The History Department is delighted to welcome Seth Rockman (@sethrock74) who will be joining us to talk about his new book PLANTATION GOODS (@uchicagopress) on Thursday, February 13th at 5pm in SMSU 294. Book signing to follow with books for sale from the amazing Broadway Books (@broadwaybooks).

In this talk, Rockman tells the biggest stories of early American history through the most mundane artifacts: shoes manufactured in Massachusetts for the use of enslaved people in Mississippi, for example, or woolen dresses stitched in Rhode Island for enslaved women in South Carolina to wear. In following these goods from the communities in which they were made to the communities in which they were used, Rockman rethinks the geography of slavery and freedom in the decades between American independence and the Civil War. He poses questions that continue to preoccupy us in the age of the iPhone and fair-trade coffee: what are the moral, ecological, and political relationships linking consumers and producers across long distances? What does it mean to be “complicit”?

🗓️Thursday, Feb 13th 5pm
📍Smith Memorial Student Union
1825 SW Broadway, Room 294
Portland, OR 97201

We hope to see you there!

Opening Today! Opening Party on Thursday, 5-8 PM! Portland Fashion in the Aughts, at PSU’s AB & MK Galleries!

Documenting the creative DIY fashion movement of Portland, Oregon between 2000 and 2010, the exhibit captures this pre-Instagram era through images, narratives, and ephemera gathered by the community and curated by former fashion editor of The Mercury, Marjorie Skinner. Portland, Oregon at the end of the 20th century was a town at a remove from fashion’s capitals. However, Portland was gathering momentum for an era in which its “maker culture” would inspire the world. Defined by a hyper-local approach to consumer goods, a celebration of this ethos was about a decade away from being broadcast by the New York Times, Portlandia, and Project Runway. The “aughts” would see Portland apparel designers create an industry that offered unique alternatives to mainstream and mass-manufactured clothing. Aesthetically, it rarely referenced the dictums of the global fashion establishment, more focused on expression than commerciality. The exhibit shares this moment in Portland’s creative history through images, fashion pieces, and film collected to preserve a facet of the city’s cultural originality.

This week over in our Community Features coverage, we are showcasing Portland State University Textile Arts new minor in Sustainable Fashion! Maybe you didn’t even know that PSU had this new minor! If you want to know more about PSU’s Textile Arts program@psu_textilearts , their facilities, and their offerings, take a gander over at textilex.org/stories for more! We talk with Professor Alison Heryer about the origin story for this incredible new opportunity in textile education.

As part of this new minor, PSU Textile Arts is hosting two exciting events that are tied into Portland Textile Month 2024: Origin Stories. One is an exhibition, Portland Fashion in the Aughts, at its AB and MK Galleries, opening Tuesday October 1st. The show, curated by Marjorie Skinner and Jessie Vickery, originated in the archive of material Skinner has kept from her time as a writer and editor on the fashion beat for the Portland Mercury.

The second event is a roundtable discussion titled “Color Origins: Pigment to Product,” that will take place on October 9th, at 5 PM. This panel discussion, coproduced with Sator Projects and featuring Julie Beeler, Trish Langman, and Alicia Decker, looks at ways artists and designers work with naturally derived pigments toward more sustainable applications in art, textiles, and fashion.

We look forward to all of the opportunities and offerings that PSU Textile Arts has in store for us!

Hope Wang | @hopeless_hope is an artist and creative entrepreneur based in Chicago, IL who will join Shelley Socolofsky’s Weaving: Pattern and Structure class for this artist’s talk.  Hope is the founding director of LMRM “loom room,” a community weaving studio working to broaden accessibility to weaving equipment for artists in Chicago.

Through LMRM, she develops events and collaborations that emphasize weaving as a contemporary art practice. Wang was also a founding organizer of Chicago Textile Week 2019 and 2021, an exposition of programs connecting textile communities throughout the city. In the studio, her artwork explores memory, loss, and longing in the ever-shifting architectural landscape. Using both material illusion and abstraction, she weaves between the melancholy and humour of a world that is constantly disappearing around us, and a world that must be constantly reimagined.
