Stephen Brooks meets Cacao -Theobroma cacao, inside the tropical rainforest zone of Kew’s Princess of Wales Conservatory.

This plant is extra special to me. Cacao brings together so much of my journey. From studying medicinal chemistry and ethnobotany to exploring sacred plant traditions and developing regenerative agroforestry systems in Kenya.

Native to the rainforests of Central and South America, cacao has nourished cultures for thousands of years. Its seeds have been used in sacred drinks, as medicine, as currency and, eventually, to create the chocolate enjoyed across the world today.

Standing beside the cacao at Kew feels like meeting an old teacher—one that connects chemistry, culture, forests and the future of regenerative agriculture.

Meeting one of Kew Gardens’ five Old Lions with Stephen Brooks, his first encounter with this remarkable tree. 🌳💛

This magnificent Ginkgo biloba was planted in 1762, just three years after Princess Augusta established the original botanic garden at Kew. One of the earliest ginkgos planted in Britain, it has witnessed more than 260 years of history.

But its family story reaches back much further. Ginkgo biloba is the last surviving species of the Ginkgoaceae family, the remaining branch of an ancient tree lineage whose ancestors existed before the dinosaurs. 🌿

Look closely at its leaves. Their distinctive fan shape, often divided into two lobes, and delicate, repeatedly forking veins make them unlike those of any other living seed plant. Fossil leaves dating back more than 200 million years look remarkably similar to those growing today.

This male tree also had a female branch grafted onto it, allowing that branch to produce seeds with a fleshy outer covering.

Sharing this first meeting with Stephen made it extra special. A moment beneath an Old Lion, connecting Kew’s beginnings with the deep history of life on Earth. 💛

Stephen Brooks meets one of Kew Gardens’ legendary five Old Lions 🌳

This remarkable black locust, Robinia pseudoacacia, was planted in 1762 as part of Princess Augusta’s original arboretum. More than 260 years later, it remains standing near the Orangery, its ancient trunk supported by iron bands.

A living witness to the earliest years of Kew and centuries of botanical history. 🌿✨

Stephen Brooks meets the magnificent monkey puzzle tree at Kew Gardens 🌳

This extraordinary species belongs to an ancient lineage stretching back around 200 million years to the age of the dinosaurs. Native to Chile and Argentina, it has survived profound changes on Earth, yet today it is endangered in the wild.

A guardian of the forest standing beside one of our planet’s great living connections to the past. 🌿✨

Greetings!!
I just returned from my twenty-second time going to Burning Man. And I have to admit, every time, I receive so many important downloads.
One thing that felt especially sweet this year: I went with my father, Norman. It was his nineteenth time at Burning Man, and it is such a special time for us to share together out there. I noticed how much it brings up for people who see us out there together. It makes people feel like, wow, I wish so much I could bring my parents to Burning Man. I think what they really mean is they wish they could include their parents, and their families, into their alternative worlds. I have so much to say on that topic, but I’ll save it for another time. The most important lesson that keeps coming to me out at Black Rock City is the deep desire everyone has to feel that way all the time.
You might be wondering, feel what way?
We want to feel the love and the deep community surrounding us. We want to be able to walk or ride bikes to all of our best friends’ homes, and gather in sacred ritual, whether it’s a round of fire or dancing our butts off to our favorite music. I just know we all long, so much, to be together more.
Whether we own homes in different places around the world, or whether there’s some kind of fluid hospitality where we can drop into different locations that are serving the best organic food, growing it through regenerative agriculture at scale, caring deeply about where the water comes from and where it goes when it leaves our systems, and most importantly, how we’re impacting the local communities around us.

This piece is so important to me, and I want to give so much credit to my partner, Andrea Belen, who has been listening so deeply and paying so much attention to this part of the puzzle. There are so many real estate projects around the world, and this piece is often overlooked. Not because people don’t have good intentions, but because it’s hard to do, and somehow it gets left out.
