On Saturday, ā€œThe Glass Between Usā€ brought home the Juried Award for Design at @artprize šŸ† ArtPrize has always felt like a homecoming, but this year felt like it most of all. I was born and raised in Grand Rapids, and having people from every stage of my life come see where I am now meant more than I can say. It was a homecoming to my original craft too: garment making and fashion design. This is the most fully *me* my work has ever been. None of it could have happened alone. To my three incredible interns (Sam Foster @re.fractaling, Morgan Lutz @morganlutzart, and Olivia Stier @meoowolivia), the friends who showed up and lent a hand, the Kzoo Makers @kzoomakers community for the space & tools, my wonderful partner Sam Bailey, and everyone who offered advice or encouragement along the way: thank you. Thereā€™s a reason your names are on that plaque. And to my artist and creative friends, we hold each other up, and I donā€™t take that for granted. Thank you, Grand Rapids. After a year and a half of intense focus and three days installation this week, ā€œThe Glass Between Usā€ is ready for you to visit during @artprize at The Waters Center in Grand Rapids, MI. Itā€™s a great honor for me to finally share this body of work, especially after a lot of uncertainty of whether it would come together the way I envisioned. So so so much is woven into each of these garments. I hope youā€™ll come and explore this work with me. Thank you to my three incredible studio assistants Olivia Stier @meoowolivia, Sam Foster @re.fractaling, and Morgan Lutz @morganlutzart. Thank you @artprize for investing in my project through a Seed Grant! ā€œThe Glass Between Usā€ started with sourcing reclaimed pand*mic plexiglass shields. Iā€™ve spent over 1.5 years turning them into the fashion project of my wildest dreams. Six months into research and development, the project was awarded a KADI grant from the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo, and the Seed Grant is carrying it across the finish line. It let me bring on secondhand, top-of-the-line mannequins and pay the studio assistants whoā€™ve been building this with me, hands that had been volunteering their time now getting paid for their skill. Canā€™t wait to share it with you all! You can see the installation at The Waters Center, 161 Ottawa, Sept. 12th - Oct. 3rd. ā€œhunting seasonā€ ā€” worn by the incomparable @parker.korpak This vest and corset set is made of 20lbs of laser-cut reclaimed plexiglass, sourced from over half a dozen covid barrier shields that went up in buildings during the pandemic. These garments are part of my latest collection ā€œThe Glass Between Us,ā€ which just ended its grand debut at @artprize. ā€œThe Glass Between Usā€ has been a pivotal project for me. It feels, in many ways, like coming home. Made almost entirely from reclaimed pandemic barrier shields, I painstakingly lasercut hundreds of thousands of components and reassembled them into these garments by hand. Itā€™s been my most fulfilling and authentic creative expression since I first decided to become an artist almost 20 years ago. Iā€™m glad that its first public outing was at ArtPrize in my beautiful hometown of Grand Rapids. While at @artprize these last few weeks, Iā€™m often asked by visitors how I made the butterfly wings for this garment in my series ā€œThe Glass Between Usā€ ā€” a fashion collection created from over 100 plexiglass barrier shields from the pandemic. I was so thrilled to have some of plexiglass garments take a walk on the runway during @createcollaborateeventsā€™s fashion show on Saturday, just before ArtPrize halftime! šŸ¦‹ In the line-up were three garments from my series ā€œThe Glass Between Us,ā€ which I have exhibiting this year for ArtPrize ā€” all made from reclaimed pandemic barrier shields. I also included two garments that didnā€™t make it into the exhibit, as well as earlier prototypes in acrylic from back when I still understanding how to make garments from this material. Big thanks to @parker.korpak @eva_aaronn @sarahyangtian @itz.neek @a.s.h.o.n.t.e @q.uinnfrances for bringing these pieces to life on the runway at the GRAM!
