The longer I work in food, the more I want to understand where our food actually comes from.

Through @thefooddesignstudio, I spend so much of my working life at the other end of the story - developing recipes, styling plates, photographing products and creating content for some of Australia’s leading food and beverage brands.

But before any of that, there’s the paddock. The producer. The land. The animals. The people. And an entire process most of us rarely get to see.

During our recent trip through regional Victoria, I had the incredible opportunity to spend time on a @bassstraitbeef farm in the beautiful Upper Goulburn Region and experience another side of the Australian food industry firsthand.

And I genuinely think experiences like this make me better at what I do.

Because how can we tell meaningful stories about Australian food if we don’t keep learning about the people and places behind it?

It’s also made me think more about my own relationship with food.

These days I care less about food rules and labels, and more about eating well, fuelling my body, prioritising protein and wholefoods, and understanding what I’m putting on my plate - including where it came from.

There’s something about standing in the paddock that makes you so much more conscious of where your food comes from - especially when later, you’re sitting down to eat it.

For me, that connection made the experience even more meaningful.

I came home from Victoria with a camera roll full of beautiful images, but more importantly, a much greater appreciation for the Australian producers behind the food we eat.

And I’ve got more coming from behind the farm gate - more about what I learned, the food we created and a little more about how my own relationship with food has changed over the years.

Because our food has a story long before it ever reaches the plate.

And as both a food creator and the businesswoman behind @thefooddesignstudio, I want to keep learning about it - and sharing more of those stories with you.

The people behind the @bassstraitbeef event.

One of the best parts of shooting events like this is documenting the people behind the work. From chefs and butchers through to producers and influencers.

There’s always a lot happening behind the scenes but those moments of interaction and conversation are usually what brings events like this to life.

I had so much fun meeting so many new people and capturing all the fun of the @bassstraitbeef stall.

This corn isn’t for your plate, it’s grown to feed dairy cows.

Maize varieties grown for animal fodder are high in starch, providing a much needed energy source for steady milk production.

It looks the same, just not a sweet and juicy as the table corn we find at the supermarket 🌽

Maize > silage.

Harvest runs like a well oiled machine, constant trucks rolling in to pick up the pieces (literally) being blown out by the chopper.

The chopper cuts the whole plant off at the ground and cuts it in to tiny pieces (cobs and all) ready to ferment into silage.

Making silage allows farmers to have high nutrient feed available for their cows all year round.

This is just one of the behind the scenes steps most people never get to see but it plays a big role in what eventually becomes the milk you pour in your coffee.
