[EN] This was reported in ASquare Magazine back in 1994. It sounds extreme, I know. It speaks volumes about how deeply thinness has been woven into our sense of worth. ❤️‍🩹

Fast forward to 2025, research continues to show that body weight is a powerful social signal, and the uncontrolled use of cosmetic surgeries and weight-loss injections further reinforces fat phobia.

Studies link weight stigma and fear of fatness to increased anxiety, depression, physiological stress responses and eating disorders, which can be deadly. It also pushes people away from healthcare, exercise, and social connection, ironically, the crucial things that support health and well-being. 🥲

This is why conversations about body image are crucial. They’re about health and self-worth in a world that is confused what health actually entails beyond the looks.

Çünkü sağlığın ve öz değerin görünüş olduğuna inandırıldığımız dünyada toplumsal ihtiyacımız sağlığın neye dair olduğunu anlamak. by @psyselenozbek

I am excited to be hosting an in-person workshop at Centre 151, London and invited my brilliant colleague @houseofalmondblossom to share her expertise in appearance of embodiment. We will dive into the social narratives that shape our relationship with our bodies and discuss how to move towards liberation within our own skin.

We will have a reflective, real, and radically compassionate conversation about body image, health myths, and reclaiming our stories. This space is for any curious humans who wants to think critically of beauty and reconnect with their bodies, in their own way.

📍 Tuesday, 7 October | 7:30–8:30pm at the Centre 151

🎟️ Registration via Eventbrite in the link in bio

In this experiential, discussion-based salon, we’ll explore how social narratives around body image, control, patriarchy and health shape our eating behaviours in powerful but sometimes invisible ways.
We’ll reflect on weight stigma and appearance-based social expectations, and how these show up in our personal and professional lives, often leading to a disconnection from our values. This session aims to highlight the impact of the broader context we’re all living and working in, and to open space for more compassionate understanding of our relationship with our bodies.
The session will be an-hour long, please check your email.

See you tomorrow 💜 by @psyselenozbek

[EN] Currently reading Moon Palace by Paul Auster, this line really stayed with me and made me think about human connection.

Often in early or surface-level conversations, we can be speaking to themselves, projecting our own thoughts, anxieties, or rehearsed lines, without truly engaging with the other person. This moment reflects the shift when the character in the book stops being absorbed in his own inner monologue and begins to genuinely see and engage with the other person.

This quote is less about whether it really happened and more about that inner shift, the moment of turning from self-absorption to truly meeting the other person. It speaks to those thresholds in human connection, when we stop circling inside our own minds and allow ourselves to engage, see, and be with the other. 🫂

👇🏼I’d love to hear what this quote meant to you, please share in the comments if you’d like to!

[TR]

ACBS World Conference - that’s a wrap!
Every time I attend an ACBS event or a conference, I’m reminded of why I keep coming back. Learning is part of it, sure, but learning with people who share a similar outlook on life and work sparks a strong sense of belonging.

We don’t just sit and take notes here. We feel. We hold our own stories alongside our clients’, and that’s what makes this community so special.

Here are my five takeaways from six full days of connecting with ourselves, our work, and colleagues from around the world:

✨ Pre-conference workshop with the wonderful @walser.robyn :
This one had us crying, laughing, and reflecting on how, even when everything sucks, there’s still love somewhere. Being bold, open, and loving as a human and a psychologist truly goes a long way.

👯‍♀️Friendships can start with a glance:
A little comment, a shared look during a meaningful memory exercise… that’s how @orioncounselingandconsulting and I clicked this time :)

🧠 Behaviour change sometimes needs a nudge: “Talking about things” alone isn’t ACT. As the name suggests, there’s action in the mix, and our role should involve bringing awareness to spaces that are left unseen.

📚 There’s still so much to learn:
And that’s exciting. It’s why we’re here, and we should never take our knowledge for granted. Science is evolving everyday!

🎭 Yes, we come for science… but also for Follies: ACBS wouldn’t be complete without the night we make fun of ourselves, our work, and everything CBS-related. Last two slides are examples of that. This year, I performed at Follies for the first time ever. More on that soon. :)

Maybe. But for many of us, it’s more layered than that.

I took this video at the Hackney Half Marathon last week, so many people running with purpose. For charity, for health, for personal challenge. It reminded me that movement means different things to different people.

I remember seeing this sentence “You are one run away from a good mood”. There is a lot of truth in that, as well as hope that may not actually serve many people. In my observation, it’s been marketed as a miracle form of exercise, something to do to feel ‘amazing’. Sometimes it takes everything just to lace up your shoes. It certainly is not a fix-all for a rough day or a quick weight loss or boost in mood.

As a health psychologist, I always emphasize that exercise is not about chasing a better mood or fitter body.

It’s about honouring your health, consistently, no matter how you feel or look, getting up to move even when you don’t feel well is the commitment that boosts well-being.

Some days movement is running. Other days it’s stretching, dancing, walking, or simply doing a few walking lunges on your way to work.

Exercise can protect us from so much: heart disease, depression, diabetes. But more than that, it keeps us grounded. It gives us something to commit to, even when everything else feels uncertain.

So instead of asking “How can I feel amazing?”
Try asking, “What can I do today for my health, given the circumstances (i.e. work schedule, emotional state)?”

That’s how we can start feeling content about our lives. 🤍 taken in London, United Kingdom by @psyselenozbek

Behaviour change is hard. Not because you’re weak or lacking discipline. Because your brain is wired for comfort, not growth. We are faced with various thoughts that stop us. Some common thought we might have: “I’m not used to this, I will fail, it’s too hard, I don’t have time…”

Yep, been there, thought that 🙃 But what if those thoughts can be a part of the work instead of the barrier?

In Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), we don’t spend our energy trying to fight or change these thoughts. Instead, we bring them into the work. We get curious about them. We notice them and understand that they have a good reason. And then we keep going with them, not despite them.

* You want to meditate but keep thinking, “I’m bad at this.” Of course you are, you haven’t done it before. Set a timer for 2 minutes anyway.
* You’re trying to eat more intuitively and the voice says, “This won’t work.” You acknowledge it and still plate your food with care.
* You’re working on a side project and the thought shows up, “What’s the point?” You nod to it and keep typing.

The goal isn’t to re-write your thoughts. It’s to keep moving in the direction that matters, even when the barriers is there.

💭 Next time one of those familiar but unhelpful thoughts pops up, ask yourself:
Can I bring this into the work with me?
The answer might keep you going. 🤍 by @psyselenozbek

🤗 by @psyselenozbek

🖤 by @psyselenozbek
