I wrote this poem last night while thick smoke fumes came into my Toronto apartment, miles away from where communities, many of them indigenous burn. Burn not because disasters like the one happening in Northern Ontario right now are inevitable, but because harmful, shortsighted policies allow it to. Despite how grim this poem might seem, I don’t believe we’re doomed, but I do think we need to fight harder than ever to hold the people in power accountable to make real change. I signed a petition to double funding for fire services, (link in bio,) and I urge all of you to sign and share it, but this is just a start.

We need to fight for stronger environmental policies that will prevent these constant disasters from becoming a norm, and we need to remember that as much as this sucks for us in Toronto, there are people’s homes– Whole communities, even—burning up north. Many of them Indigenous.

Most notably effected right now is Namaygoosisagagun (Collin’s) First Nation Thankfully, all of the people who were living in the community at the time were able to safely evacuate, but now, they stay in hotels while their homes are destroyed.

They are being supported by Anishinabek Nation who are collecting donations on their behalf. Please donate if you can! There doesn’t seem to be an official Insta post to share, so I found their Twitter post, and am including the image they used with donation information here altered only to add a plain black background to keep if from being cropped by Instagram, (also at link in bio along with the official Anishinabek Nation statement, and my sources to help you get started on your own research.)
Most importantly, please listen to First Nation voices, first! I am one white person living in the city we call Toronto sharing my own experience, and doing my best to do my research and share what I learn, but I should not be your primary source. Please defer to indigenous voices, and if anything I have said here is incorrect, please correct me! Also, if anyone knows good First Nation creators who are currently talking about this situation, please feel free to tag them here for folks to find! Comprised of 17 poems, White Screens tells the story of The Protagonist (actual name and pronouns… loading,) who is given one last chance to get their shit together and find a steady job. Naturally, they decide to spend it on their newly-rediscovered dream of writing
✨The Great Canadian Novel✨ from their local coffee shop. When a handsome stranger begins frequenting said coffee shop too, they declare him their new “Love Interest.” Unfortunately, the problems that keep them from moving forward don’t end at the cafe doors. Will our hero write the next “great Canadian novel,” unravel their queer identity, and find true love, (as seen on Booktok,) or are they doomed to be forever stuck on page one?

Only four days left to get your tickets for White Screens: Tales Of A Coffee Shop Novelist! A poetry/theatre hybrid (with open mic and music,) comprised of 17 poems, White Screens tells the story of The Protagonist (actual name and pronouns… loading,) who is given one last chance to get their sh*t together and find a steady job.
Tickets are for sale at the link in our bio!

Ps for any folks who rely on subtitles, I apologize for not being able to do that fully for this one! I tried it, but it wound up being too distracting with the amount of text already moving quickly on screen. The song is “Paperback Writer” by the Beatles, and the lines of dialogue that aren’t muted or captioned are “Can’t focus like this at home,” which repeats a couple of times, and at the end, “Coffee Shop Novelist.”
