Lab Notes is 1 year old today! 👩🏻‍🔬🎶📝🥳 It doesn’t feel that long ago, though. Perhaps because I’m still feeling pretty much the same. Making music helped me see both beauty and ugliness of this world and society in much sharper way. This special release will have some sort of echo on my next albums too because I intend to remake some tracks from the original demo “Lab Notes”. The music DNA which can’t be erased 🎶🧬 My oceanic gratitude to the team which made this release possible: @stateofbass_ Martin @st8ofbass who believed in me from the very start 💙; production team⚡️: Xentinel / Kevin @chain_complex / Daniel @kiffiethedreamer / Timo @montage.collective ; production + mastering 🌟: Sean @ghost_elektron ; artwork design Louise Morrell The album of the open heart and thoughts: https://pulselab.bandcamp.com/album/lab-notes #electronicmusic #electronica #electropop #electroclash #debutalbum #socialcommentary #protest #love #finland #turku #uk #southampton #norwich #ireland #cork #australia #adelaide by @pulselabinfo

What it feels like to be on the pulse of my music? I guess I should know better than anyone else. It would be fair to label my solo work as electronic, mostly electropop. But every now and again, there is something different. In my solo work it’s definitely “Cosmic Roses”, a triphop space ballad. I think my producer Xentinel was drawing some inspiration from Massive Attack. I like some triphop myself, my first introduction to triphop was Morcheeba

My first music collaboration happened with the UK coldwave artist truthscan. Gary was looking for other artists to reimagine his song “Filter Bubble”, and I was one of them. I recommend to visit truthscan Bandcamp page to find more about his music. I really like that Gary writes about modern topics, with a sharp social commentary and wit

I’ve done a few songs with the elements of spoken word. Sometimes the rhythm dictates narrating rather than singing. “Permafrost” is the first collaborative track I did with Wavewulf, the electronic music composer from the USA. This is a fairly experimental piece of music, but I hope I did it enough justice. Funnily enough, the lyrics finally came to me after I exposed myself to -30 degrees temperature

“Pagan Landscape” with the UK artist and saxophone virtuoso Richard Davies is another example of spoken word on my part. Sometimes collaborators give me freedom to write my own lyrics or suggest lyrical ideas. But in this case the words were written by Richard, and I liked them so much that I didn’t feel like I would want to add anything extra

I’ve done few covers too, and one of them was “Mr Crowley” originally performed by Ozzy Osbourne. I worked with Ulf from Projekt Ich on a bilingual track before, and again doing a cover for originally metal song sounded like something outside of my creative comfort zone. I surprised myself yet again :)

Of course, there are other collaborative tracks I am proud of, but I also have to wrap up…for now. You can find all these fine artists I mentioned on Bandcamp and dive deeper into their catalogue 🌊 🎶 #electronic #triphop #spokenword #experimental #collaboration taken in Sirius Star by @pulselabinfo

Song number two on the sampler is “Perfect Twin”. By twin, I don’t mean a sibling who was born at the same time as “you” nor it’s some profound spiritual feeling of having a soulmate. This is about two versions of one person: the one that faces actual reality and the other one who constructs it online.

It may feel like we have more control of our virtual image with what we allow the others to see. Filters, “curated content”, the chase for perfection and approval in likes. Social media can remind of casino sometimes. It’s a gamble, which works for some, but not necessarily all the time. Of course, it can also be addictive and damaging for a mental and emotional health.

My song doesn’t judge people who seek validation online. As an artist, I do it too. And it’s not always easy to keep feeding the algorithm machine, especially if trends are not quite aligned with your own vision. We live in lonely times, when many are rather be glued to a phone screen than making an eye contact with another human being. So why should it come as a surprise in this digital age that in order to try and connect we are forced to invest in online presence? The best things still happen offline. And they can’t be edited to be flawless, but, at least, they are real #electronicmusic #nudisco #socialcommentary #socialmedia #vinylgram taken in Metaverse by @pulselabinfo

Some “slide show” from my last week trip to Vienna:

I stayed in this pod, which had a ceiling light mode immersing the whole space into a cosmic blue atmosphere. It looks pretty strikingly blue on the photo, but in fact, it’s way less intense. I could almost imagine myself being in one of those futuristic movies, like “The Fifth Element”. I say almost, because I had been wiped out energetically most of the days 😵‍💫 If you ever wiling to experience something like this, the branch of those hostels is called Space Home Apartment #spacepod #cosmicblue #helloplanetearth #whereareyou #vienna

I like good graffiti, so if I spot one, I take a photo. The kind of art that is exposed so vulnerably in public and often gets vandalized. You never know if you see it next time for sure. And also with my rare visits to Austria, the chances are even more increased. However, I do hope that this graffiti of Gustav Klimt will get to exist as long as possible #graffiti #gustavklimt #summerinautumn #vienna #austria

