I'm very excited to share this Foxy Digitalis interview with Tucson-based artist, Julio Lopez. Their new album, "Cloud Unknowing," crosses centuries (from a 1577 poem by San Juan de la Cruz to a 17th-century Irish penal law song, Judee Sill, an original compostion, and more. Incredible!). We talk about all of that plus tuning systems and theology, mesquite pods, singing, and plenty more. What a joy this was.

August 22nd at The Historic Y Main Lobby, Julio Lopez celebrates the release of their new album "Cloud Unknowing" off of Lobby Art Editions. They'll be joined by Ev Essif and MaiiuwaK.

Julio notes this album is their way of addressing “how musical and spiritual knowledge can move disguised within colonial-religious structures of language.”

two verses from i will do my last singing in this land (1968) by composer and Baptist minister Reverend Gary Davis, whose expansive songs and polyphonic guitar playing so deeply influenced the American (and Irish) “folk revival” movements (alongside many others). the drone sounds were made from re-tuning static radio frequencies/electrical interference in the house i lived in - @pseudo_psuedo

We announced 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗨𝗻𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 last week, the debut from 𝕁𝕦𝕝𝕚𝕠 𝕃𝕠𝕡𝕖𝕫. Each copy comes with an 8 page full color booklet featuring writing from Julio about the music as well as song translations and photos.

“a lot of this so-called “thinking” happened as part of the process of feeling into my own experiences of lineage, finding these songs, finding lines, and looking for a way of holding a feeling in the sound. and hopefully letting go? feeling awe toward all the poets who have seen a “way out”, and endless gratitude for the family, friends, and teachers who have opened my world  to me in my life and lifetimes. (?!?!)” - @pseudo_psuedo

ANNOUNCING: 𝑱𝒖𝒍𝒊𝒐 𝑳𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒛 - 𝑪𝒍𝒐𝒖𝒅 𝑼𝒏𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒈

Julio Lopez @pseudo_psuedo presents their cartological mapping of lineage, diaspora, appropriation, spirit and song in their illuminating debut album, Cloud Unknowing. Released quietly on bandcamp in the early parts of 2025, we are honored to give the album its due recognition a year and change later. Julio excavates, uncovers, and retraces centuries old songs, asking how one can “hold a feeling in the sound and then letting go.” The arrangements on Cloud Unknowing put us in close proximity to Julio - the heat of their voice, the rosin hitting the strings of their fiddle, their embodiment of harmonic complexity. Julio notes this album is their way of addressing “how musical and spiritual knowledge can move disguised within colonial-religious structures of language.” Hidden in each of these songs is Julio’s deeply researched and felt practice of exploring the interwovenness of inner transfiguration as acts of resistance against the outer structures that frame one’s interiority. We hear nods to traditional Irish folk songs, cumbia rebajada, boleros, and transmission arts. The breadth of detail is astonishing and worthy of deep, intentional listening.

Today we are sharing “eclipse”, of which Julio writes:

“eclipse (1943) is by cuban composer Margarita Lecuona, with harmonies in this arrangement drawn from João Giberto’s version. i wonder about how ideas of divine love become manifest in love songs, and in bolero especially… the emotion of separation, simultaneous with the intimation of non-distinction”

We are pleased to offer this collection in limited edition cassette and 8 page A4 booklet with translations and notes from Julio about the body of work, out August 14, 2026
