NEWS: Virtual-reality to treat OCD?

The treatment would allow patients to come ‘face-to-face’ with their triggers whilst in the presence of a clinician. For example, a patient obsessed with cleanliness may ‘touch’ dirty dishes. Researchers hope the VR will allow patients to face their fears more readily, but the experience will seem real enough to impact their thoughts and behaviours.

News: ADHD medication is being used to treat ice (methamphetamine) addiction in an Australian trial.
Currently, there is no medication used for people struggling with a meth addiction, only psychological treatments. The ADHD drug, lisdexamfetamine, could help reduce mood swings while the users fight their addiction.
The drug is intended to benefit for individuals using high doeses of meth. By using this non-invasive treatment there is hope this will reduce crime and anti-social behaviour. What do you think?

Research: Three out of four children who watch sport make a strong association between enjoyment of the game and putting money on the result, according to a study at Deakin University.
The concern is that normalising betting on sporting events in childhood could lead to gambling issues later in life.
Other research shows that sports betting advertising contains strategies which are particularly appealing for children.
Do we need to reduce children's' exposure to betting advertising? What is the solution?

Research: Drumming benefits children diagnosed with autism, new research suggests.
Students who received drumming lessons for 60 minutes a week over a 10-week period demonstrated improvement in movement control while performing tasks outside of school, including improved concentration during homework.
Teachers also observed positive changes in the classroom, such as improved concentration and interaction with other children and adults.
Should drumming be readily available for children with autism at all schools?

Interest: Can't get enough of oddly satisfying slime videos on the internet? Good news, they could have potential health benefits!
Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) describes the experience of tingling sensations in response to a range of audio-visual triggers such as whispering, tapping, and hand movements.
A recent study found watching ASMR videos can induce a sense of calm and slow heart rates. This effect was comparable to that found in mindfulness exercises and may help reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and insomnia.

Research: Sleeping less than 5 hours a night might be deadlier than originally thought, new studies show.
In 1993, a team of researchers collected information on the sleeping habits of 798 men from Sweden. Participants were followed-up for 21 years for the occurrence of major cardiovascular events (e.g. heart attack, stroke, etc.). It was found men who slept five or fewer hours per night were twice as likely to have a serious cardiovascular event. That increased risk is comparable to smoking a pack of cigarettes a day.
On the other hand, this study shows an association, not a cause-and-effect relationship. What are your thoughts?

News: Celebrations in India begun two days ago when a 160 year old law criminalising homosexual sex was ruled unconstitutional. 🏳️‍🌈 Structural stigma (i.e., discriminatory laws, policies and community attitudes) towards sexual minorities has been shown to predict adverse health and wellbeing. A study published in 2018 examined the life satisfaction of sexual minorities across 28 countries. Findings showed life satisfaction varied greatly across countries, largely due to the structural stigma of those countries.
It is estimated 8% of India’s population- 104 million people- might be part of the LGBT+ community. Decriminalising homosexual sex is a step towards creating equal rights for LGBT+ Indians, and can hopefully have an impact on mental wellbeing in this community.

Research: Older adults undertaking university study show significant improvement in cognitive reserve levels, which may reduce the risk for Alzheimer's disease!

Researchers from the University of Tasmania assessed the neurophysiological function, cognitive reserve, and psychosocial factors of older adults over a four year period. An ‘intervention group’ completed a minimum of 12 months part-time university study, while a control group did not engage in further education.

92.5% of the older adults who completed university study displayed a significant increase in cognitive reserve. Should we be encouraging retired adults to return to study?

Research: Sleep-deprived individuals are less desirable to socially engage with, and withdraw from social situations.
The Centre for Human Sleep Science in California recently found lack of sleep can lead to social withdrawal and loneliness.

A fMRI revealed lack of sleep impairs brain regions which encourage prosocial behaviour and makes hypersensitive regions which warn of human approach. This results in social repulsion and withdrawal.

Research: Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are more likely than other women to have an autistic child, according to an analysis of NHS data carried out by a team at Cambridge University’s Autism Research Centre. The research is published in the journal Translational Psychiatry.

The research stressed that the likelihood of having an autistic child is still very low, even among women with PCOS (2.3%) – but finding this link provides an important clue in understanding one of the multiple causal factors in autism.

Research: People with psychopathic traits find it harder to tell the difference between genuine and fake emotions.
140 participants were tested for psychopathic traits and shown photos of facial expressions. Some photos depicted emotions that were genuine, while others were faked.
The higher a participant scored on psychopathic traits the harder they found it to differentiate between genuine and fake feelings of sadness and fear.
This may be one of the reasons individuals with psychopathy are less willing to help someone expressing genuine distress.
