Neal racked up 10 tackles and 2 interceptions in a 13-3 victory for the Vaqueros.

My week 7 Southland Conference power rankings (based on just my opinion). Big moves this week in the FCS. SFA got moved up to the 3 spot in both of the biggest polls during the bye. Lamar had a good win against UIW and prevented them from coming back at the end of the game. I was going to move Incarnate Word up one spot even if Southeastern Louisiana had won just because they’ve had the two hardest conference games of the season back to back, playing two top 10 teams in the nation and came within 3 points in both of those games. I think they’ll finish the season third in conference. HCU moved up as a result of SELA losing, and UTRGV moved up to the 5 spot. I said last week that I thought they just had a bad game against East Texas A&M. ETAM had their homecoming and pulled off the upset, but I put UTRGV right back at the 5 spot where they were two weeks ago. When they’re at home it feels like they could be ranked but when they’re away they perform much worse. We’ll see how they do against UIW this week. SELA is at 6 right below the Vaqueros and Nicholls and ETAM both moved down a spot. McNeese stayed at 9 and of course Northwestern State stayed at 10. The Demons play the Cowboys in this week’s Toilet Bowl… I think McNeese has that one easily. SELA plays Lamar so if they want to bounce back from their loss against UTRGV they’ll have to pull off a huge upset. The Lumberjacks play the Colonels this week which should not be too much of a challenge, and ETAM goes to HCU to see if they can get an upset.

Tomorrow isn’t just another game at The Vack.

One of my goals with Straw Hat Vaqueros is simple: level up the game-day experience. If we’re spending our time and money supporting our university, we might as well make every damn minute count by cheering our athletes, getting in our opponents’ heads, and making the stands part of the game.

SLU said they’re coming for our perfect home record

Tomorrow could mean our first Top 25 FCS win, our first win over SLU, and the loudest crowd in program history.

It could also mean our first home loss.

Of all those possible FIRSTS, I sure as hell don’t want that last one.

I’ll be in Section 118, from the first “SADDLE UP!” at kickoff to throwing up the V for the Alma Mater.

It’s time to saddle the hell up!

My week 6 power rankings (based on nothing but my opinion). The biggest move this week is UTRGV. They lost to East Texas A&M during the Lions’ homecoming week. I do think the Vaqueros are a better team, but for now I have to tank ETAM higher. ETAM has been tough at home, at least for SFA over the years. We had a close game with them last year where Vidlak threw 3 interceptions, although that was particularly due to weather as well. And then we lost to them in 2024. For homecoming they wanted an upset and they got it. Nicholls has been struggling but I can’t justify putting them lower than UTRGV right now after the Colonels won their matchup. I ranked UTRGV high after their win against McNeese, but now that McNeese’s season is collapsing and their starting quarterback is out (which happened in their game against UTRGV), it’s looking like less of a quality win. Incarnate Word had a very good showing against SFA, but it was rough on SFA’s side for most of the game. I won’t move Southeastern Louisiana down after their bye week, but UIW’s matchup with Lamar this week will be fun to watch. It must’ve been fun to get ranked in a bye week for SLU, they moved up to the 25 spot in the AFCA poll. Also, my prediction for Northwestern State losing on their bye week is not a mistake, they will find a way to lose. HCU had a dominant win over Nicholls so they’ll move up above UTRGV for the 5 spot.

Not much change in this week’s power rankings (based on nothing but my opinion.) SFA had a dominant win over a solid (and extremely confident) division II team- Northeastern State. That keeps us on top and Lamar right below with a huge win over Nicholls. This solidifies them in the number 2 spot after a lot of people doubted how good they actually are. Southeastern also killed their opponent but that makes sense because their opponent the Northwestern State Demons are permanently at the bottom, of these power rankings and of the FCS. Incarnate Word had a loss to Texas State but that doesn’t mean much. UTRGV will stay where they are after the bye week, and the Houston Christian Huskies and Nicholls will both move up one spot. Last week when I released my power rankings I did not know that McNeese’s starting quarterback Devin Lippold went out with a season-ending shoulder injury, but that derails their season and it showed against East Texas A&M who they beat by just 3 points. Some interesting matchups this week will be SFA v UIW to see if the Lumberjacks can keep up their domination, HCU v Nicholls to see who gets that 6th spot, and UTRGV v ETAM. I don’t think anyone is doubting the Vaqueros will take that one. Also if you’re into shock-content make sure to tune into LSU disassembling McNeese, that one is going to be rough. @thereallanekiffin will have his way with the Cowboys. Geaux Tigers. 🐅

UTRGV LB Jaiden Haygood (@j23den) played really well against McNeese last week.

Haygood tallied 13 tackles, including 2 for loss, and came away with an interception.

UTRGV WR Kyran Lee (@onlykyran) is slowly building momentum in what could be a big year for the Humble, Texas native.

Lee had 8 grabs for 125 yards and a TD against Nicholls last week.

Keep an eye on Lee this week against McNeese.
