Beyond the fog, the rock and moss, and through trees as tall as giants you’ll find the mountains of Dör. Its peaks welcome ledges and its insides twisted caverns that wind within its walls down into the belly of the earth. Pockets of light illuminate corridors, the smell of wet stone fills the air, and a gentle hum can be heard. They sing for you.

And once your sun has come to set, the Voreya will appear to carry your soul away. Through fog, the rock and moss, the trees like giants, up mountain ledges, through shadowed grottos, and down into the belly of the underworld.

And the Voreya will be taking flight to @seasideodditiesexpo this weekend! Come make a puppet friend. 🐦‍⬛

[l can’t utter enough endearing syllables when it comes to this movie. Crafting this tiny puppet in pure admiration for the film is my clay and wire love letter to it. Again, if you haven’t seen The Vourdalak, I highly recommend you do.🖤]

Little wisps of ghosts on the horizon and tiny faces that shriek at the hint of a sunrise. Stay close to the shadow and trample out when the moon is on the rise.

Happy World Puppetry Day! ❤️

A trio of Walking Lanterns.

They are friend not foe, and always ready to illuminate dark paths to guide lost and weary travelers through winding stone walls and beyond hidden traps, back to the sunlight once more.

It’s sort of insane how many things a person can collect over the course of a year. Especially if you’re an artist who hoards every bit and bob that crosses your path, thinking that at some point you’ll use every accumulated trinket. And it’s always hidden under the guise of, you won’t just use them, you NEED them. Bottle caps? “Toss em on in!” Tattered scraps of hand-dyed cloth? “I’ll use ‘em at some point. Keep em.” Oddly shaped plastic containers simulating the ribs of a giant? “Oh, I’ll need ‘em at some point. Let’s save those too!” Soon you start to feel like a little trash goblin, adding to the mountain of treasures you carry on your back. “Shiney and new? The perfect distraction! We need it, toss those in!” What a dashing trash goblin I have become.

However, last weekend I spent four days building shelving units(much needed for the storage aspect of the garage), reorganizing piles of supplies, and letting go of things I know I won’t ever use(or trying to anyway). It was a whirlwind of “Oh shit, what did you start?” and “If you’re going through hell, keep going”. Because honestly, there was no turning back once I opened that first crate. And even though my back still aches, my thighs are still sore, and I never wanna build another IKEA stamped product again, it was all worth it.

I thought I’d share the new studio here. If you’ve ever wondered what my space looks like where I make every creature and write every story, then tadaaaa. Not exactly a Baroque haunt, that’s saved for my room. Think more along the lines of Bladerunner meets Shadowrun. It’s a work in progress that’s for sure. I still need more art, new mood lights taped to the back of the desk and screen, and better lamps because damn my eyesight is shitty and I am getting old. BUT. Dammit, I think it’s coming along. Not too shabby for a tiny studio space considering it’s sitting in the corner of a garage that’s also used for storage, a gym, and a parking space.

So. My question for you is, are you too a horrible, trash goblin fiend? And. If so. Did we just become best friends?! by @puppetswithteeth

I come bearing gifts. Or. A gift. That Pale Man stopmotion puppet, the one that has been hibernating in a crate in my garage for the last 5 years, finally has arms! I just wanted to share a little update with y’all. I’ll be working on his lower half this week. He’ll be a bit bigger than I had envisioned, but the awkwardness of something unsettling standing at the corner of my desk watching me work will be quite fitting for spooky season.

Also, share your favorite scene with meeeee.

The Return

He fell at her feet, a sword in his belly and a smear of sanguine on his teeth. Death came to collect and claim him as his own, but he promised he’d return one day.

And so, she waited, silent and patient, beneath a canopy of branches and leaves. Moon beams caressed her face at night, and the sun’s warmth cupped it by day. Leaves fell and perished, feeding creatures that burrowed, flew, and hunted. Snow fluttered on harsh winds, piled, and then melted. And the longest days on the horizon were her constant, but there she remained.

Moss had claimed stone and vines consumed rotted wood, but when the day finally came, she knew to rise. All six legs creaked and cracked, moaning from years of desolation. A fire stirred within a dusted hearth, humming a soft light that could be seen from soiled windowpanes. He had kept his promise.

Climbing down the rocky ledge, she went to greet him. His footsteps brought with them bliss, his song unearthing archived memories, and his gentle hand reminded her why she never abandoned them.

I’ll be taking a very small break from vending and commissions, which means I get to work on selfish projects that I have put on the back burner. This includes a nightmarish Pale Man from a certain Labyrinth movie that has been sitting unfinished in crate for over 5 years. Also, a much larger puppet that I’m a bit clueless on how to make, but the figuring it out like a giant puzzle is half the fun. And of course, I owe my sister a moon and sun for her room. So a little out of the puppet norm but I do really enjoy making props as well.

However. For today. For now, the first is a pair of puppets from one of my favorite animated films created by Mamoru Oshii and Yoshitaka Amano. I’ve been obsessed with Angel’s Egg since I first fell in love with Japanese animation. [And do NOT get me started on Vampire Hunter D. 😮‍💨 I still need to make a D Puppet. One day!] If you haven’t gandered the film, I highly recommend. And then we can nerd out together over the heavy symbolism stitched in every scene.

Her limbs and joints are hand sculpted, her iconic striped dress is hand painted and hand sewn. I wanted to make sure I put enough love and respect into making this puppet as I could possibly muster. Now to sit and assemble her before I share. I love her so much and I hope you will too. 🤍🪽🥚
