Your lead vocal is probably too bright. 🎤

Austin Seltzer (F5ve ft. Kesha, Hudson Mohawke) darkens the lead vocal in the chorus on purpose:

🎚️ High cut on the lead vocal: 13k, then down to ~10k
✨ The brightness lives in the background vocals, wide on the sides
🎯 Result: the lead is more focused and way more intelligible

“Look at all of these big pop songs. The lead vocal is not that bright. The backgrounds are bright.”

💾 Save this for your next vocal mix.
📩 Send it to someone who boosts 12k on every vocal.

Stop filtering the low end out of your vocals. 🎤

Andrew Dawson (Childish Gambino, Kanye West) keeps the lows on Donald’s vocal on “Sober”. He just controls them:
🎚️ Multiband compressor (McDSP ML4) on the vocal group
📉 Compressing only ~80–700 Hz, the low mids
✨ Top end untouched, so the vocal stays full AND still sparkles

“I hate filtering out all the lows of vocals. I know it’s kind of a popular thing to do… You just got to control it.”

💾 Save this for your next vocal mix.
📩 Send it to someone who high-passes everything.

Do you cut the lows on vocals or keep them? 👇

He mixed “W.A.P.” in his truck. 🚙🎧

It was the first record Leslie Brathwaite mixed in quarantine. His two daughters, 14 and 11, were at home, and this was a song he definitely didn’t want them hearing on repeat.

So he set up his Focal monitors in his Cadillac Escalade, sat in the third row with his laptop and mixed one of the biggest songs of 2020.

Cardi approved it. Meg approved it. No changes. ✅

👇 Where’s the weirdest place you’ve ever mixed?
📩 Send this to someone who says they need a “real studio”.

How Coldplay named Michael Brauer’s secret technique 🎚️

Michael Brauer mixed Coldplay’s first record. Not the second. And it didn’t look like he’d get the third.
Then Guy Berryman called. The band had finished the album, and it just didn’t feel exciting enough.

« Guy, what do you think we should do? »
« We need to Brauerize this! » 🔥

That record became X&Y. And the name stuck.

📌 Save this. The full Brauerize method is next-level.

Andrew Scheps’ secret parallel vocal chain 🎤

Pultec → LA-2A → Pultec. In parallel.

1️⃣ Pultec: cut the lows, boost « a metric crap tonne » of 8k
2️⃣ LA-2A: peak reduction cranked
3️⃣ Pultec: bring back the 100 Hz, so it sounds « less horrendous »

Blended in parallel, it keeps the vocal floating on top of guitars, pianos and synths without changing the performance.

📌 Save this for your next vocal mix
📤 Send it to the friend who always buries their vocals
💬 Comment « CHAIN » if you’re trying it tonight

He called Sony every week for a year. Now he mixes Billie Eilish. 🎧

Rob Kinelski knocked on every studio door in New York. Most never opened.

So he kept calling. Every week. For almost a year.

His first job: the night shift, midnight to 8 a.m., in a basement next to the boiler room. Then came Beyoncé’s B’Day. Then Billie Eilish.

Your bedroom can make gold records 🏠💿

BigXthaPlug’s “Therapy Session” wasn’t recorded in a studio. It was cut in a living room, full of room noise.

Bainz went in “like a doctor with a scalpel” to clean it up. Listen to the before/after 👀

This is why your ad-libs are killing your lead vocal 🎤

Teezio, 2x Grammy-winning engineer for Chris Brown, crushes the ad-libs on “Residuals” with what looks like an insane amount of reduction.

It looks crazy. But there’s a purpose: if the ad-libs grab your ear, you miss the next lyric. The lead always comes first.

Do you tame your ad-libs or let them ride? 👇

« This vocal isn’t the cleanest. That’s the point. » 🔥

Ben Thomas on mixing Lil Uzi Vert’s « Rehab »: raw, dirty, a little distortion. That’s the character.
He learned from Puremix videos. Now he’s teaching on them.
