There’s a lot to observe and experience in the fundamental practice by et al. which was first presented at the 2005 Venice Biennale. This is just its second outing. The wall text describes its address to technology as ‘prescient’. Looking at these ‘photo’ components of the work the concept of data centres comes to mind, although I expect the concept of a data centre didn’t then exist. Today I’ve had occasion to think about the skills of helmsmanship and the art of navigating an organisation through turbulent seas/times. I was lucky enough to have an early view of Te Ripo o te Moana @aucklandmuseum that elegantly brings together a ‘whirlpool’ of Māori creativity, contemporary and historic. First up a pair of fantastically carved mid 19th century Arawa pou. A selection of whakatai/ body adornment includes a contemporary clay breast plate by Areta Wilkinson that sits so well with a c1350 serpentine breast plate (lower left) and above that is the fantastic taiari/bracelet of moa bone carved to resemble whale teeth, c1800. Ruination: sometimes big and complex things are just in plain sight. As I was on my morning constitutional thinking about the darn news of the day I came across this installation by local artist @chuckjosephnz I’d been hearing about homelessness and was lamenting about the ruination of so many systems and safeguards. Chuck’s installation was illuminated by winter brightness accompanied by barely double degree temperatures at that moment. #nzceramics #ruination #winterhomelessness taken in EDGE CITY by @puginesque

Don’t tell me this is a crap image, I know. A revelation to encounter Eléna Gee’s 1987 Boxed Set (best to view it horizontally)on exhibition (under glass) @aucklandartgallery a museum that doesn’t usually exhibit contemporary jewellery. I’d first seen similar works in the 80s and was confused, jewellery made of the simplest natural elements presented in containers made of discarded car engine parts. 40 years on they seem to me prescient, anticipating the notion of the Anthropocene, where human activity is the dominant influence on nature. #anthropocene #nzcontemporaryjewellery #elénagee #40yearson taken in Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki by @puginesque
