Happy 1st Heavenly Birthday, Susan. 🎂🎈 Today, for the first time in a long while, you're celebrating your birthday with Mama and Daddy, Grandma and Grandpa, and Nanny. Birthdays are good things here on earth; I can't begin to imagine how grand they are in Heaven. Thinking of you today and remembering all of the good times we had while you were here with us. I love this day. I love everything about this day. Outside it's overcast and drizzly with a high in the upper 60's. Inside it's snug and cozy. I'm on the couch under a soft throw with a stack of books from which to pick my next read for spooky season. Across the street the subtle hints of color tingeing the leaves of the trees in our neighbor's yard are decidedly more pronounced today, and it's actually beginning to look like fall. Memories of a life well lived. Yesterday we made the drive to Gastonia, North Carolina for our sister, Susan's, visitation and memorial service. There were laughter and tears. There were some very familiar and dearly loved faces we hadn't seen in years, and there were some new faces who instantly became friends upon our meeting them. Susan and Jeff's pastor spoke about the warm, welcoming, kind soul our sister was. Our nephew, Jonah, gave a touching eulogy of the side of my sister that he will remember--the mama who always supported him, loved him, and waited up for him on the nights he had to work late. After the service, we all moved outside for the Trinity dove release. I had never seen one done before; but now that I've seen it, I want one done at my funeral. They had a cage with three white doves and another cage with a single white dove. The three doves represented the Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The single dove represented Susan. The three doves were released first. They flew away; then the single dove was released. Symbolic of the Rapture, the three white doves came back and met the single dove in the air and they all flew home together. Susan's twin granddaughters, Hollie and Hadleigh were excited to be able to participate by opening the cages to release the doves. It was so beautiful, and there wasn't a dry eye among us after witnessing the ceremony. Susan would have loved it.
Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers, messages, and comments. They have buoyed my soul and brought me comfort and peace over the past week. This has been one of the hardest trials I have ever come through. Losing a sibling just hits different...maybe because they are closer to our own age; but God is so, so good. God is STILL good; and in times like these He makes His Presence felt in so many ways. I have surely felt His love this week through all of you. 🌹 by @pumpkinsandcrows

Going through family photographs this morning to send to my niece for a slideshow to be shown at Susan's visitation on Saturday evening. For four years, Susan was the only child. Then, for another four years, it was just Susan and me. Four years after I was born, our sister, Laura came along, and four years after Laura, our brother, Percy, whom we call Smitty, was born. I especially love the picture of Susan standing at the chalkboard (she wanted to be a teacher from an early age and went on to fulfill that goal) and the picture of we three girls sitting on the bed (if you look closely, you'll see that Susan was hamming it up with a couple of Q-tips sticking out of her ears). So many wonderful memories of the fun we had when we were kids... by @pumpkinsandcrows

I kept hoping we would have some cooler, more fall-feeling weather before I started posting photos of our autumn decor. Unfortunately, we have now reached mid-September, and we're still experiencing summer heat here in Virginia.
