 12” x 12”

This little piece is an exploration of texture inspired by watching butterflies and letting the rest of world fall away…
(And, of course, I continue to experiment with using satin black paint with other matte colors.)

Hi from Oxford! I’m back in school, and my art space is once again shared with my academic work. I’ve got a bit of backlog art to post from the end of summer, and in the meantime I’m still at work making new things in a new space. Fall forecast looks like still life realism and architectural sketches…

Still Life from observation (another finger-painting)

Acrylic finger-painting on distressed cardboard, 7.75” x 8.75”

Finger-painting on this smaller scale was a lesson in summarizing information, and working from observation was a lesson in changing light. The cardboard texture was totally new, and I love how it worked with the movement of my hands.
