New to my page, or just need a refresher -

My name is Nick Zouras and I’m the head of Pro Point Catching

I’ve been a catching coach for 6 years, and have been establishing myself as a “remote coach” for the last two years

In October of 2023, I launched the ‘Drop Your Poptime’ Program with one goal in mind…

Help catchers understand their throw on the deepest level possible

As a result of this knowledge, the results you can expect from my program and 1 on 1 coaching are the following -

1.) Decrease in poptime due to a full picture understanding of a catcher’s throwing mechanics/ sequence and working to eliminate inefficiencies

2.) Harder throws as a result of increased tension built and more time behind the baseball

3.) More consistent, accurate, and effortless throws as a result of consistent and accurate mechanics

Over my time running this program, I’ve worked hands on with over 150 athletes (as of writing this on Feb. 20,2024) and over 40 athletes that have come through the program are now committed or in college baseball.

I’ve found that catchers typically come to me for any of these 3 main reasons -

1.) Upcoming showcase or chance to advance their career and would like to improve their metrics

2.) Fix a lingering mechanical issue that they haven’t been able to fix anywhere else

3.) Perform better in a game, win a starting job, or any other on-field application

If you’ve seen what I do and would like to work with me 1 on 1 through the program, the best way to see if it would be a good fit is to DM me the word ‘POPTIME’

This will open up a conversation between you and my team to uncover what you actually need, and if I can help.

If you’re new to my page and want to get a grasp on what I do, follow these steps

1 - Watch my short form content. I break down bite sized information to let you know what I’m all about

2 - Watch my story highlights to see some of the success stories from the program

3 - Watch all of the throwing content on my YouTube page for a more in-depth look at the program, my personality, and my coaching by @propointcatching

Think of your throwing elbow like pulling back the string on a bow. Straight back. Not up.

When it's done right, it looks like pulling an arrow: the elbow drives straight back, tension builds, and that tension turns into real extension out front.

The common version lets the elbow drift up toward the head while loading. Here's why that matters. When the lower half separates, that elbow is coming back down to shoulder level anyway. So every inch it drifts up is time and energy spent going up just to come back down before you can spiral into release.

Preset it where it needs to be. Hold it there. No flipping the ball up early.

And this one's a good reminder about how progress actually looks. This catcher started about 5% of the way there. Now he's at 80.

A good throw can have one tiny extra load right before it fires. Removing it is the difference between good and elite.

Here's what that looks like. The catcher gets to a deep, loaded position. Then, just before throwing, he dips back a little more, a small reload before going.

In a perfect rep, there's no reload. You're already at max depth, and the only thing that starts the throw is ripping the lead arm and letting the throwing arm pull through.

That extra load costs time and leaks tension you already built.

The fix is to spend more time compressing the spring on the way down, so when you arrive, you don't need one more. Then just let it do its job.

Separate. Rip. Nothing in between.

Most of you are good enough to go quickly to your hand. That's not where the time goes.

You lose it by pushing past your backside, then spending time re-engaging it before separation can begin.

Same catcher, before and after phase two:
Before: ball out of the hand at .71. Back foot set at .34.
After: ball out at .61 to .62. Back foot planted at .22.

That's .12 sooner on the back foot, straight off the exchange, and more time behind the ball to create velocity.

Be patient. Stay connected. Let the ball get to you, then use its momentum to transfer, rotate and plant the back foot.

CJ entered the program with a 2.12 best poptime, with most of his throws in that 2.15-2.20 range.

About halfway through he was living in the high 1.90's and ultimately graduated the program with a 1.94 PR.

He went on to commit to play college baseball shortly after.

Most catchers load and throw in one rushed motion. The good ones let the tension build first.

Watch an advanced rep closely and you'll see small settling movements before anything fires. Load. Load. Load. Then boom, let it eat.

The rushed version tries to load, rock back, and go all at once. It skips the part where the rubber band actually gets stretched.

Here's the test for whether you've loaded enough: you should be so deep that the only move left is forward. You can't go back any further to then come forward. You're all the way there. From that position, there's one thing left to do. Tuck the elbow and spiral through.

Ease into the position. Find it. Then let it go.

If your throw doesn't pass the eye test, none of your metrics matter.

A college coach has to be able to look at your throw and see it translating to the speed of the game where he coaches. The biggest way to get there is backspin, carry and accuracy.

Backspin is how hard the ball spins, and it is what creates carry, the throw that almost seems to rise. Both come down to how long and how hard you can press the baseball and spin it out of your fingers.

Accuracy works like a rifle. Its barrel is longer and stays in contact with the bullet longer. Stay in contact with the baseball longer and you find a more consistent release point.
