Crying a little writing this!

Today would have been Blaise Schaeffer 32nd birthday. On December 10th, a driver fleeing the police hit and killed Blaise while he was out on an evening ride. The driver is still on the loose after running. $25,000 reward leading to his arrest.

Blaise was special to me in his own way, like he was to so many others. Today I would have been texting him, saying “happy birthday” and joking about how he should move to Tucson. We would probably be talking about the Arizona trip he usually took around this time and how we’d be training to be unofficial teammates at TOAD, getting fast so we could be there for each other and count on one another in the races.

Blaise and I would talk about career things, and he had a way of motivating me to keep fighting for a better future, even when things felt uncertain.

I’ll never forget Shorewood, when I blocked (probably inappropriately) to get you and Eli off the front so you could earn your first podium at TOAD, and then randomly showering at your hotel so we could hang out and plan the next race. Those moments didn’t feel big at the time, but they mean everything now.

It’s been hard thinking about the friendship I lost and how easily the people who mean so much to us can be taken away. Today especially, I just wish I could send that birthday text one more time.

I plan to race Tour of America's Dairyland in his memory this year and hopefully get all those wins and cat 2 upgrade we always worked towards. 😭
