Why study Structural Biology?

With so many undiscovered secrets and riches for humanity to discover, the study of structural biology is akin to an adventurous expedition within the human body.

1. Understanding atomic structures helps us better understand various biological processes, such as muscle contraction and oxygen transport in the blood.

2. We can create numerous compounds that can control various functions in pathogenic bacteria and humans thanks to structure-guided medication design.

3. Techniques for obtaining atomic structures are constantly evolving, allowing them to more precisely collect structural data in numerous unexplored areas of the cell.

4. We developed new machine-learning methods for statistically forecasting protein structures by testing the concepts that give rise to various atomic structures.

5. While much of the best structural work has been done in solving static atomic structures, a critical area of interest for modern structural biologists is catching biomolecules in action - we want to record biochemistry occurring at an atomic level.
