Collaborative research+creation platform to challenge dystopian/utopian stereotypes & offer more hopeful future visions. Curated by @monikabielskyte 🌱

Who benefits from your despair? Apathy isn’t neutral. It’s a resource, and someone is always harvesting it.

Beyond bombs and gulags, Soviet intelligence refined demoralization into an instrument: the systematic manufacturing of hopelessness. Its target was not only political opposition. It was imagination itself. Fascist propaganda used the same tool. Today authoritarian states, extremist movements on every side and influence-for-hire firms trade in it. Disinformation now mass-produces it, pushing us to withdraw, or toward rash, desperate acts that seem to prove nothing reasonable can be done. This is a lie.

Every wave of unrest, from Paris to wherever comes next, is fought over twice: once in the streets, and again over what people come to believe is still possible.

Hope is not a strategy, but hope is strategic. Every plan that works depends on people who have not been talked out of the future.

“Hope is not the conviction that something will turn out well, but the certainty that something makes sense regardless of how it turns out.” – Václav Havel

Informed hope is not optimism. It doesn’t engage in wishful thinking that somehow, somewhere, someone — a caped hero — will swoop in and save the future. It is realistic: deliberate and stubborn, it grasps the full scope of a problem and stays with it. It celebrates learning over being right, because lasting change runs on curiosity and desire as much as discipline. And it begins the moment a future stops feeling like someone else’s script and turns into something you interrogate, design and learn your way into.

The future is not fixed. It will be shaped by whoever shows up to write it.

What if the most “futuristic” thing you’re being sold is the most passé? Sci-fi trained us to imagine the future as escape — but what we’re so hell-bent on escaping might be where the real answers are.

Before anything gets built — someone first has to picture it. Creativity is the root of all transformation; it lets us see something before it exists. Science then tests those visions, overturns some, and reveals what’s actually there. Discoveries become technologies, and those technologies hand science new tools to explore with. It’s a feedback loop.

What our collective imagination prioritises narrows the futures we can pursue. We keep looking for greater intelligence in gods, in aliens, in machines — everywhere except the living world that made us, reducing it to background scenery, something to transcend.

In parts of tech culture, science-fiction narratives now function less like speculation and more like articles of faith (see: TESCREAL). Once you’re trained to accept fantasy as foresight, you lose the ability to tell real science from science fiction. And that’s what men like Musk exploit — selling us dreams of “Planet B” while their recklessness makes life here more volatile by the day.

We are destroying this world faster than we can learn from it. And it has SO MUCH to teach us:

On the deep seafloor, oxygen appears to be produced in total darkness — an oxygen source on our own planet we never knew existed.

An octopus arm contains extensive neural circuitry supporting local sensing, reflexes and movement. This is already informing soft robotics.

Birds orient themselves by reading Earth’s magnetic field through quantum effects inside their own eyes — the kind of quantum coherence our instruments generally hold only in carefully engineered, isolated conditions.

To borrow Ed Yong’s title, we live in An Immense World — and it is this one, right here. The most futuristic technology on this planet isn’t being engineered. It’s being ignored.

Life is the most advanced technology, not silicon or rockets.

We keep imagining the future as something that happens through technology. But futures are lived in our bodies and through them. We are not brains in jars floating in the vacuum of space. We are interdependent ecosystems that co-evolved with all of life within Earth’s biosphere.

So why is biology treated as an afterthought? It should never have been relegated to a secondary conversation, as if embodiment were merely an icky constraint. It is exactly where the future is decided — or where it breaks.

Biology has always been, and remains, the real frontier.
Take that seriously, and what counts as aspirational flips: away from disembodied, escapist sci-fi, toward visions anchored in real science. Exploratory, creative, joyful. In these bodies, and of this planet. If we are to have a future, it will be embodied.

Embodied Futures explores biomaterials, regenerative systems, health as a design brief rather than a medical problem, sensory and adaptive architecture. This is the bleeding edge much of foresight still overlooks while it fixates on escapist fantasies of AGI and space colonialism.

Sci-fi worldbuilding has never been “just” entertainment. It shapes what we perceive as futuristic.

Too much future-fiction has drifted too far from future-facing science: escape looks more advanced than repair, surveillance looks more serious than trust, synthetic intimacy looks more appealing than belonging, and collapse looks more real than any livable alternative.

Storyworld Design is my way of redirecting that force.

It takes the most effective techniques of science fiction entertainment and applies them to real-world challenges across healthcare, education, cities, climate adaptation, public trust, policy and business.

A document can describe a future. A world allows people to feel its logic.

The form I am interested in is Protopian edutainment: strategic foresight embedded inside worlds inspiring enough to compete with dystopia, and grounded enough to help us map desirable futures, then backcast into the choices we make now.

