She got up and pulled her clothes up. Charlotte sat down. ‘The Remains’ is a poetry of place, or, more precisely, of places: contingent, awkward, and unregarded, shaped by how we think about them and how they make us feel. It is also a poetry of particularity, attentive to what is there and what isn’t, to what seems to matter and what doesn’t, discovering in the process that everything does.’ - Tom Jenks ‘The specificity of toilets and toileting with an unblinking eye – from mock academic paper (actual papers also ranked: Izal bad, Cushelle good) and a think piece on Marcel Duchamp disenchantment, to memoir and an unflinching interview with Auntie Margaret. 🎶 … JOAN summer recap … ‘The Discreet Dash’ by Georgina Starr Leaning back again on the chaise longue with something vaguely resembling cheese-dust melting on her tongue, Dora felt like a psychiatric patient about to undergo analysis, she was not at all comfortable with this new role... ‘Hilarious and far more perverse than it first appears, Starr’s surrealist narrative is built around an empty hole, populated with mysterious larvae, esoteric magic and hazy filmic glamour; the unlikely protagonist a listening machine—‘an invisible ear, a huge self-conscious organ hiding in the shadows listening’—who slowly unravels the mystery into increasingly menacing fractals of revelation.’ -Nell Osborne @georgina__starr 💚 by @publishingjoan

🎶… JOAN summer recap … 💙 Terence Dwyer’s iconic 1971 tutorial Composing with Tape Recorders (originally published by Oxford University Press), re-published by JOAN, includes new texts by Sarah Angliss, Irene Revell, John Hughes and a visual afterword by Mandy Ure. ‘An ‘only’ child, I spent hundreds of weekend hours waiting for my parents to awaken, somehow immersed in time-based (home) media, VHS, cassette, early CDs, the devices perhaps stand-ins for the siblings I so longed to play with. For a time, I made my own tape recordings: one morning while the kitchen was still in half-light (too small to draw the curtains, 8 or 9 years old?) I recorded the whole process of making breakfast: beans-on-toast, tea. I recall the very physical challenge of this ambitious orchestration but I was also the narrator, imagining a hybrid format radiophonic cookery show.’ – Irene Revell by @publishingjoan

🎶 … JOAN summer recap … ‘Good Work’, Paul Becker The space around it echoed, deflecting or reflecting sound, she wasn’t sure which. Sometimes at dawn, it was as though the birds were holding a private chorus inside. It had grown so large that as soon as the sun rose the wood around it was instantly permeated with the aroma of sawdust and pine resin. ‘What compels about Good Work is the mix of intimacy and unashamed density. It is truly a many-layered text, filled with encounters, names and shadows both unexpected and pleasing - Klaus Nomi - and others more disquieting. What I enjoyed most was the textual risk-taking. A reclamation of the neo-modernist, post-everything sensibility that has been rare in recent literature, and is most satisfying to find here. 🎶 … JOAN summer recap … ‘Help in Cucumbers’, Sally O’Reilly There were artworks in your face, in the till and at the back of your mind. They were stepped over and veered around, ignored and delighted in, carried about in pockets and under tongues, releasing their minor potency slowly or fizzing up sharply before disappearing. Art was made from leftovers and undercurrents, influxes and overflows; it was functional like the dishwasher and as extravagant as drunkenness. Beer poured from work, and work from beer, and art from beer and work, and work from art, and thought from talk, and talk from thought or beer. Artwork and beerart were indiscernible from celebrations, intermingled with popular secrets; all around was a showy volley of private magics. ‘When our narrator claims, “The pub performed itself beautifully,” she is spot on. 🎶… JOAN summer recap … Catkin Sail by Jona Xhepa In the dream she sees herself turn into a bold type script, while the landscape around her is all in italics. With purpose, as moving through custard which is the dreaming way of movement, she digs a hole underneath the exhibition in the gallery, and begins to travel to find her dead husband. For some reason, the sensors of the dream have convinced her that he has been swallowed by a flower to be rightfully turned into his normal state, drying him into his apostate plant lithograph. Before identifying the flower, she passes through columns on the graveyards and stone circles, more italicized than they would be normally in real life, with parallel scratching on the side of each column, each cluster forming words from an ancient alphabet, vaguely corresponding to letters of the alphabet. ❤️ by @publishingjoan