Another graffiti that I discovered due to a detour. I have to say that my Finnish mobile operator decided to abandon me for the most of my stay in Austria, so I had to rely on a public Wi-Fi and offline maps. Therefore it led to occasional detours. Mozart and the Skip, an unlikely pairing, but here you go #mozart #graffiti #detour #discovery #vienna

One of many paintings that I liked at @albertinamuseum exhibitions. This one is called “Rowers” (Natalia Goncharova). Maybe I am biased because of the fusion of my favourite colours, maybe because sometimes I feel like I navigate life in rough waters. But if you’re a lover of art, Albertina will surely have lots to offer for your eyes and mind, and sometimes the heart will react too 🖼️ #albertinamuseum #vienna #austria #cubofuturism #artexhibition

Back in a day, I went to @zotterschokolade factory when I was on my Erasmus exchange. For someone like me, it was a paradise :D They allowed us to taste cocoa beans, mini chocolate fountains, pieces of different chocolates and that amazing drinking chocolate. Can you tell I am a fan…🍫#zotter #austria #chocolate #fairtrade #concept

Due to some technical glitches, I had to reupload this reel and rewrite the caption. Today is the second autumn edition of Bandcamp Friday 🎶🍁 In the first video you are seeing the painting “Roses” originally created by Carl Moll. In this case it’s the copy my Mum painted during her art therapy session 🎨 In the second photo is the original Carl Moll with his “Calming Pond”, which I saw in Albertina Museum in Vienna. The picture felt alive and calming, indeed

My Mum picked up a suitable soundtrack to demonstrate her painting to me too :) “Cosmic Roses” was one of the first two tracks I released back in 2021 and is the part of the Lab Notes sonic journey. For some people it’s one of my most emotional vocals. So today you can support “Lab Notes” at the best rate for me and State of Bass @stateless_bass Some CD copies are still left for those who prefer a physical media. If you can support any artist today (not necessarily me), it will make their day much brighter 🌹 #electronic #electropop #electroclash #triphop #bandcampfriday taken in Disco Fever by @pulselabinfo

Sometimes when doing a live version of a song I add extra bits here and there. I think when I work on official versions, I may be too focused to get them as good as possible, so other ideas only appear after I have had some “rest” from a track. In the case of “Dan, Do You Really Try the Best You Can?!”, I continue banana theme a bit longer :D

I did mention it already that inspiration for this song came from Daniel Elk’s tweet about loving bananas on his pizza. Apparently it’s not an unusual choice in Sweden. I haven’t tried it myself, so I can’t comment which side I am on (similar to yes/no pineapple pizza teams).

Even if I present it in a bit silly way, the issue is serious, of course. Streaming algorithms are said to be one of the reasons why modern songs are made shorter, with intro made to hook you up straight away, often with no bridge in a song structure. Now the algorithm is not a person, so it’s a different experience as when a listener discovers music through a radio show or a DJ set. Yes, you can switch off radio or change a radio wave, or treat a DJ with their picks as a background sound. But the algorithm simply calculates what might appeal to you based on your initial search and previous listening history. And normally suggested artists have over thousand and more monthly listeners. I won’t go into talking about how some numbers are manipulated. It’s an open secret, and it’s done not only by independent artists trying to be heard, but also by more popular acts. They are forced to do so to play the game.

The best way to support artists is to buy their music on Bandcamp if they are registered there. Or through iTunes Store and Amazon Music. Preferably in a physical format. To go and see them live. To get their merch. Thousands of monthly listeners on Spotify sadly don’t even cover a rent bill for many artists. So, if you really like an artist, don’t just stream them on Spotify. P.S. I dug out my old Swedish sport scarf, and in this reel it represents the suffocation that Elk causes to artists with his policies #electronicmusic #antispotify #supportartists #alternativeways #aroundtheworld taken in Spotify HQ Urban Escape by @pulselabinfo

The opening track on the vinyl sampler is “Dan, Do You Really Try the Best You Can?!” Just to think that back in a day I actually wrote for my university paper that Spotify would be a future for artists to be discovered and got fairly paid (that’s when D.Elk promised one dollar per stream). I doubt he ever had the best interests of artists in mind. Just like people behind Suno now, which even is a greater evil than Spotify.

So even though it’s quite a light song in terms of music, the message on the other hand is sharp. Just before posting this, I saw the video of anti-AI activist protesting at a Canva conference where they were showcasing their new AI tools. Of course, she was escorted away pretty fast, but it was filmed, so her message, even if not at full, was heard. Sometimes I wonder why artists don’t protest outside of the Spotify head office. At least, those who are based in Stockholm. Perhaps they don’t believe that it would have any real impact.

