We took 2 trains to get to the world’s largest MUJI… and yes, it was worth the trip 🛍️

It’s in Kashihara, Nara Prefecture…about 1.5 hours from us here in Kyoto — basically a full day trip, but if you’re a MUJI person, this is the pilgrimage.

I was definitely in the “danger zone” being surrounded by more Muji merch than I’ve ever seen before… I wanted it ALL 😂🫣😂

What’s your favorite Muji product? Mine is probably the oil diffuser… but the snacks are a close second 😆

Ok, so here are all of our Kyoto House (Kyo-machiya) details you’ve been asking for 😊 How we purchased the house, how we found our designer, and also how we found our contractor. We feel so lucky to be working with such wonderful & talented people on this project.

Many of you have asked about the language barrier, but everyone on the team has worked hard behind the scenes to make sure it’s not an issue. We appreciate the attention to detail and the translation of important documents for us, and we also have a fantastic translator on the team as well.

So excited to keep sharing the house progress!

I honestly don’t know why more people aren’t talking about this vending machine 😂. The juice is so delicious! It’s hard for me to pass by one of these machines without stopping.

Fresh-squeezed orange juice🍊, ready in under 30 seconds. Just tap to pay and you’re on your way 😁. They’re all over Japan, and sometimes they have apple juice ones too 🍎.

We ate our way through nine delicious courses at this unique Italian restaurant in Kyoto.

Everything was prepared with care, beautifully plated, & thoughtfully served. All set inside a lovely renovated machiya.

Ludens sits on Nijo-dori, once the heart of Kyoto’s pharmaceutical wholesale district. The restaurant carries that history forward with medicinal cuisine: seasonal ingredients, with peels, roots, and even scraps going into soups, sauces, spices, and herb teas.

We did the Seasonal Healing Course, & and I’m still thinking about it.

Delicious, thoughtful, and I love their zero waste philosophy.

Through an unmarked doorway, and up two flights of stairs.. you’ll find Now and Then Kyoto. Part bar, part lounge, part gallery, it’s a place where art from local artists hangs on the walls, drinks & desserts are made with care, and you can slow down and just enjoy the cozy charm of the space.

I honestly think this might be the best kept secret for vintage kimono shopping in Kyoto.

Modoribashi is a multi-level vintage shop in a quiet neighborhood, and it’s pure treasure hunting. The first floor is beautifully curated kimonos and other vintage apparel. Floor two is filled with vintage apothecary jars, silk slippers, and all kinds of curious finds. Then head up to the top floor: an entire floor of kimonos for just 500 yen (about $3.00 USD).

They don’t open until 1pm, so I like to go around that time.. and I also only go on weekdays. It’s a much more relaxed shopping experience than the weekend.

We almost missed this little gem, but I saw the sign and headed upstairs to investigate 😆. What greeted us was a super cute cafe with a yummy menu & friendly staff at @gogumi.kyoto

So many cool things are up a few flights of stairs or down little alleys in Japan, that you’re missing out if you don’t get curious.

I’ve made some of the best discoveries just by following an interesting sign or a glowing lantern.

It’s my birthday, so I though it was a good time to share a little of my lore 🤣. It’s been quite the journey, but I wouldn’t change a single thing.

Owning my own business has always been a rollercoaster, but every adversity has led to a pivotal moment that ends up pushing me in the direction I was supposed to go.

This embroidery workshop was so much fun, while also being calming & meditative. Our instructor was from a multi-generational thread-manufacturing family based in Kyoto, and the organizer — who’s deeply passionate about Japanese craft — translated every key concept and guided us through the stitches flawlessly.

If you love slow craft, visiting temples, and learning from heritage makers in Kyoto.. then add this to your Japan list.
