My Debut EP ‘Still Swinging’ is out now.

It was a pretty big decision to start this new venture under a new name. The idea came from a growing resentment of the music industry. I became so fixated by numbers and growth that my sense of worth began to fluctuate with them.

I made a conscious decision from the beginning of Pub Singer to step away from playing the Spotify/ industry game, and haven’t promoted them since the start of this project. Yet, we need our music to be accessible. So it needs to live on all of these platforms. Which is the conflict of any artist with a soul.

I put a lot into this EP, and learned a lot about myself and my patterns of sabotage, anxiety, escapism. I did this EP for myself. And I am glad I got this first project over the line. Whether you like the project it or not, it exists. And that is something to be proud of.

With no: label, manager, PR campaigns, radio pluggers etc. , I managed to create something solid, and it is very much down to the amazing people that collaborated with me over the past year.

Massive thanks to @leifmainesounds for producing this project with me. I took songs that I’d written in my room, and we put our heads together for many an hour in the studio to create what has become the beginning of Pub Singer.

Thanks to @jack.layfield and @jackson_payne_ For showing an interest in this Pub Singer project when I had nothing to show for it, but we jumped in a car and went all the way up North to my dads and filmed the video Mining Town.

Thanks to my long time mate and collaborator @nickofford , who has been a massive part of this project.

Anyway, fckin Grammy speech over now. Didn’t feel right to just say EP out now, because I wouldn’t have anything to show without the help from these amazing people.

It’s not easy being an independent artist. Alas, we continue to keep swinging, because what else are we gonna do?

‘Mining Town’; a 16mm short film set in Pub Singer’s old stomping ground of Widnes/St Helens. Directed by Jackson Payne and Jack Layfield.

The song reflects on the little mining town he spent his formative years in with his father. The song explores feelings of anger, sadness, comfort, and isolation. A town that he holds very dear, but longed to leave from a young age.

There’s something wonderfully unpolished and human about it; the kind of music that feels like it could have been written at the bar, then followed you home.

🍂JJ Sterry brings his distinctive solo sound to Strummerville On Sea. Known for his years as vocalist and songwriter with legendary post-punk outfit Gang of Four, Sterry’s solo work takes a very different path, drawing on the English folk revival of the late ’60s and influences including John Martyn, Fairport Convention and Pentangle. Intimate, exploratory and beautifully unclassifiable, his upcoming debut album We Are Your New Friends finds Sterry embracing a more personal and richly textured side of his songwriting.

Three artists. One room. No gimmicks. Just songs, stories, guitars and whatever happens when you put them all in the same place.
