This past weekend, our very own Kristen and Pooja presented at the Maryland Occupational Therapy Association (MOTA) Conference at McDaniel College! Their presentation explored the power of occupation in medical settings, specifically in patients experiencing anxiety. Check it out!

We are proud of them and their contribution to the world of OT!

¡Feliz mes de la herencia hispana!

This week, our favorite Profesor led us in some Español 1.01! He led us through introductory Spanish to aid us in establishing rapport, increasing comfort, and meeting basic needs of our Spanish speaking patients in addition to use of our interpretation services.

We had a great time learning and practicing introductions and common clinical terms. And guess what, we all passed!

One of the most exciting parts of being a psych OT is the level of creative freedom that comes with the territory! We love a good DIY. Amy recently created her own version of the classic ‘Would you rather’ game. ‘This or That’ is a low stakes way to get patients engaged and build rapport with simple binary options. The process is fun and whimsical, but it allows them to work on skills like treatment engagement, decision making, self-expression, and much more. Would you play? 🤭🧠 #psychot #mentalhealth #thisorthat #diy #funinfunction by @psych_otea

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, here’s your reminder that mental illness does not define a person’s strength, talent, or success! This bulletin board highlights well-known individuals who have openly shared their mental health journeys — reminding us that mental illness can affect anyone, and that seeking help is a sign of courage, not weakness. Together, we can continue breaking stigma through awareness, empathy, and conversation. #mentalhealthawareness #endthestigma #psychot #mentalhealthmatters #moregooddays 💚🧠 by @psych_otea

Our Mental Health Awareness Booth was all about breaking stigma, building connection, and spreading support one interaction at a time. We are grateful for everyone who stopped by, shared their stories, and prioritized mental wellness with us.

Remember: healing isn’t linear, and you never have to navigate it alone. Keep showing up for yourself — even the smallest steps matter 💚

Although April has wrapped up, we celebrate the remarkable work of our psych OT team at any opportunity. Our very own, Pratik, was recognized as a Shock Trauma hero for his work with an adolescent patient after a near-death incident.

Psych OT is special because it allows patients to engage in such a unique way while working towards goals they may not have even imagined being able to accomplish!

We are so proud of the work we do and we honor Pratik for the difference he made!

Let the games begin!

The OT Olympics were underway this week with our patients! They had been unbearably silent during most discussion-based group sessions, so the focus was on gross motor activities, team work & communication.

They laughed more than we’ve seen and were observed supporting one another and offering advice for different strategies. They played cornhole, football, ring toss, ladder golf, trivia, and a feather balancing game. Everyone was awarded with this certificate at the end & we discussed the importance of leisure!

Shoutout to Liz and Jen for a this FUNctional activity!

For one of our recent Clinical Review seminars, we had the opportunity to learn and practice art-based adaptive coping through neurographic drawing. Our very own, Sam, led us through the practice, teaching us to let go of perfection in the process.

Neurographic drawing is a mindfulness technique that involves the softening of sharp edges after drawing free flowing lines. This practice eases stress by allowing new neural connections to form. Notice, it’s impossible to mess up! Color isn’t mandatory, but we added some just for fun :) ✍️🎨🧠 by @psych_otea