What if the future could be everything we hoped for — not what sci-fi told us to expect?

I went on a podcast called Dystopia Now to argue exactly that. It feels like a Black Mirror episode is just our Monday. And giving into that despair is exactly how demoralization warfare works — once we stop believing change is possible, we hand over our agency without a fight.

Very little of what superficially appears futuristic actually is. Science fiction has ossified our collective imagination in worldviews that are scientifically outdated — anchored in mid-20th century assumptions, not in what’s emerging from research labs right now. Biology, ecology, cognitive diversity, living systems — that’s the science shaping this century.

Dystopia trains despair. Utopia skips the hard parts.

At its worst, dystopia becomes what I call despair escapism and a product roadmap simultaneously — flattering institutional inertia while leaving the core question untouched: what future are we working towards? And is it one we would actually want to inhabit? Does this build capacity, or consume it away?

Protopia Futures is proactive prototyping: a regenerative future vision based on inclusive values, informed by science, and supported by advanced tools.

The Protopian approach isn’t anchored in optimism. It doesn’t engage in wishful thinking that things will somehow turn out fine without our input. It’s realistic — taking the challenges seriously enough to address them without surrendering the future to fear.

Fear is easy to package. Hope is more complicated.

The politics of fear wins when people cannot imagine anything better. Biomedical disinformation, hate, and isolationist fantasies do more than distort facts. They shrink the future people believe is possible.

They spread so efficiently because they offer villains, certainty, and the false comfort of control.

We have to make learning more compelling than conspiracy.

Hopeful, Protopian future visions are harder to build than fear-based ones. They have to hold complexity without becoming abstract, and possibility without becoming fantasy.

Creativity is foresight, and our survival depends on it.

Feed AI slop and it scales rot. Without deliberate corrective choices, it becomes a culture-eating machine speedrunning enshittification aka platform decay: more content, less trust; more speed, less memory; more output, less reality.

AI systems are being plugged into a web already poisoned by spam, scams, stolen work, engagement bait, fake images, fake expertise, fake intimacy, and industrial-scale slop.

Then that slop gets scraped, recycled, polished, ranked, summarized, and sprayed back into the next model.

AI cannibalism starts when the machine learns from its own leftovers. Degenerative AI (what researchers call model collapse) is what happens when synthetic output sludge becomes the diet of systems pretending to understand reality.

The future of AI depends less on how powerful the model becomes than on the intentional structures we are willing to give it — and the boundaries we are willing to enforce.

The answer is human guidance at every level: what it is trained on, what it is asked to do, who it is meant to serve, what it is forbidden to damage, and where human responsibility cannot be automated away.

*Enshittification is a concept coined by author and tech critic Cory Doctorow

Techno-solutionism fails us pretending every problem is a tech problem. If the problem is social, cultural, or political, the solution has to be too.

Innovation is not about cool tech specs. It is about impact. A flashier interface will not fix broken society.

The best tools assist, support, and expand us. They do not replace, undermine, or simulate us.

We should demand more than whatever tech evangelists are selling this week as the their preferred scenario of a techno-religious rapture.

The future is not inevitable. It is designed, funded, narrated, resisted, and chosen. And we can always choose better.

Future is always a vision first. But not everything that seems futuristic, actually is.

Do we want to inhabit somebody else's outdated fantasy, or do we want a FUTURE that is actually inhabitable?

“During COVID19 complete lockdown in Spain, I started collaborating with Monika Bielskyte on a couple of protopian science fiction scenes and here is the result. Our aim was to depict a more inclusive future world, far from the worn-out western scenario and eschewing the oppressive patriarchal western culture lens, where BIPOC people representative of diverse cultural backgrounds and gender expressions have a central role. One of our main goals was to challenge ageism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia and the resulting erasure's in Sci Fi concept design. Hence, our characters are strong, powerful femmes and non-binary people, and our depictions focus on care, radical tenderness and celebration of life rather than violence, conflict and isolation like traditional Sci Fi. A key thing was to show that bleeding edge technology can also be used for purposes other than warfare and surveillance, but rather as a form of self-expression, art or to help both humans and the planet we inhabit. Instead, we wanted to encourage people to connect technology with tattoos, fashion, music, parades and dances. Prosthetics that are not militarised but rather enhancing our human and artistic abilities, and drones that are not meant to surveil citizens but to interact both with humans and genetically modified and improved bioluminescent plant life in the city. The bodies of our characters are adorned with animated tattoos and wearable devices that do not encode the workings of a police state but are the extensions of their selfhood, cultural and gender expressions.” – Mario Mimoso by @protopiafutures
