A refined coastal residence in Glenelg, Adelaide - shaped by restraint, proportion and an elegant textural material palette.

Soft rendered forms, pale masonry and deep-set openings create a sense of permanence, while layered planting softens the architecture and brings the landscape into close dialogue with the home.

Carefully considered thresholds, shadow lines and framed moments of occupation give the street elevation depth and intimacy, balancing privacy with the relaxed character of coastal living.

Designed around a considered connection to the garden, AJ House frames the landscape as an extension of the home. Openings carefully capture views and light, while informal planting wraps the building, softening its edges and guiding movement through the site. The result is a home where architecture and landscape complementary.

The walls of some homes hold entire lifetimes within them. At AJ House by Proske Architects, memories gathered across continents find a home against the backdrop of a thriving garden, where art, collected objects and landscape lend the spaces a sense of continued discovery.

“This house belongs to an avid art collector with a well-travelled life. Surrounded by tamed wildflower gardens, the home’s restrained nature provides the canvas to showcase his travels and extensive art collection,” says Rolf Proske, principal at Proske Architects.

The 250-square-metre residence was shaped by a brief for a gentler relationship with its greenery – an environment designed to feel as immersive as it is enduring. “This new home needed to sit in a modern form among very established, traditional residences,” observes stylist Stephanie Porter. The dwelling’s carefully planned layout accommodates a full house when needed and adapts easily to long absences during the family’s travels.

A contemporary, light-filled addition designed for modern family life, connects to the original footprint of an original home. Retained brickwork becomes the connection between old and new, complemented by a restrained palette of timber, concrete, steel and bagged masonry.

Generous openings blur the line between indoors and the landscape. Creating warm, flexible spaces that honour the home’s past while shaping its future.

This combined architecture & interiors project explores a playful architectural addition to an existing villa. A rich palette of warm stone, timber, terracotta and tactile fabrics is balanced with the architectural forms, while breezeblock screens and steel elements introduce moments of pattern and filtered light.