I know it’s pointless to reason with people like Elk, as he thinks in a financial format only and doesn’t care that his company politics damage artists’ livelihood. But we can still express our disagreement. Through our music, public statements, and maybe who knows one day a protest outside of his office. And yes, I know that for some labels and industry professionals it’s “better” to support Spotify or be diplomatically neutral about it. Well, I can’t pretend that I like what Elk does, and it’s a shame that our “popularity value” for some based on our Spotify monthly numbers. Which can be faked, as you might know. And the very labels do it too, ironically. So do you believe a number or music you hear? #electronicmusic #vinyl #sampler #victrola #spotify taken in Spotify HQ Urban Escape by @pulselabinfo

Flashback Wednesday: from October 2022 to Sparkstember 2026. Timo @montage.collective tends to come up with conceptual releases, and one of them was two volume project “Androgyny”. The idea was to take original songs performed by the opposite gender and do your own version. 2022 was the year when I first saw Sparks live, and they got me buzzing :D Timo had been a fan for many years, so the choice was naturally approved.

“Gratuitous Sax & Senseless Violins” remains my most favourite record by Sparks. The one that likely got me into them plus their incredible live show, of course. I went with “Now That I Own the BBC”, as I like a chaotic message in this song. The music sounds lighthearted, but there is some element of amusing panic as well :D

I asked my friend Dora to pose as a second half of our “duo” for the promo shoot. Obviously it would be too much to expect she would wear a moustache as well 🥸 I invested a bit more going with unisex haircut, which would be popular in the mid 90s.

Since then I haven’t had a chance to see Sparks live anymore, but Timo actually beats me in that with 1-2. Australia seems to be luckier with Brothers Maels’ visits. And wouldn’t it be a great thing if they actually owned the BBC? 📻📺 #sparkstember #gratuitoussaxandsenselessviolins #cover #nowthatiownthebbc #androgyny taken in BBC Salford by @pulselabinfo

I was going to do a Sunday vinyl snippet play today, but these last few days “impressed” me with the 80s trend, so I decided to make this post instead. I had a fascination with the 80s myself. It’s a bit weaker now, as I think at the moment I am in my 70s disco era appreciation. However, if I wanted to have the elements of the 80s fashion style, I would rather try to experiment myself. I used my imagination to create this image, not generic ideas of the machine. Ok, this photo is from 2021, but I wouldn’t want ChatGPT to create something now that never existed in the first place.

Why not to ask some talented artist to paint how they would see you in the 80s style? Is it really better instead to feed the machine with your personal pictures that will be used for training? And drinking water it took to spit those images…Whilst there are people in the world who don’t have a regular access to one of the most essential resources for living.

If there was reasoning before “it’s not gonna happen in my lifetime”, well, know there is a prognosis that AI might destroy the humankind in 10 years time. More and more data centres are being build, sadly even Finland became a financial target by Google. People developing AI admit themselves that they have no idea what really lies beyond, and yet their greed pushes them for a further destruction.

I know it’s not an easy read for Sunday, but ChatGPT isn’t a good thing. It damages the planet, it damages a critical / analytical thinking and relationships too. We lived without it for years, why now it had to become our entertainment / friend / therapist and even a romantic interest? And at what cost. Let’s see where we are in 10 years from now on…

P.S. There are examples of the 80s trend, when people showed their actual photos from the era or when younger generations dressed up to look like they could be in the 80s. Real experience or effort always beats fantasy in the end #80sstyle #noai #realexperience #enviromentalawareness #thinkbeforeyouact taken in Back to the Future by @pulselabinfo

The story was old, and the story was true. Maxx Silver had been feeling so blue inside that he turned blue outside in the video. Just for a bit, but still. As his “therapist”, I can’t disclose all the details, but the recommended treatment worked not just for him, but for me too.

Obviously electro-cution and Paul’s symbolic axing of sorrow couldn’t be achieved without the power of music. In this case it was electronic music, which you can listen to and, if you wish to, dance to.

Now that four years went by, I am revisiting the case, and I think that Maxx Silver is doing significantly better. In fact, he isn’t just consuming music as a listener, but actively producing new releases as an artist too. One of them “Arcipelago - Il viaggio (The Journey)” is scheduled to be released later this month (26/09), and there should be a Bandcamp listening party at 8 pm UK time this Friday.

The video we made back then is a bit in a lockdown format, “remote consultation”, even though it was done post-lockdown. The last still is from completely another video. “Tonnes of Attraction” by Vacuum, in which Mattias Lindblom gets executed because of…I actually don’t know why. Maybe it’s a bit like the last scene in the movie “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer”, but less extreme. Anyway, both videos are on YouTube, you can make your own assumptions and conclusions 🎥💭 #electronicmusic #edm #musictherapy #fun #silly taken in Mental Asylum by @pulselabinfo
