Happy Juneteenth!! What an honor and privilege to be selected as Queen of Juneteenth for my city, New Bern! To whom much is given, much is required. I have the responsibility to speak truth, empower, and advocate. It's who I am, so...

This is just one day to acknowledge because it represents freedom. Many died so we can walk in "freedom". However, we MUST be active and engaged 365 days a year because there is much more love, knowledge, wisdom, and movement needed for us ALL to truly walk in freedom. Disciple, mentor, witness, and advocate because there is power in our voices, our presence, and where we spend our resources.

Jesus calls us to be bold, courageous, disciplined, accountable, and to speak truth in love.

Are you making a difference?

Are you an ally or are you comfortable living in bondage, or for some, privilege?

Are you so religious that you're no humanely good?

How are you bearing the cross to be more like Jesus and setting captives free?

How will your dash be remembered?

I heard a powerful message this morning before service and it was, "You don't know what it took for me to get here." I don't cry often, perhaps because I've shed so many tears in the past, but the message was so personal. Today is my uncle's first birthday in heaven. I don't get to call him or cook him a birthday dinner this year. It was an honor to celebrate him because he was the only dad I had most of my life and he deserved it. It sucks when you lose the one person in your family that you KNOW loves you unconditionally, protects you, and you never had to question either.

It's also the anniversary of my dad's death. We had just developed a consistent relationship almost a year before the accident. Our relationship was truly an example of God's grace, mercy, restoration, and reconciliation.

So many different emotions today... by @pullmylocs__

We are adjusting our lives to fit this reality:
To be elderly is to suffer.
To be disabled is to suffer.
To be a woman is to suffer.
To be a veteran is to suffer.
To be a single parent is to suffer.
To be a person of color is to suffer.
To be in a low income bracket is to suffer.
To be in the middle income bracket is to suffer.
To struggle with trauma and mental health is to suffer.
To be a caretaker of a special needs person is to suffer.

Just because it's common doesn't make it normal and we need to acknowledge the difference between the two.

If it impacts some it impacts us all. Why are we still suffering when Jesus paid it all?

Systemic racism, systemic poverty, and systematic inequality are real barriers that can only be changed when we love and see each other as ONE family.

Our silence only breeds pain. Transparency can heal. Testimonies can create unity and hope and empower us to unite. Not conform, but unite.

Accept that we are not always strong individually. We are human. We are tender. Consistent fight mode is exhausting. Persevering through connection, through honesty, through vulnerability, through healthy dialogue can influence change and generations.

What would it look like for us to truly see each other as ONE family that's not divided by color, sex, orientation, politics, beliefs, economic class, and identity? I'm by no means saying accept sin or poor behavior. I'm saying to love and care about the person Jesus created. I'm saying you can love, give grace, hold accountable, and not reaffirm sin. Those things can co-exist and glory be to God because WE ALL fall short of living a perfect life.

How would the world change if we:
-truly forgive even when we don't get an apology?
-do the work to heal?
don't gossip and safely allow others to share their story?
-truly love one another as Jesus commands?

Jesus dying on the cross wasn't just for one group of people, it was for ALL people to create a multiethnic family in Him.

It's dangerous for us to normalize painful lived realities. Be intentional in the pursuit of answers, advocacy, practical change, & healthy community. by @pullmylocs__

I belong to a church that believes in honor and we express that honor. I've actually been wanting to write this post since I flew to Ohio on August 9th, for my little brother's, Xavier, 18 birthday and graduation party. It had been 8 years since I'd seen him and Lord willing I'm never letting that much time go by again.

His mom, Brittany, planned, decorated, and cooked for his birthday. She even had a DJ! She TRULY out did herself. I was not expecting for it to be a full on experience, but my goodness! Now most people may think that's what a lot of parents do and this is where honor genuinely comes in.

Brittany didn't have any biological kids at the time she and my dad separated. However, they remained friends and she co-parented with my dad. My dad unexpectedly passed from a work accident when my brother was little. Brittany stepped up when she was not obligated to because of love. Even after she had her youngest son, there was no doubt in my mind that she wouldn't take good care of my brother.

Although Brittany's a gangsta‼️😩, being a mom is HARD! There are struggles some moms never talk about and the only thing keeping them is their child. Most of the time them little crumb snatchers aren't even grateful or realize the sacrifices made. Brittany chose to carry this cross. Every day she made a decision to love him, raise him, advocate for him, and give him what she could. We don't always get it right and that's where grace comes in. Her love and their hard work resulted in him graduating high school and buying his first car! Look at God!

I'm so grateful for Brittany and her entire family who have loved him since he was a baby! I honor you Brittany and I will forever love you for taking care of my little brother. 🤍🤍🤍 by @pullmylocs__

I belong to a church that believes in honor and we express that honor. The Lord just put it in my heart to take this week to honor people.

While listening to the song, I Trust in God, this morning I reflected on the seasons that song has encouraged me through and I want to honor Lisa So Bless. Lisa is my mom's best friend and one of Darius' Godmothers. Lisa has stuck by my mom side for over 30 years! They have each other back through mountain top experiences and in the valley.

I want to honor Lisa because in the valley she was there for my mom. It's easy to be present when things are going well. But when you need someone to help pay a bill, take you to the doctor, drive you to a different state, sit with you in the hospital you'll find that's when people fade away. Lisa didn't just sit with my mom in the hospital, Lisa would work long shifts on her feet and come straight to the hospital with her work clothes on and STAY with my mom in the hospital. She was her earthly guardian. She made sure she had the oxygen she needed to survive! I'm talking about a LIFE friend.

Lisa didn't complain not once. We partnered together and we figured it out. Lisa stood beside me while my mom received a dangerous procedure. We stood outside that room praying the whole time. When my legs were too weak to move, Lisa moved! She asked questions and got the status updates. When Darius had his accident, Lisa was one of the first people called. I knew once I told my mom that she would need Lisa. After a five hour drive from NC, we walked into the trauma area and Lisa was right there waiting for my mom. Shoot Lisa was there when Darius was born.

We've cried together and we've rejoiced together. Anyone who knows my mom Geraldine Savage, 😫 she can be a piece of work 🤣. But God! He gave her a best friend that could handle her, support her, love her, and advocate for her.

I'm so grateful for you Lisa and all the years you've remained faithful to a lunatic 🤣. Ok ok scratch that. I'm so grateful for you Lisa and all the years you've remained faithful, patient, and loving to a Savage. We can be a tough bunch of women, but we serve a God who has put people in our lives that we ne by @pullmylocs__
