We hope you’ll join us on Wednesday, May 6, 7:30–9:30 PM at the Wythe Hotel (@wythehotel) to celebrate the launch of Nude Ascending a Staircase by Sam Lavigne (@samlavigne) and Georgica Pettus (@georgica), the sixth issue of the collaborative artist book series prompt: (@promptcolon).

Drawn from an archive of text prompts scraped from the generative AI platform Civitai, the project traces the strange gap between desire and its algorithmic rendering. These inputs—part smut, part source code—pair with images that never fully resolve, suspended as shifting abstractions: beige noise, kaleidoscopic forms, orificial buds, floating protrusions. The result is an open-ended vision of bodies in the process of becoming.

The evening will feature a reading by the artists, followed by a conversation on their collaboration moderated by prompt: publishers Mira Dayal (@miradayal) and Nicole Kaack (@kaackattack).

The publication is now available for preorder! If you’d like to pick up your copy at the event, use code PICKUP on prompt:’s website to waive shipping.

RSVP at the link in the @promptcolon bio

🗓 Wednesday, May 6, 7:30–9:30 PM
 📍 80 Wythe Ave, Brooklyn
 🍸 Complimentary drinks

Many thanks to Alessandra Gómez (@alessandrrraaa) for hosting us as curator of the Wythe Hotel Art Program! ⭐️ taken in Wythe Hotel by @promptcolon

Please join us this Thursday, April 3rd, at 6pm PDT/ 9pm EDT for "Palestine in Print: Publishing and Archiving as Tools for Resistance," a hybrid event with @letterformarchive. RSVP at link in bio!

Prompted by artists’ responses to the genocide in Gaza, Palestine in Print examines the critical role of print media in protecting and archiving endangered voices, histories, and traditions. Artists Ren Allathkani (@folkloren_) and Kate Laster (@howlingmoondog), our publisher Nicole Kaack (@kaackattack), and archivist MJ Fair will present recent publications that center communities allied with Palestinian liberation:

Passport of Witness (2024); a zine by California Jewish Artists for Palestine (2024); Prints for Palestine (2024); and art and zines by Librarians and Archivists with Palestine.

While employing distinct strategies and materials, each of these projects emphasizes that publishing can itself be an act of resistance. A moderated dialogue will explore the role of printed matter as a tool to preserve communal memory amid and against censorship, while also attending to the key roles of archivists and librarians in engaging wider networks.

Audience Q&A will follow. We're excited to share and discuss these projects and hope to see you there, in person or online!

STORE FOR RENT: Kazimir Malevich, Black Square, 1915

In August, celebrating the launch of prompt:’s fifth issue, Provenance Research, prompt: editors Mira Dayal and Nicole Kaack led a walking tour of “artworks” of the lower east side, playing a humorous associative game of conflating street-based objects and renowned works of art.

The tour featured “works” by Thomas Hirschorn, Barbara Kruger, Byron Kim, Theaster Gates, Ghazahleh Avarzamani, Sable Elyse Smith, Bernd and Hill Becher, and Nina Katchadourian among others.

Provenance Research compiles a crowdsourced series of vernacular photos that suggest comparison to works of art, attesting to how artworks linger in the mind and enmesh themselves in a viewer’s daily reality, both high and low. The publication takes its cue from an Instagram account (@provenance.research) collaboratively run by prompt: editors Dayal and Kaack.

Thank you to @bungee.space for hosting our launch! Issues of Provenance Research are available in store at Bungee Space and on prompt:’s website.

Join us at @storm_bookscandy on October 24th at 7pm for the launch of “Prints for Palestine,” a fundraiser series of risograph prints archiving the work, words, and activism of pro-Palestine Jewish and Palestinian artists, writers, and performers within the wider community of prompt:, an artist press based in New York. Translating a selection of Instagram posts into print, the series documents social media’s role as a space for response and collectivization throughout the ongoing genocide. By preserving in print content that can be hidden, removed, or otherwise suppressed in its original online form, the series also reflects on this period of rampant censorship—algorithmic, institutional, and systemic. The resulting prints construct a mini archive of a year of protest, solidarity, grief, and mourning. This event will include short readings of the featured texts.

Proceeds from sales will be donated to the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF), an organization that is working on the ground to provide food, water, medical supplies, medical treatment, and other necessities to families in Gaza.

Prints for Palestine includes contributions from Omar Abboud (@omar_abb), Morgan Bassichis (text) (@morgankindof) / Zachary Schulman (photo) (@zacharyschulmanphotography), Saj Issa (text and artwork) (@saj_issa) / Collin W. Elliott (photo) (@n1frame), Kate Laster (@howlingmoondog), and Mahdi Sabbagh (@mahdi_nyc). Thank you for all of your work.

The prints were designed by graphic designer Katy Nelson (@katy.e.n), typeset in fonts by Palestinian type designer Hasan Abu Afash, and produced in Brooklyn by Small Editions (@smalleditionsnyc).

Kindly RSVP at link in bio with a donation of $5, which may be used toward the purchase of a print at the event. Prints are also now available via the prompt: website for those who cannot attend. We hope to see you there! by @promptcolon

prompt: is a collaborative artist publication directed by Nicole Kaack and Mira Dayal. Each issue brings together artists, writers, or scholars who have not previously worked together and are chosen by Dayal and Kaack because of their mutual interests in a particular form of research or subject matter. Collaborators work together over a period of several months to produce a publication presented as an archive of correspondence or a draft for future work. taken in Stanton Street by @promptcolon

📨Submission details:
- Send in images you have taken that resemble other artworks.
- Your submission should include your photograph; the artist, title, and date of the work that it resembles; and a reference photo of the original work.

Collaborate with us! 👯‍♂️ prompt: is opening a call for submissions to our upcoming issue, which will be titled “Provenance Research.”

The project takes its cue from a collaborative instagram account (@provenance.research) opened by prompt: editors Mira Dayal and Nicole Kaack in 2018 and in active use through 2021. Each post included a photo found or taken by Dayal or Kaack and suggested a comparison to a work of art, acting as testament to the enduring presence of artworks that linger in the mind and enmesh themselves in a viewer’s daily reality, both high and low. 🧠

We invite you to submit images you have taken that resemble other artworks, for possible inclusion in an upcoming book. If chosen, your photograph will be credited to you and you will receive one copy of the full edition of 200. Your submission should include your photograph; the artist, title, and date of the work that it resembles; and a reference photo of the original work. Submissions should be emailed to promptcolon@gmail.com by March 1, 2024. 📒 by @promptcolon
