💚 A LITTLE SCARE FOR OUR LITTLE SOYA! 💚

If you’ve visited Put a Plant On It, you probably know Soya, our resident Green-Cheeked Conure! She’s a fan favorite, has MANY boyfriends, and has stolen countless hearts.

But Soya’s journey hasn’t always been easy!

She was surrendered because of aggression in her previous home. When she first arrived, she would attack people and other birds several times a DAY! It took A LOT of patience and hard work to help her become the sweet girl we know today.

We’ve gone from several fights a day to roughly ONE every other month. HUGE progress! She still occasionally decides she has beef with another bird and flies across the room to start something.

Last week, she picked a fight with Herbie, our approximately 80-year-old Orange-Winged Amazon. The SMALLEST bird taking on the BIGGEST, crankiest old man! Unfortunately, this time, Soya gave us quite a scare.

Johanna’s wildlife rehabilitation background helped her stabilize Soya before rushing her to our amazing avian vet, Specialized Care for Avian and Exotics.

After time in the incubator, X-rays, and testing, we got GOOD NEWS: NO BROKEN BONES! Her skin is intact, and she appears healthy overall. She’s a little sore and isn’t quite using her right foot and wing normally, so we suspect she may have strained herself. She’s still recovering and being closely monitored.

For now, Soya is resting in a hospital enclosure, which means she’s temporarily unavailable to see her adoring fans. 💚

Unfortunately, her little tiff came with a hefty vet bill. Thanks to YOUR donations over the past few months, we were able to cover her emergency care. We are SO grateful!

We’d love to replenish our veterinary fund so we can continue helping birds who need medical care and a second chance.

🦜💚 MEET OBI! A TALKATIVE GENTLEMAN LOOKING FOR HIS FOREVER HOME! 💚🦜

Say hello to Obi, our 20-year-old Timneh African Grey who is AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!

Fun fact: Did you know there are two types of African Greys? Timnehs were recently reclassified as their own species! But like snake plants becoming Dracaena, we suspect they'll always be African Greys in our hearts. 😂🌿

Obi spent his entire life in one loving home, and now he's looking for his next forever family. He has a history of mild feather plucking, but thankfully, he hasn't plucked at all with us! With a nutritious diet, plenty of toys, social interaction, and adequate out-of-cage time, we're hopeful he'll continue thriving.

🗣️ THIS BOY CAN TALK! African Greys are famous for their incredible talking abilities, and Obi is no exception! We're still cataloging his vocabulary, but so far we've heard "Hi," "Peanut," "Get a grip," "Alexa," and SO much more! He also has the most adorable collection of whistles.

Obi loves attention and social interaction, but he's not big on fingers near him (a pretty typical Grey trait!). He'll happily step up onto a perch and may give kisses once he feels comfortable with you. He's eating pellets like a horse and LOVES his fresh chop!

💚 IS OBI YOUR MATCH?
🦜 Best suited to a home without small children due to his sensitivity around fingers.
🦜 Very quiet when given adequate out-of-cage time.
🦜 Generally easygoing and has shown no interest in our other birds.
🦜 Can thrive as a solo bird or in a home with other birds.

INDIGENOUS PEOPLES' DAY | HONOR THE LAND. RESPECT SOVEREIGNTY. SUPPORT INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES.

Today, on Indigenous Peoples' Day, we acknowledge that Put a Plant On It stands on the ancestral lands of the Seneca Nation, the Keepers of the Western Door of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy.

But acknowledgment without action is just words.

Indigenous Peoples' Day is not simply a day to celebrate Native cultures and traditions. It is a day to recognize the resilience of Indigenous peoples, confront the ongoing consequences of colonization, and acknowledge that the displacement, erasure, and injustices faced by Native communities are not just chapters in a history book. They continue today.

Indigenous peoples are not a thing of the past. They are here. Their cultures are alive. Their voices matter. Their sovereignty is not up for debate. At Put a Plant On It, we believe that honoring the land also means honoring the people who have stewarded it for generations.

We carry sage sourced directly from Seneca community members, and we do not profit from its sale. 100% of the proceeds go to NETO, a Native arts and cultural nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Native arts, education, cultural programming, and community initiatives.

We are also proud to carry beautiful, handmade creations by @creationsbylaticia, including cards, balms, and dreamcatchers. Supporting Indigenous communities means more than posting a land acknowledgment once a year. 🌿💚 HAPPY WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY! 💚🌿

Did you know that while houseplants don't actually clean the air in our homes in any meaningful way, the positive impact they can have on our mental health is no myth?

Caring for plants can give us a sense of purpose, create routines, encourage mindfulness, and offer a little moment of peace in an otherwise chaotic world. Watching a new leaf unfurl, getting our hands in the soil, or simply sitting in a room surrounded by greenery can help us slow down and reconnect with ourselves.

For some of us, plants are a hobby. For others, they're a creative outlet, a grounding ritual, a reason to get out of bed, or a reminder that growth takes time and doesn't happen overnight.

And sometimes, nurturing something else helps us remember to nurture ourselves, too.

At Put a Plant On It, we believe plants are about so much more than just plants. They're about community, connection, and creating little pockets of joy in our everyday lives.

🍄 ARE THOSE EGGS IN MY HOUSEPLANT SOIL?! 👀

Reposting one of our favorites from 2022 because this question comes up ALL. THE. TIME. 😂

Mold and fungus growing in your houseplant soil is usually nothing to panic about. In many cases, it’s simply a sign that you have an active, healthy soil ecosystem doing its thing.

But the one that really throws people for a loop is this weird yellow stuff that looks suspiciously like tiny eggs.

It's Leucocoprinus birnbaumii, commonly known as the yellow houseplant mushroom, and it's harmless to your plants. What you're usually seeing is the mycelium (the fungal network living in the soil). If you're lucky, it'll eventually fruit and you'll get an adorable little yellow mushroom popping up in your pot. 🍄💛

So before you scoop out your soil in a panic: fungus does not automatically mean something is wrong with your plant!

🤍 LOUIE UPDATE! Still here, still healing, still racking up vet bills. 🤍

Believe it or not, Louie had YET ANOTHER vet appointment! At this point, we've honestly lost count of how many he's had. This handsome Umbrella Cockatoo has been with our bird rescue since July, and it's been quite a journey.

When Louie was surrendered to us, we were told he was very shy and reserved and didn't particularly enjoy interaction or handling. We soon discovered there was a pretty good reason for that. Shortly after arriving, our avian veterinarian diagnosed him with a severe upper respiratory infection. It's hard to feel like yourself when you're that sick!

After several rounds of antibiotics, we're happy to report that his respiratory infection has cleared. Unfortunately, he developed a secondary fungal infection, so he's now on medication for that as well.

But here's the really exciting part: the better Louie feels, the more his personality is starting to shine! He's coming out of his shell, becoming more comfortable, and showing us more of the sweet, fun bird we've been hoping to see.

It's been a long road for this handsome guy, but 100% worth it. He's currently holding several rescue records:

🤍 Most vet visits
🤍 Almost longest resident
🤍 Definitely longest resident before becoming available for adoption
🤍 Most medication
🤍 And, of course, one of the sweetest guys around.

We're still focused on getting Louie healthy and comfortable, so he is not yet available for adoption. We'll continue sharing updates as he makes progress.
