Weather isn’t the only thing that can force your flight off its planned route.

Equipment outages, airspace constraints, and other disruptions can quickly change how traffic moves through the NAS. Today’s equipment problems in the Northeast are a good example of how quickly that can happen.

So when hundreds of flights need new routes, does ATC build every one from scratch?

Not necessarily.

That’s where Coded Departure Routes, or CDRs, come in. ✈️
