Welcoming Sadrie Alves, Kate Ruck & Gohar Martirosyan

We are delighted to welcome Sadrie Alves, Kate Ruck, and Gohar Martirosyan for a short track residency at Nesse in September. Under the programme line Learning from the Stream, the three artists will develop their collaborative project Provisional Grounds, supported by Culture Moves Europe.

Taking the Dutch polder, and the landscape of Zeeland specifically, as engineered land shaped by centuries of human effort, the artists explore questions of inaccessible geographies, reconstructed memory, and acts of maintenance. Their own migratory bodies carry the shifting presence and absence of landscapes, echoed in their friendship, nourished across time and distance. Here, they approach the land as a provisional ground for making.

Sadrie Alves (Antwerp, BE) works across visual arts and performance, including paper, video, textiles, and sculpture, through a site-responsive, autofictional practice touching on ecological transformation and obscured histories. She was recently in residence at Jester (BE) and Residency Unlimited (US), and was a POMONA Art Fund laureate in 2024.

✨🌛 Debut Exhibition at Galleria Kuu-si 🌛✨

We are excited to present Kate Ruck @pure_moods ‘s work in our debut exhibition—Kuu ja kuusi penniä (The Moon and Sixpence).

✨✨✨
Kate Ruck (USA/Finland) lives and works in Helsinki, Finland, with close ties to Las Vegas, New Mexico. After over a decade working in artists’ studios in New York and New Mexico as a studio and project manager, fabricating large-scale sculptural and land-based works, she now focuses on her own practice, which takes shape through site-responsive installations grounded in the material conditions of a place. Through these projects, she considers how traditions and shared histories persist through fragmentation and change, and how forms of making can honor what they inherit rather than claim possession over it. Many projects begin with collaborations and what already exists within a site, often unfolding outside conventional gallery spaces.

Kuu ja kuusi penniä, is loosely shaped around The Moon and the Sixpence — not as a literary reference, but as a shared condition: following an inner pull that may appear irrational, impractical, or illegible from the outside— and from notions of illegibility: positions, gestures, or practices that resist being immediately read or placed.

We invite you to celebrate the launch of our debut exhibition and discover the works of our talented participating artists.

some pages from the editorial design of the artist contribution 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬 by Kate Ruck @pure_moods for 𝓕𝓵𝓾𝓲𝓭 𝓜𝓪𝓽𝓮𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓵𝓲𝓽𝓲𝓮𝓼

The typeset and design I developed resonates with Kate‘s thought of these images and their corresponding texts as relational cues.
They move alongside the main body of the work and reflect the ways certain gestures, forms, or materials persist and resurface over time.

✨Meet the Artists✨

Kate Ruck, based between Helsinki, Finland and Las Vegas, New Mexico, works with sculpture and installation. Drawing from mass cultural experiences, collective memory, and natural phenomena, her practice explores animistic perspectives through digital-to-physical translations. Without seeking definitive answers, her works act as material witnesses, reviving an innate openness toward the world. By establishing a “spirit line” for information, she aims to allow energy, or essence, to flow and reconfigure—reconnecting us to primal forms of perception. Ruck has exhibited internationally throughout Europe and the US, and is a former artist-in-residence at Rule Gallery in Marfa, Texas.

We are so delighted to welcome her soon!

The artists-in-residency program Fluid Materialities is funded by the EU and Goethe Institute.

We learn the names of those we never knew
2024 – ongoing;
Gathering of bronze bas relief sculptures, graphite, vinyl text

We learn the names of those we never knew is a site-specific installation exploring indigenous knowledge, relationship to land and technology through the lens of agriculture. Conceived as a way of remembering, the installation's bronze sculptures are arranged in a configuration reminiscent of traditional companion planting formations native to Central and North America.

Reflecting on oral traditions, the sculptures serve as tangible manifestations of narratives recounting the historical agricultural technique known as The Three Sisters. Utilizing oil sand casting and delineated with graphite, each bronze relief symbolizes the dual process of reclaiming materials and narratives, embodying a collective endeavor to preserve and celebrate indigenous knowledge systems.

By invoking the metaphor of harvest, the installation’s gestures underscore the collaborative nature of knowledge production, wherein each sculpture’s presence comes into being as a testament to the cumulative hands, energies, and collective traces of many.
