I have been one of the biggest admirer and advocate of the beautiful Sahyadris that become magical every monsoon and call it a blessing for the people living in Maharashtra to access such beauty so close to our homes.
It’s truly heartbreaking to see the audacity of some people to think dumping plastic is okay to do. Mind boggling to comprehend that taking an empty bottle is so heavy that it’s okay to dump it anywhere we please. Even tho there is a dustbin, how much common sense is required to even think it’s okay to leave it at the end of a hike and putting the responsibility on someone else (the local villagers) to carry our waste back home. Pune being a city struggles with garbage cleanup. How in world is a village, deep in the ghats, have better garbage collection system?! This is not a restaurant, this is not a city. The winds are so strong there. Everyday the bottles spreads with the wind to the entire valley which is inaccessible by humans, who’s gonna pickup that trash? There’s tonnes of garbage left back on the way too. Raincoats, shoes, slippers, wrappers, packets of chips and whatnot. NOBODY IS PICKING THOSE UP.
Your 50rupees entry charge doesn’t give you the authority to trash the nature!!

I know this is not an individual occurrence and most of the hiking/scenic spots struggle with the same issue. We need solutions. I talked to the locals at the entry gate but they seemed like they’ve accepted it as well and didn’t care much. If anyone has contacts to the municipalities or are a local please ask them to prohibit plastic bottles/single use plastics at the entry itself. I don’t know what else to do tbh. But if you’re someone who can help if implementing better regulations, please let us know.

🚨 Why Are Leopard Sightings Increasing in Pune?
In the last few months, many areas in Pune from Bavdhan and Hinjawadi to Lohegaon and Wagholi have reported repeated leopard sightings.

But what is the REAL reason behind this sudden rise?

Here’s a simple explanation 👇

🌳 1. Rapid urbanisation
Pune is expanding faster than ever. As new buildings replace green zones, forest patches around the city are shrinking. With less habitat available, leopards are forced to move closer to human areas.

🌾 2. Sugarcane fields acting like ‘new forests’
Dense sugarcane farms around Pune provide perfect hiding spots for leopards. These fields are cool, safe, and have water making them ideal for raising cubs.

🐕 3. Easy prey near suburbs
Stray dogs, poultry, and livestock around city outskirts offer an easy food source. This naturally attracts leopards towards human settlements.

📸 4. More cameras = More sightings
CCTV cameras, mobile phones, and doorbell cams capture wildlife more frequently today. Many sightings that earlier went unnoticed are now recorded instantly.

🏡 5. Human–wildlife overlap
As Pune spreads outward, our homes are getting closer to natural wildlife corridors. This overlap increases chances of encounters.

⚠️ Important: This doesn’t mean the number of leopards is rising dramatically, it means we are entering their space.
