HALLOWEEN READING CHALLENGE 🐈‍⬛🦇
Progress report week 3

🧛 Have you noticed any changes in your reading skills? How about in overall reading proficiency?
I think that the fact that this book is meant to be for 1st graders makes it easy to read because the font is big, it has few kanji and very little katakana but I have decided to read more complex texts meant for older people in the future because it is kind of uncomfortable for me to read words in hiragana when I know the kanji for it and it gets to a point when, me not being a beginner in Japanese, I feel like the text doesn’t make sense with so few kanji 😅. I always try to constantly read in Japanese even if it’s short news, texts, or a few manga pages and it has helped me gain more vocabulary and reading speed when compared to most of my Japanese class’ classmates.

🦇 What has surprised you the most about this experience? Has it differed from your initial expectations?
I guess I am most surprised at how annoyed I get with the lack of kanji lol but I’m enjoying the book very much.
I have always thought that reading in your TL is one of the best ways to learn and practice not just vocabulary but also grammar structures and it helps us immerse in our TL even if we are in our home countries so my expectations for this challenge haven’t changed because I’m learning loads of new vocabulary.

💀 With one week remaining, will you be making any last-minute adjustments?
I’ll need to read as much as I can each day and I’m sure I’ll manage to finish the book by the end of the challenge.

HALLOWEEN READING CHALLENGE 🐈‍⬛🦇
Progress report week 2

🧛 What are your thoughts on the story so far? Have you been enjoying it?
The book is composed of several short horror stories, I’ve only finished reading 2 so far but I really liked them and I highly recommend the book because it is easy to read and understand and it is also very entertaining.

🦇 Who are your favorite characters, and why?
I don’t have any favorite characters so far.

💀 Where does your book take place?
Most of the stories from the book are Japanese ghost stories but some others are foreign horror stories.

🎃 What are some new words or phrases you’ve picked up from your book?
I’m learning loads of new onomatopoeias from this book and I’m loving it. For example:
- ひそひそ: in a low voice, in a whisper
- むずむず: to be impatient, to itch, to be itching (to do something), to be eager
- ふらふら: unsteadily, shakily, aimlessly, unconsciously, without thinking
- くるくる: going round and round

HALLOWEEN READING CHALLENGE 🐈‍⬛🦇
Progress report week one

🧛 Now that you’ve settled in, do you feel you need to make any changes to your original reading goal or reading method?
I think that I will follow my original plan and manage just fine to finish reading the book by the end of the month.

🦇 What does a productive reading space look like to you? How do you avoid distractions?
I can read anywhere, I always read in different rooms in my house like my room, the living room, the study, the terrace, etc. I also got used to reading in the car since I was very young. The only things I need to read books in Japanese are my iPhone or iPad to look up words in a dictionary app (Shirabe Jisho is my fav) and for this particular book, I’m just using a kuru toga mechanical pencil to highlight words I don’t know and write their meaning. To avoid distractions I listen to instrumental music like OSTs with noise-canceling headphones.

💀 Describe what this time of the year is like where you live.
In Mexico we celebrate the day of the dead on November 1 and 2, we honor our dead relatives by putting up an altar with their favorite food and drinks and traditional food and candy like pan de muerto and hot chocolate, we also place pictures of them. If you have pictures of pets that passed away you can also place them on the altar and offer something to them as well. But as time has passed by the younger generations also celebrate Halloween by decorating our houses with Halloween decor, kids go treat or tricking and young adults make costume parties with loads of alcohol. I love this time of the year because I love autumn leaves and the chilly weather and I adore everything pumpkin flavored lol.

HALLOWEEN READING CHALLENGE 🐈‍⬛🦇
Day 1
I’m super excited to participate again this year 😄 thank you @ko.studygram for hosting this challenge again

🧛 Introduce your book and why you chose it for this challenge:
For this year's challenge, I will be reading the 10分で読めるこわい話し(1年生) (scary stories that can be read in 10 minutes) book. I chose this book because I wanted to read something scary or related to Halloween, also because it has Japanese horror stories and the kanji in books for kids in the first year of Japanese elementary school are very easy so I won’t have to look up many words in the dictionary and read a bit faster. And the book just came out a while ago so it’s a first edition book.

🦇 What’s your reading goal, and which reading method will you use?
My reading goal is to finish reading the whole book (176 pages) by the end of the challenge which is another reason why I choose this easy book which is meant for kids.
I will use the intensive reading method because I like to fully understand and comprehend what I read.
I usually annotate on my books, I highlight or circle the words I don’t know and write the meaning next to the word. I don’t think I will be writing them down in a notebook or making flashcards.

💀 How many pages (or for how long) do you intend to read per day?
To finish reading the book I intend to read at least 5 pages per day but if I have more time I will try to finish a story in one day.
⠀
🎃 Do you predict any obstacles? How will you overcome them?
I’m currently busy studying for a medical knowledge exam I must take next year and I’m also taking Japanese lessons and sometimes have tons of homework but if I am unable to read one or a few days I’ll make up for it on the days when I do have free time to read, but I think I will manage just fine to finish the book by the time the challenge ends.

