For my 500th post, I wanted to try something a little different. This is an early morning image from Lower Blue Lake near Breckenridge, Colorado. The light that day was special—soft and selective as it found a small tree standing among the larger ones and lit it in a way that made it stand out. The water was like glass, holding perfect reflections of the trees, shoreline, and rocks. This was a pretty wild bighorn sheep encounter.

We were photographing a couple of bighorn sheep up in the hills when a guy driving by stopped and said, “There’s a big herd of bighorn sheep heading your way.”

We didn’t think much of it…until we started hearing something coming around the corner.

This was a quick shot of just a portion of the herd--taken while we were standing in the middle of the road. As they got closer, I started wondering who was going to budge first--us or them.

There wasn’t really time to change camera settings--just point and shoot! So while the image isn’t technically perfect and is a little out of focus, I think it captures what the moment actually felt like.

As it turned out, the herd split in two and went around us on both sides of the road. This was the half that continued past us on the left.

A few days ago, I spent some time exploring the area around Guanella Pass. The rain came and went throughout the day, creating some beautiful shifts in the light.

For this image, I really loved the way the sun broke through and highlighted the hillside and mountain. The fenceline and trees made a nice complementary foreground, adding a little depth while still letting the mountain take center stage.
