My POV
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Delighted to finally announce the global release of my book ‘Punk Orientalism: The Art of Rebellion’ (Black Dog Press, London) on October 25, 2022, in bookstores & online. Order your copy at www.blackdogonline.com (UK).

This experimental & fractured book of artistic, intellectual & cultural materials is tacitly punk in its refusal. To borrow from punk theorist Cyrus Shahan, Punk Orientalism is “[n]ot a story of the oppressed, marginalized or persecuted minorities, a punk narrative reveals instead an unwritten history of the middle”.

Thank you to all the artists, thought partners, peers, galleries, institutions & sponsors. This book celebrates reciprocal cultural labor with 31 dynamic artists I’ve had the pleasure of working with (2005-2021) as a contemporary art curator & writer dedicated to researching art from post-Soviet Central Asia & the Caucasus – the spaces and places that were culturally & historically associated with the former Soviet Union, & expanding my research to include the Arab world, Iran & Turkey, investigating complex relationships with the USSR during & after the Cold War. Nothing but admiration for this fascinating critical mass of artists. I salute you all!

The Center of Contemporary Arts Tashkent is now open! 6 years in the making, the building is a flagship project of the Uzbekistan Art & Development Foundation spearheaded by our very own Gayane Umerova & expertly designed by Studio KO to present a blueprint for adaptive reuse architecture in Central Asia.

All are welcome to visit the CCA’s first exhibition “Hikmah,” (the traditional Uzbek word for wisdom) which is thematically inspired by the principles of the 14th century Naqshabandi Sufi Order, indigenous to ancient Uzbekistan.

Manifesting a dialogue between material intelligence, sculpture & the specificity of site,
the exhibition brings into being a dialogue between art & architecture & features the work of: Ali Cherri, Nadia Kaabi-Linke, Kimsooja, Tarik Kiswanson, Vladimir Pan, Shokhrukh Rakhimov, Bakhtiyar Saipov, Daribay Saipov, Muhannad Shono, & Nari Ward.

Throughout the exhibition art & ideas rooted in embodied wisdom cross-circulate around a multi-layered building that has witnessed various social, political & cultural shifts.

My sincere gratitude to all the artists, Gayane & especially the team of Studio KO: I couldn’t have dreamed of better thought partners.

I dedicate this exhibition to my mother the true embodiment of hikmah. ❤️🇺🇿🇦🇫🇹🇲

Punk Orientalism Studio & Babi Badalov at Asia NOW 2026

Asia NOW is proud to host Punk Orientalism Studio, founded in New York by Dr Sara Raza, an award-winning international curator, art historian and author, and Chief Curator of the Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA), Tashkent. For its 12th edition, Asia NOW presents I Open My Mouth and Speak Art, a special project by Punk Orientalism Studio in collaboration with Paris-based artist Babi Badalov. Taking Badalov’s radical exploration of alphabets, hybrid languages and visual poetry as its point of departure, the project transforms the traditional art fair booth into an interdisciplinary salon for artistic and intellectual exchange. Bringing together artists, architects, curators, writers, poets and musicians, the programme explores migration, displacement, translation, resistance and belonging through conversations, poetry, performance, publishing, sound and live interventions.

With contributions from Babi Badalov, Kimsooja, Marco Scotini, Daniel Jonas Roche, Feda Wardak, Azad Asifovich, Larena Amin, Berirouche Feddal and Attia Shiraz, among others, the salon creates a dynamic space for dialogue across artistic disciplines, languages and cultural geographies.

The second commission for the chapter “I Swear I Saw That” @mathafmodern is Babi Badalov’s (@babibadalov) monumental installation “Text Still” (2024). I invited Babi to create a collage that would wrap Mathaf’s facade with his text-text based works stitching together different scripts that investigate the Orient from an Occidental perspective & vice versa. Elaborating on Orientalism & language this piece questions the assumed superiority of language & cultures.

Seeing Flying Carpets for the first time at CCA Tashkent.
My first time installing a work in Uzbekistan, at the Centre for Contemporary Arts Tashkent @cca_tashkent for its inaugural exhibition, Hikmah, curated by @punkorientalism
The 1912 tram depot, restored by @studioko , and Flying Carpets seem made for each other. Sara Raza placed the work above a staircase, and the stairs become a bridge. As you climb, the work slowly appears. When I made that movement for the first time, the work was alive because of the light.
Flying Carpets (2011) traces the exact outlines of the blankets street vendors laid out on Venice's Ponte del Sepolcro. The steel reflects light like water, recalling Venice's bridges and the Mediterranean that many of these men crossed. In Tashkent, visitors walk toward it as if stepping onto that bridge: an approach without arrival.
Installing the work in Uzbekistan anchored it in the Central Asian context. I realised how much Soviet constructivism has inspired me, through the societal past that Ukraine and Uzbekistan share. And the title Flying Carpets suddenly made total sense. The Orient I was recalling in the work, the exchange between East and Far East, was all there: in the place, the works, the exhibition title.
In my interview in BOSMA Vol. 2, the art collectable published by @bosma.edition and the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation @acdfuz , I explore the print as a marker of fact, indexical art, and what we have learned to overlook.
Flying Carpets is on loan from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, through the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative @ubsglobalart Heartfelt thanks to @saida_mirziyoyeva , @gayane_umerova , @marietwestermann , @erickmunari , and the art-handling team.
Bringing Flying Carpets to Tashkent took two institutions working together. Thank you @guggenheim and @cca_tashkent for making it part of this historic opening. I am looking forward to crossing paths again soon with @cca_tashkent, @acdfuz and @guggenheim

Olivier Marty, co-founder of the Paris-based architecture firm Studio KO (@studioko), specializes in giving historic structures a considered second life. His latest project, the Centre for Contemporary Arts Tashkent (CCA Tashkent, @cca_tashkent), does just that for the 1912 tram depot and diesel station in the heart of Uzbekistan’s capital, transforming it into the country’s first permanent institution dedicated to contemporary art.

Working with partner Karl Fournier, Marty chose to preserve, rather than overwrite, the building’s character. Ahead of CCA Tashkent’s public opening, Marty spoke with ArtAsiaPacific about the thinking behind the transformation, and what it means for contemporary art in Central Asia.

The third and final day focused on materiality and the ways materials can carry history, memory and knowledge. The intensive concluded with the artist in-conversation ‘Materiality, Knowledge and Hikmah’, bringing together artist Shokhrukh Rakhimov and Dr Sara Raza to discuss his artistic practice, his contribution to ‘Hikmah’, and the relationship between materiality, spirituality and wisdom.

As part of the exhibition “Hikmah” @cca_tashkent, Kimsooja’s (@studiokimsooja) installation “Archive of Mind” (2016-) occupies the entire lower level of the diesel station. This site-specific installation builds up with audience participation & explores collective embodied wisdom that resides between the mind & the hand.

Each participant is invited to create a sphere with clay, this becomes a gestures by which embodied, tacit knowledge is cultivated. The result over time is a forensic archival imprint of a collective series of minds.

Instructions for the work:

1. Take a small piece of clay from the clay table
2. Take a seat at the table
3. Start to roll the clay between your palms to create a three dimensional sphere
4. Place the sphere on the table for the clay to dry.
5. Clean your hands with the available wipes.