🇯🇵 新しい漢字の本と漢字練習ノートを買った、ポケモン漢字練習ノートと私いつも使いノートが違う、方眼紙はより大きいから。私漢字練習が大好き, 覚えるのために漢字は何度も書きます。皆んな、漢字はどうやって勉強しますか。
🇬🇧 I finally bought the original kanji look and learn book and it is super pretty, I only had some photocopies but not the whole book because it is very common for schools in Mexico to sell or provide photocopies of the pages you will be studying each language level but my university stopped selling them and started requesting students to buy original books for all language classes since last year (they don’t even sell the originals now, at least not for Japanese so they are hard to come by). As my lessons move forward the photocopies are running out of pages and I really needed the whole book so I ordered it from a local stationery store that specializes in Japanese goods and sells books and manga as well, they also got me Pokémon kanji practice notebooks, they are different to the ones I usually use (Campus) because the squares are bigger but I really like the fact that they have Pokémon on the covers and they have reading practice with furigana inside on the first and last pages. I love writing kanji over and over to memorize them and it kind of relaxes me lol, how do you guys study and memorize kanji?
¿Ustedes como estudian kanji? by @pua.studies

Christmas Reading Challenge ⛄️❄️🎄

I’m sorry I have taken so long to post this report, I have been very busy and I didn’t have time to write it until now, I hope I can manage to finish the manga by Dec 31st

❄️ Current page: 83/190

❄️ Has your opinion of this book changed since starting it? What about your general attitude toward reading in your TL? I’m really enjoying the manga and my opinion about it hasn’t changed. I’m really enjoying reading in Japanese and I want to read more and longer texts as time passes by, hopefully after finishing the jujutsu kaiser manga volumes I own I will start a book.

❄️ Share your favorite line or quote from the story.

Christmas Reading Challenge ⛄️❄️🎄

❄️ Current page: 43/190

❄️ What are some new words or phrases you’ve picked up from this book?
I have learnt many words from this manga, not just related to curses and specific to the manga but common words too. The ones that repeat the most due to the nature of the manga are the ones I remember more including the kanji.

呪い - のろい - curse, spell, malediction
呪物 - じゅぶつ - the dictionary describes this word as “fetish” but the anime subs and the way the manga in general uses it is “cursed object” because 呪 means spell, curse, charm, malediction and 物 means thing, object, matter.
特級 - とっきゅう - high grade, special grade
死体 - したい - dead body, corpse, cadaver, carcass
封印 - ふういん - seal, to seal
祓う - はらう - to exorcise, to cleanse, to purify
呪術 - じゅじゅつ - magic, sorcery, incantation

❄️ Who are your favourite characters so far? What makes them interesting to you?
My favourite character is Satoru Gojō (Gojō Sensei) he is the coolest character in Jujutsu Kaisen and so far the strongest, but I’m way behind schedule so he is yet to appear in the manga lol. I like most characters, I really like Yūji Itadori the main character, he is funny and he has a strong conviction to get stronger to be able to help and safe people and Megumi Fushigiro is his classmate and he is super strong, even though he is a man his name is Megumi and he hates his father for naming him that, I like his Shikigami (he uses magic to animate animals like dogs, frogs, bunnies, etc. from shadows and uses them to attack curses and defend him and his companions). I think this manga has very good characters who are very likable, I like other characters but they don’t show up in the volume I’m reading lol.

Christmas Reading Challenge ⛄️❄️🎄

❄️ Current page: 25/190

❄️ What do you think about the story so far? Are you excited to keep reading?
I started reading this manga because I am really enjoying the anime and it has become one of my favorites. I’m pretty much at the beginning the story in the manga but I’m really enjoying it so far and I want to keep on reading not just this volume but all of them.

❄️ What’s your favorite time of day to read? Are you an early bird or a night owl?
In general I’m more of a night owl so when it comes to reading I like to do it in the afternoon before having dinner or late at night before going to bed.

Christmas Reading Challenge ⛄️❄️🎄

❄️ Current page: 13/190

❄️ Now that you’ve had a few days to settle in, do you feel you need to adjust your daily reading goals or reviewing methods?
I haven’t been able to read much lately but I will work hard to catch up with my reading goals, I think that if I work hard the days I’m able to read I will manage to finish the manga on time. I’m learning loads of new vocabulary words. I feel like the kanji and kana sizes are kinda small so the furigana is tiny lol but I guess it takes some getting used to and I can always take a picture and zoom the image to be able to see the kanji correctly. I’m currently highlighting or circling the words I don’t know and writing the meaning on the manga but I’m also making a list of all the words in my shirabe jisho app to be able to make a handwritten list later.

❄️ Where does this story take place? The story takes place in Japan in the year 2018, mostly Tokyo but since the story is just beginning the main character is in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture specifically inside the Sugisawa 3rd Municipal Highschool.

Day 1
Christmas Reading Challenge ⛄️❄️🎄

❄️ Introduce your book! What made you choose it for this challenge?
For this challenge I will be reading the jujutsu kaisen (呪術廻戦) manga volume 1. I chose this manga because I’ve been watching the anime this season and it has become one of my favourites so I wanna try to read the mangas in Japanese.

❄️ How many pages do you intend to read per day?
The manga has 190 pages so I will be reading 6 or more pages per day to be able to finish the whole manga by the time the challenge ends.

❄️ Do you plan on documenting new vocabulary or grammar? If so, how will you review them?
I will be highlighting or circling the words I don’t know in the manga and write their meanings, If I have enough time I will write them down in a notebook or in the computer to revise them later and probably make word cards.

🇬🇧Is not much but as people say it’s honest work lol 🤣 (it’s a picture of this week’s Japanese homework), I should start posting more often I usually just post stories. I bought this campus loose leaf grid paper a few weeks ago and I’m loving it, I like the fact that it helps me write my hiragana, katakana and kanji and they can all be the same size (more or less) so my Japanese handwriting can be more easily understood. My Japanese handwriting is kinda small so this graph paper with small squares is super useful for me. But when I’m learning new kanji or reviewing kanji I already know I like to use special notebooks for kanji practice to get the radicals’ proportions and positions right.

Do you guys prefer to write on grid or ruled paper when studying Japanese?
